Front pa ssenger' s exterio r mirror tilt
function*
To help you see the curb when back ing into a
pa rking space, the surface of the mirror tilts
slightly . Fo r th is to happen, the knob m ust be in
the posit io n for the front passenger's exterior
mirror.
You can adjust the t ilted m irror surface by turn­
ing the knob in the desi red direction. When you
move ou t of reverse and into another gear, the
new mirror position is stored and assigned to the
key you are using.
The mir ror goes back into its orig inal position
once yo u drive forward faster than 9 mph
(15 km/h) or turn the ignition off .
A WARNING
Curved mirror surfaces (for examp le convex)
enlarge the f ield of vision . However, they
make objects in the mirror appear sma ller
and farther away. Your may estimate incor­
rectly whe n you use these m irrors to gauge
your distance from the vehicles behind you
when changing lanes, wh ich increases the r is k
of an accident.
(D Note
- Applies to vehicles with power folding exte­
rior mirrors: if the mirror housing was
moved by outside forces (such as an impact
whe n maneuvering), yo u m ust use the pow­
e r folding func tion to fo ld the mi rror all the
way o ut. The mirro rs will make a loud no ise
when they latch into place . The mir ror hous ­
ing must not be moved back into place by

hand because this would impai r the func ­
tion of the mirror mechanism.
- Applies to vehicles without power folding

wash, you must fold the exter ior mirrors in
to reduce the r isk of damage to the m irrors.

- If the power adjusting function malfunc­
tions, the glass in both mirrors can be ad­
justed by p ressing on the edge of it by hand .

Dimming the mirrors
Your vehicle is equipped with a manual or auto­
matic* dimming rearview mirror .

.. Pull the lever on the bottom of the m irror back.

If the g lass on an a utomatic dimming m irro r
b reaks, electro lyte can leak out. This liquid
can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory sys­
tem. If there is contact w ith the fluid, flush
immediately w ith p lenty of water. Consult a
physic ian if necessa ry .
- Repeated or long-term exposure to e lectro­
lyte fl uid can lead to ir ritation of the air­
ways, especia lly in peopl e with ast hma o r
o ther respiratory condi tions. Take deep
b rea ths immedi ately afte r leaving the vehi ­
cle or, if this is not poss ible, open all of the
doors and windows as wide as possib le .

(D -Rain sensor mode. The winds hield wipers
switch on once the vehicle speed exceeds app rox ­
imately 2 mph (4 km/h) and it is raining. The
h igher the sensitivity of the rain sensor that is set
(switch ® to the right), the earlier the wind·
shie ld wipers react to moisture on the wind­
shield . You ca n deactivate the rain sensor mode
in the Infota inment system, which switches the
intermittent mode on. To do th is, select :

by moving the lever to posit ion ® within 10 sec­
onds of the afterwipe . The afterwipe function is
reactivated the next time you switch the ignit ion
o n .
Clean the headlights*. The headlight washer sys­
tem* operates only when the low beam head­ lights are o n. If you move t he lever to posit io n
® · the headlights and the night v is io n assist
camera* are cleaned at inte rva ls .
® -Wipe t he rear window. The number of w ipes
depe nds on the windsh ield wiper movement .
The rear wiper automat ica lly switches on when
the reverse gear is selected and the front wind­
shield wipers are on and running.

depends on how long the lever is held in pos ition

A WARNING
-The rain sensor is on ly intended to ass ist the
d river. The drive r may still be responsib le
for manually switching the wipers on based on visibili ty cond itions .
- The winds hield may not be t reated w ith wa ­
ter- repelling w indshield coating agents. Un­
f a vorable co ndit io ns, su ch as wet ness, da rk­
ness o r low su n, can resu lt in increased
g la re, which increases the risk of an acci­
dent . Wiper blade chatter is also possib le.

Seats and storage
- To reduce the risk of an accident, only adjust
the driver's seat when the vehicle is station­
ary.
- E xercise caution when adjusting the seat
height. Unsupervised or careless seat ad­
justment can pinch fingers or hands, which
increases the risk of injury .
- The front seat backrests must not be re­
clined too far back when driving, because
this impairs the effectiveness of the safety
belts and airbag system, which increases
the risk of injury.

You can adjust the massage function, lumbar
support, side bolsters and upper thigh support

You can switch the cl imate control system on and
off using the OFF button. It also sw itches on
when yo u pre ss anothe r button or a knob. Airflow
from o utside is bloc ked when t he climate con trol

Press the knobs, buttons or rocker switches to
turn the functions on or off . When the funct ion is
switched on, the LED in the respect ive button or
knob t urns on. The rocker switches are touch­
sensitive. The driver a nd front passenger settings
can be adjusted separate ly.
You can adjust the settings for the rear of the ve­ h icle using the controls in the rear
~ fig. 83 .
OFF climate control s ystem
You can switch the climate control system on and
off using the OFF button . It also switches on
when you p ress anot he r button or a knob . The OFF button
in the rear only switches the A/C sys­
tem on/off in the rear of the vehicle . A irflow
from outside is b locked when the cl imate contro l
system is switched off.
A/C Cooling mode
Cooling mode is sw itched on and
off by pressing
the A/Con/off . The air is not cooled and humid ity
is not removed when cooli ng mode is sw itched
off . This can cause fog on the w indows . Cooling
mode switches off a utomat ically when the out-
s ide temperatu re is below ze ro.

