Phase 1:
p rogramming the overhead keypad
1. Make sure your vehicle is wit hin operating
range of the remote contro lled garage
door opener .
2. Set the parking brake

gine!
4. Press and hold the two outs ide Home­
Link ® buttons
(D and @for approxi­
mately 20 seconds until indicator light@

both buttons. Do not ho ld the buttons for
longer than 30 seconds .
.,. This procedure only needs to be performed
once . It erases the factory-set default codes
and does not have to be repeated to pro­
gram addit ional remote controls .

starts flashing
slowly . Release the button.
.,. The system will remain in programming
mode for 5 minutes . Co to the front of the
vehicle and proceed with phase 2 .

6. Hold the original remote control at a dis­
tance between 0 -6 in . (0 -15 cm) from the
bumper below the appropriate headlight
for your vehicle

driver side headlight.
8. Press and hold the activation button on
the remote control.

If so, press and
re-press (cycle) the act ivation button on your
remote control every two seconds.
9 . The emergency flashers will flash

times
(after about 15-60 seconds) when
the programm ing is successful. Release
the butto n on the remote control.

10. Press and hold the trained Homelink ®
button and observe the indicator light @

onds and is then a solid/continuous light,

Phase 3: rolling code programming
.,. A second person o n a ladder who can safely
reach the garage door opener motor is rec­
ommended .
11. Locate the "learn" button on the gar age
door opener motor (re fer to the operating
instructions for the opener, as the loca­
tion of t his button may vary by manufac­
turer) .
12 . Press and release the learn button on the
garage door opener motor .
.,. Note : once the button is pressed, there are
30 seconds in which to initiate the next
step.
13. On the Home link® keypad inside the vehi­
cl e, firmly press and hold the Homelink®
button prev iously programmed in phases
1 and 2 for two seconds and release . Re­
peat this sequence
twice.
.,. Some vehicles may require the press/hold/
release sequence up to three times to com­
plete the train ing process .
.,. Homelink ® should now activate your rolling
code equipped device.
If the 5 m inute time limit is exceeded, the
emergency flashers will flash one time to in ­
dicate that the process has been term inated .
In this case, repeat steps 4 through 9.
If the emergency flashers do not flash
three
times (after about lS-60 seconds), program­
ming was not successful. In this case, repeat
steps 4 through 9 .
Remote contro l units for garage door openers
in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
frequency signals after two seconds. This time ..,.

may not be sufficient for the Homelink ® sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency signal. Per­
form all other steps as described above .
Operating the Homelink ® transmitter
The HomeLink ® transmitter works in the
some manner as the original hondheld re­
mote control that come with the system.

Erasing the programming of the
Homelink ® transmitter
When you erase the programming , the pro ­
gramming on all three of the transmitter

be in the programming mode and is then

This chapter contains important information,
tips, instructions and warnings that you need
to read and observe for your own safety, the
safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, airbags, child restraints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us
priori­
ty number 1.
Always observe the information
and warnings in this section - for your own
safety as well as for that of your passengers.
The information in this section applies to all
model versions of your vehicle . Some of the
features described in this section may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others. If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Make certain that you follow the instruc­
tions and heed the WARNINGS in this
Manual. It is in your interest and in the
interest of your passengers.
- Always keep the complete owner's litera­
ture in your Audi when you lend or sell
your vehicle so that this important infor­
mation will always be available to the
driver and passengers.
- Always keep the owner's literature handy
so that you can find it easily if you have
questions.
Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
reduce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations .
Your safety and the safety of your passengers
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a variety of features
available to help reduce the risk of injury in an

accident. The following is a listing of just a
few of the safety features in your Audi:
- sophisticated safety belts for driver and all
passenger seating positions,
- safety belt pretensioners ,
- front airbags,
- knee airbags,
- side airbags in the seats
- adjustable head restraints,
- adjustable steering column.
These individual safety features can work to­
gether as a system to help protect you and
your passengers in a wide range of accidents.
These features cannot work as a system if
they are not always properly adjusted and
properly used!
Safety is everybody's responsibility!
Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehicle and occu­
pant safety always depends on the informed and careful driver.
For your safety and the safety of your passen­
gers,
before driving always:
~ Make sure that all lights and signals are op­
erating correctly .
~ Make sure that the tire pressure is correct.
~ Make sure that all windows are clean and af­
ford good visibility to the outside.
~ Secure all luggage and other items carefully

