A WARNING
Do not assume the roads are free of ice based
on the outside temperature display . Be aware
that there may be ice on roads even when the
outside temperature is around 41 °F (+5 °C)
and that ice can increase the risk of accidents .
(D Tips
- Depending on vehicle equipment, the in­
strument illumination (needles and gauges) may turn on when the lights are
off and the
ignition is switched on . The illumination for
the gauges reduces automatically and even­
tually turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the low beams on at the appropriate
time.
- You can select the units used for tempera­
ture, speed and other measurements in the
Infotainment system¢
page 245.
-If your vehicle is stationary or if you are driv­
ing at very low speeds, the temperature dis­
played may be slightly higher than the ac­
tual temperature outside due to the heat ra­
diating from the engine.
- At temperatures below 41 °F (+5 °C), a
snowflake symbol appears in front of the
temperature display¢,&. .
Coolant temperature indicator
The coolant temperature display@¢ page 10,
fig . 3
or ¢ page 10, fig . 4 only functions when
the ignition is switched on. To prevent engine
damage, please observe the following notes
about the temperature ranges.
Cold range
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­ perature yet . Avoid high engine speeds, full ac­
celeration and heavy engine loads.
Cockpit overview
Normal range
The engine has reached its operating tempera­
ture once the LEDs up to the center of the gauge
turn on. If the. indicator light in the instru­
ment cluster display turns on, the coolant tem­
perature is too high ¢
page 22.
@ Note
-Auxiliary headlights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating during
high outside temperatures and heavy en­
gine load .
- The front spoiler also helps to distribute
cooling air correctly while driving. If the
spoiler is damaged, the cooling effect will
be impaired and the risk of the engine over­
heating will increase. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­
cility for assistance.
{D Tips
Applies to: vehicles with diesel engines
Due to the high efficiency of these engines,
the engine may not always reach operating
temperature in cold outside temperatures.
This is normal and not a cause for concern.
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev­
olutions per minute (RPM).
The beginning of the red zone in the tachometer
indicates the maximum permissible engine speed
for all gears once the engine has been broken in.
Before reaching this zone, you should shift into
the next highest gear, select the "D/S" selector
lever position, or remove your foot from the ac ­
celerator pedal.

The high beam assistant automatically turns the
high beams on or off depending on the surround­
ing conditions .
A camera on the rearv iew mirror mou nt can de­
tect light sources from other road users . The high
beams switch on or off automatically depend ing
on the pos it ion of vehicles d riving ahead and on­
com ing vehicles , the veh icle speed and other en­
v ironmental and traffic cond it ions.
Activ ating high b eam ass istant
Requirement: the light sw itch must be set to the
AUTO pos it ion and the high beam ass istant must
be switched o n in the Infota inment system

High beam assis tan t is only i ntended to assist
th e drive r. The dr iver is still re sponsib le for
contro lling the headlights and may need to
switch them on and off manually depend ing
on light and visib ility conditions. It may be
necessary to ope rate them manua lly in s itua­
tions such as:
- In adverse weather cond itions such as fog,
heavy ra in, b low ing snow or sp raying water .
- On roads where oncoming traffic may be
partially obsc ured, such as expressways .
- W hen there are road users t hat do not have
s ufficient lighting, s uc h as bicyclers o r
vehicles with dirty ta il lamps.
- In tight cu rves and on steep hills .
- In poo rly lit areas .
- Wi th stro ng ref lec to rs , such as s igns.
- I f the area of t he windsh ield near the se nso r
is f ogg ed ove r, dir ty, i cy or covere d w ith a
sti cker.

dark and the ligh t sw itch is in the
AUTO position.
Daytime running lights

Move the windshield wiper lever to the corre­
sponding position:
@ -Windshield wipers off
(D-Rain sensor mode. The windshield wipers
switch on once the vehicle speed exceeds approx­
imately 2 mph (4 km/h) and it is raining. The
higher the sensitivity of the rain sensor that is set (switch ® to the right), the earlier the wind­
shield wipers react to moisture on the wind­
shield. You can deactivate the rain sensor mode
in the Infotainment system , which switches the
intermittent mode on. To do this, select:

button > Vehicle > left control button > Driver
assistance
> Rain sensor . In intermittent mode,
you can adjust the interval time using the switch
®·
@ -Slow wiping
®-Fast wiping
©-Single wipe. If you hold the lever in this posi­
tion longer, the wipers switch from slow wiping
to fast wiping .

®-Clean the w indshield. The wipers wipe one
time after several seconds of driving to remove
water droplets. You can switch this function off
by moving the lever to position ® within 10 sec­
onds of the afterwipe . The afterwipe function is
reactivated the next time you switch the ignition
on .
Clean the headlights*. The headlight washer sys­
tem* operates only when the low beam head­ lights are on . If you move the lever to position
@, the headlights and the night v is ion assist
camera* are cleaned at intervals.
®-Wipe the rear window. The number of wipes
depends on the windshield wiper movement .
The rear wiper automatically switches on when
the reverse gear is selected and the front wind­
shield wipers are on and running.
(f) -Clean the rear window . The number of wipes
depends on how long the lever is held in position
(f) .
A WARNING
-The rain sensor is only intended to assist the
driver . The driver may still be responsible
for manually switching the wipers on based on visibility conditions.
- The windsh ield may not be treated with wa­
ter-repelling windshield coating agents. Un­
favorable conditions, such as wetness, dark­
ness or low sun, can result in increased
glare, which increases the risk of an acci­
dent. Wiper blade chatter is also possible.
- Properly functioning windshield wiper
blades are required for a clear view and safe
driving