Driving
General information
Breaking in
A new vehicle must be broken in for the first
1,000 mi les (1,500 km). Do not dr ive at speeds
that will exceed 2/3 of the maximum permitted
engine speed (RPM) for the first 600 miles
(1,000 km), and avoid full acceleration during
this period . You may gradually start increasing
the RPM and the speed between 600 miles
(1,000 km) and 1,000 miles (1,500 km) .
During the first hours of use, the engine has a
higher internal friction than later on when all
moving parts have settled into p lace with each
other.
How the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000
miles (1,500 km) also affects the engine quality.
Drive at moderate engine speeds after the initia l
break-in period, particularly when running a cold
engine . This will reduce eng ine wear and improve
the m ileage .
Do not drive at too low of an engine speed (RPM) .
Shift down if the engine stops running "smooth­ ly". Extremely high eng ine speeds are automati­
cally reduced.
Reducing the risk of vehicle damage
([) Note
When driving on poor roads, by curbs and on
steep ramps , make su re that low-hang ing
components such as the spoiler and exhaust
system do not come into contact with these
or they could be damaged. This especially ap­
plies to vehicles with low ground clearance
and vehicles that are heavily loaded.
Driving through water on roads
Note the following to reduce the risk of vehicle
damage when driv ing through water, for example
on flooded roads :
- The water must not be any higher than the bot­
tom of the vehicle body.
D riving
- Do not drive faster than walking speed.
A WARNING
After driv ing through water or mud, the effec­
tiveness of the brakes may be reduced due to moisture on the brake rotors and brake pads.
A few careful brake applications should dry
off the brakes and restore the full braking ef­
fect .
(D Note
- Vehicle components such as the engine,
transmission, suspens ion or electrical sys-
tem can be severely damaged by driving
through water.
- Always switch the Start/Stop system" off
when driving through water¢
page 84.

-Determine the depth before driving through
water.
- Do not stop the vehicle, drive in reverse or
switch the engine off when driving through
water.
- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may
create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your vehicle to drive
through safely.
- Avoid driv ing through salt water, because
this can cause corrosion.
Economical and environmentally-friendly
driving
T he amount o f fuel consumpt ion, the environ­
mental impact and the wear to the engine,
brakes and tires depends mostly on your driving
style. With an ant icipatory and economic driving
style, fuel consumption can be reduced by ap­ proximately 10-15%. The following tips will help
you conserve the environment and your money at the same time.
Anticipatory driving
A vehicle uses the most fuel when accelerating.
When you drive with anticipation, you do not
need to brake as often and so you accelerate less.
When possible, let your vehicle coast with a gear ..,.

engaged, for examp le when you notice that the
next traffic light is red . This produces an engine
braking effect, wh ich helps to protect the brakes
and tires and reduces the emissions and fuel con­
sumpt ion to zero (fuel shut-off during decelera­
tion) .
Shift efficientl y
Upshifting earlier is an effective way to save fuel.
Staying in a gear too long uses fue l unnecessari­
ly .
Press down on the acce lerator peda l slowly and
avoid "k ick -down".
Avoid full acceleration
You sho uld rarely t ravel a t the maximum vehicle
speed. High speeds cause a disp ropor tionately
h igh increase in fuel consumption, emissions and
traffic noise . Driving more slowly saves fue l.
Reduce idling time
The Start/Stop system* helps to reduce the id ling
time automatically. In vehicles wi tho ut the Start/
Stop system*, it is efficient to switch the engine
off when stopped at rai lroad crossings and long
red lights . Stopping the engine for 30 -40 sec ­
onds already saves more fuel than the amount of
extra fuel needed to restart the eng ine.
I t takes a very long time in idle to wa rm the en ­
gine up to operating temperature . Wear and
emissions are especially high in the wa rm -up
phase. Therefore, yo u should begin driving im­
mediately after starting the engine. Avoid high
RPMs while do ing th is .
Have ma intenance performed regularly
By having maintenance performed regu larly on
your veh icle, you can help to reduce f uel con­
sumpt ion before yo u even start to dr ive. The
maintenance condition of your vehicle not only
affects traffic safety and long -term value but a l­
so impacts f uel consumption . A poorly main­
tained engine can lead to f uel consumpt ion that
is 10% higher tha n normal.

Avoid short trips
The eng ine and exh aust clean ing syste m mus t
r each their op tima l operating temperatu re to ef­
fectively reduce consumption and emissions.
A cold engine uses a d isp roportion ately high
amoun t of fue l. The e ngine re aches opera ting
temperat ure and cons umption norma lizes on ly
after approximate ly 2.S mi les ( 4 km).
Check the tire pressure
To save fue l, ma ke sure the t ires are always in­
flated to the corre ct press ure
~ page 343. The
f uel consumpt ion c an increase by S% if the p res­
s ur e is only 0 .S bar too low. Due to the inc reased
rol ling resistance, low tire pressures w ill also
l ead to greater tire wear and will affect driving
behavior.
Do not drive on winter tires year -round, as this
will consume up to 10% more f ue l.
Eliminate unnecessary weight
Since eve ry po und of ext ra weight increases f uel
consump tion, a quick inspect io n of the luggage
compartment may be wo rth it to avoid unneces ­
sary weight .
When not be ing used, a roof ra ck sho uld be re­
moved to decrease the w ind resis tance of the ve­
hicle . This will save yo u approx ima tely 12% fue l
at speeds from 62 -7S mph (100 -120 km/h) .
Save energy
The engine d rives the generator, which generates
electri city; the f uel consumpt ion also increases
with t he deman d for e lec tricity . T he refore, sw itch
electrica l eq uipment o ff when you no longe r
need it . Examples of eq uipment that uses a lot of
energy are air blowers at a high setting, the rear
window defogger and seat heating* .
CJ) Note
Do not leave engine idling unattended after
starting. If warning lights s hould come on to
i ndicate imprope r operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also prod uces
h eat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle or othe r proper­
ty .