-If there is frost, make sure the windshield
wiper blades are not frozen to the wind­
shield. Switching on the windshield wipers
when the blades are frozen to the wind­
shield can damage the wiper blades.
- The windshield wiper system must be
switched off (lever in position 0) before us­
ing a car wash. This prevents the w ipers

remain avai lable during the "stop" phase . The en ­
gine will restart automatica lly when needed.
The Start/Stop system is automatically activated
as soon as the ignit ion is switched on .
Basic requirements
- The driver's door and hood must be closed .
- The "P", "N" or "D" selector lever posit ion must
be engaged .
- The steering wheel must not be sharp ly turned.
- The vehicle must have driven faster than 2 mph
(3 km/h) s ince the last time it stopped.
- A trailer must not be hitched to the vehicle .

Stopping/starting the engine

brake pedal until the veh icle has stopped . The

- The ign ition w ill tu rn off if you press the
I START ENGINE STOP! button dur ing a stop
phase.
- You can determ ine for yo urself if the engine
will stop or not by reducing or increasing

the amount of force you use to press the
brake pedal. For examp le, if yo u on ly lightly
press on the b rake peda l in stop -and -go
t raffic or when turning, the engine w ill not
switch off when the vehicle is stat ionary. As
soo n as yo u press the brake down harder,
the engine w ill switch off .
- Press the brake peda l during a Stop phase
to keep the vehicle from rolling .
Starting/stopping the engine automat­
ically

The sys tem chec ks if cer tain condit ions a re me t
before and d uring the "stop" p hase, and dete r­
mines if and how long the engine is stopped de ­
pending on the situation. For example, if power
u sage is high, the eng ine will not be stopped.
Along with other conditions, the following fac­
tors influence the automatic engine start or stop:
- Environmental conditions (slopes, inclines, ele-
vation, temperat ure)
- Battery (cha rge status, temperature, powe r us -
age)
- Engine temperature
- Assistance systems
- Dr iv ing behav ior
If the
rjj ind icator light appears in the instru­
ment cluster d isplay, the engi ne w ill not be stop­
ped .
Switching the ignition off automatically

If you leave the veh icle dur ing a "stop" phase, the
engine can be res tarted w ithin approximate ly 30
seconds if the doors are closed, the driver's safe­
ty be lt is fastened and the brake pedal is pressed.
If you leave the veh icle longer than 30 seconds,
t h e ign it io n will sw itch o ff automa tica lly to pre ­
vent the vehicle battery from draining. If t his is
the case, the message
Start /stop system: igni­
tion will be switched off in 30s

that are between approximately 32 feet (10 m)
and 295 feet (90 m) in front of the vehicle and
within the detection zone. Within the limits of
the system

If there are pedestrians or wild an imals in an
area in front of your vehicle that is classified as
critical, the system will direct your attention to
th is:
- Pedestrians or wild anima ls are highlighted in
red in the instrument cluster and the corre­
sponding symbol. or. turns on

-There is also an audible signal.
The area classified as critical is based on the veh i­
cle speed and the steeri ng wheel angle . Pedes­
trian and wi ld animal warning enco urages you to
pay more attention .
If the night vision assist image is rep laced by an­

Marking light*
To direct the driver's attention to a pedestrian,
the headlights can flash on the pedestrian three
times in a row when there is a pedestrian warn­ ing.
This occurs at speeds above approximately
35 mph (60 km/h) if you are outside of illuminat­
ed areas and no detected vehicles are shown. The

The marking light is not used for wild animals.

The following situations may affect the function
of the night vision assist system:
- Poor visibility such as snow, rain, fog or heavy spray
- Dirty lens on the night vision assist camera
Make sure the night vision camera <=>
fig. 124 is
not covered by stickers, deposits or any other ob­
structions because this can impair the night vi­
sion assist function . For information on cleaning,
see<=>
page 351 .
The pedestrian and wild animal recognition de­
pends on the temperature difference between
the person/wild animal and the background . Peo -
~ ple/wild animals may not be detected if the dif-,.....
~ ference is too small. The pedestrian/wild animal N
8 marking and the marking light* deactivate at 0 :E '<I'
Assistance systems

age is selected in the instrument cluster display,

A WARNING
-Pay attention to traffic and the area around
your vehicle when night vision assist is switch­
ed on. The driver is always responsible for as­
sessing the traffic situation.
- Night vision assist can only warn about peo­
ple and wild animals located within the visu­
al range of the infrared camera. The visual
range corresponds to the image in the in­
strument cluster display.
- Night vision assist may not detect people or
wild animals and mark them if
- they are not in an upright position, for ex­
ample if they are sitting or lying down
and/or
- the silhouette in the display appears in­
complete or interrupted, for example be­
cause the person is partially covered by a
parked vehicle or an animal is covered by
tall grass. This could increase the risk of
an accident.
- Never try to swerve around animals if doing
so will endanger you or other road users, be­
cause this increases the risk of an accident.
@ Tips
- Even though the system evaluates the
shape and heat given off by all detected ob­
jects, there are limits to the system . There
may be false warnings.
- For technical reasons, the image pauses in
split second intervals.