~ Make sure that nothing can interfere with
the pedals.
~ Adjust front seat, head restraint and mirrors
correctly for your height .
~ Instruct passengers to adjust the head re­
straints according to their height .
~ Make sure to use the right child restraint

-Never modify the front bumper or parts
of the veh icle body.
- Always make sure that the side airbag
can inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or replace­
ment upho lstery ove r the front seat­
backs that have not been spec ifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use add itiona l seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags
inflate .
- Damage to the o rigina l seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air­
bag module must always be repa ired
immediate ly by an authorized Audi
dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only
once . After an airbag has inflated, it
must be replaced by an author ized Audi
dealer or qualif ied technic ian who has
the techn ica l information, tra ining and
special equipment necessary.
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once. After an a irbag has been deployed,
it must be replaced w ith new replace­
ment parts designed and approved espe­
c ially for your Aud i model version. Re­
placemen t of complete ai rbag systems
or airbag components m ust be per­
f ormed by qualified workshops only.

- For safety reasons in severe accidents,
the a lternator and starter are separated
from the vehicle battery with a pyrotech­
nic circuit interrupter.
- Work on the pyrote chnic cir cu it inter­
rupter must on ly be per formed by a
qualified dealer - risk of an accident!
- If the veh icle or the ci rcuit interrupter
is sc rapped, all applicable safety pre ­
cautions must be followed .

Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Chang ing the veh icle's suspens io n system can
c h ange the way that the Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem perfo rms in a crash. For examp le, using
tir e-rim combi nat ions not approved by A udi,
l ower ing the veh icle, chang ing the st iffness of
the suspens ion, including the spr ings, suspen­
sio n struts, shock absorbers etc. can change
the forces that are measured by the airbag
sensors and sent to the electronic contro l
u nit. Some suspension changes can, for exam­
ple, i ncrease the force levels measured by the
sensors and make the airbag system deploy in c rashes in which it wou ld not deploy if the
c h anges had not been made. Other kinds of
c h anges may reduce the fo rce leve ls meas­
u red by the sensors and preven t the airbag
from dep loying when i t should.
T he sensors in the safety be lt buc kle for the
drive r and front passenger seat te ll the e lec ­
tron ic contro l modu le if the s afety be lt is
l atche d or no t. If the safety be lt is being used,
the front airbag will deploy at a slightly high­ er rate of veh icle deceleration than if the safe­
ty belt is not be ing used. Therefore, in a par­
ticular coll is ion, it is possible t hat an airbag
will not deploy at a seat ing pos ition where the
safety belt is be ing used b ut w il l inflate at the
pos ition wher e th e safety be lt is not be ing
used. It is impo rtant that noth ing interfere

typical 1 year -old chi ld, the Advanced Airbag
System compares the weight meas ured by the
weight sensing mat with the in format ion stor­
ed in the electron ic contro l unit.
The electron ic contro l unit a lso registers the
tension on the front passenge r safety belt.
The tens ion on the safety be lt fo r the front
passenger seat will be d ifferent for an adult
who is properly using the safety belt as com­
pared to the tension on t he be lt whe n it is
used to attach a child restraint to the seat.
The senso r below the latch fo r the safety be lt
fo r the front seat passenger measu res the
tension on the be lt. T he inp ut from this sen­
sor is then used with the we igh t to "decide",
whether there is a chi ld restraint with a typica l
1 year-o ld child o n the front passenger seat
and whether or not the airbag must be turned
off.
Child restraints and Advanced Airbags
Regardless of the ch ild restraint that you use,
make sure tha t it has been ce rtified to meet
Un ited States Fede ral Motor Vehicle Safety
S tanda rds a nd has been cer tified by its manu­
facture r fo r u se wit h an air bag. If i n excep­
tional circumstances yo u m ust use it on the
front passenge r seat, caref ully read all of the
info rmation on c hild safety an d Advanced Air­
bags and heed a ll of the app licable WARN­
INGS. Make certai n that t he child restraint is
correctly recognized by the weig ht-sensing
mat i nside the front passenger seat, that the
fro nt passenge r airbag is tur ned off and that
the airbag status is a lways correctly signaled
by the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light .
Many types and models of child restra ints
have been ava ilable over the years, new mod­
e ls ar e introduced regularly incorporat ing new
a nd improved designs a nd older models are
taken out of p ro du ction. Child res traints are
not stan dardized . Ch ild restra ints o f the same
type typically have different weights and s izes
a nd d ifferent 'footprints,' the s ize and s hape
of the bottom o f the child restraint that sits
on the seat, when they are installed on a veh i­
cle seat. These differences make it virtually impossible to certify compliance wi
th t he re ­
quirements for a dvanced airbags with eac h
and every ch ild restra int that has ever been
sold in the past or wi ll be sold over the course
of the useful life of your veh icle.
For t his reason, the United States National
Hig hway T raffic Safety Adm inistrat ion has
published a list of spec ific type, ma kes and
m odels of child restraints that must be used
to certify comp liance of the Advanced Airbag
System i n your veh icle w ith the su ppr ession
r equirem ents of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety

Changing the engine oil
The engine oil and o il filter must be changed
according to the mi leage (ki lometers) and
time interva ls specified in your vehicle's War­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet . Do not exceed
these intervals -harmful depos its from old
engine o il can reduce engine performance and
can lead to expensive engine repairs .
C hanging the o il at the recommended inter­
va ls is so very important because the lubricat­
ing properties of oi l decrease gradually during
normal vehicle use. If you are not sure when
you have your o il changed, ask your author­
ized A udi Service Advisor .
Under some circumstances the engine o il
should even be changed more frequently .
C hange o il mo re often if you dr ive mostly
short d istances , operate the vehicle in dusty
a reas or mostly under s top-and -go traffic con­
d itions , or when yo u use your veh icle whe re
temperatures stay below free zing point fo r
l ong periods .
D etergent add it ives i n the o il w ill ma ke fresh
oil look dark after the eng ine has been run­
n ing fo r a shor t time . This is no rma l and is not
a reason to change the oi l more often than
recommended.
Damage or malfun ction s due t o lack of
maintenance
I t is essential that you change your oil at the
r ecommended in te rvals using only engine o il
th at compl ies wi th A udi oil st andard VW 502
00. Yo ur Limited New Veh icle War ran ty does
not cover damage or malfunctions due to fa il­
ure to follow recommended maintenance and
use requ irements as set forth in the A udi
Owner's Manual and Warranty

Engine oil specifications (10-cyl. ­
engine)

The engine in your Audi needs the right kind
of oil.
The engine in your A udi is a sophisticated
powerplant that was built to exact ing spec ifi­
cations . T hi s eng ine needs the right k ind of
engi ne oil that meets specifications regarding
quality and v iscosity so that it can run
smoothly and reliably. Choosing the rig ht o il
and changing oil within the t ime and mileage
in tervals p rin ted in you r vehicle's Wa rra nty
&
Mainten ance booklet matte rs a lot more to ­
day than it did years ago . Aud i has deve loped
a specia l quality sta ndard for engine oi l th at
will help assure that your vehicle's engine wi ll
get the lubr ication it needs for proper opera­
t ion.
Modern engine lubrication has ta ken a quan­
tum leap in the last few years . Many synthetic
o ils available today provide better engine lu­
brication that can outlast tradit ional petrole­
um-based oils, making them a sma rt cho ice
for use throughout the life of your Audi .
Whether you use synthetic o r pet ro le um­
based engine oil, the oil that you use must
conform to Aud i's oil quality standards
VW 50 1 01 or VW SOS 00 and m ust have a
viscosity of SAE lOW-60 to help keep your ve­
hicle's engine running smoo thly a nd he lp p re­
ven t the forma tion of h armf ul deposits,
some times called "s ludge," tha t over t ime can
l ead to expensive repairs.
At the time of pr int ing, engi ne oils ava ilable in
t h e U.S. and Canada th at meet the exac ting
spec ifica tions of Audi oil s tanda rds
VW 50 1 01 or VW SOS 00 with the viscosity of
SAE lOW-60 are synthetic engine oils. This
does not mean, however, that every synthet ic
engine oil will meet Audi oil standards

- Audi does not recommend the use of oil
additives. They may damage the engine

when d isposing of empty oil containers.
Engine cooling system
Coolant
The engine coolant performs two functions: it
keeps the engine from overheating and it pro­ tects the engine from freezing in the winter.
The cooling system is sea led and generally re­
q ui res lit tle at ten tion.
The cooling system has been filled at the fac­
tory with a pe rma nent coolant which does not
need to be changed. The coolant consists of a
mix ture o f wa ter and the m anu fa ctu rer 's g ly ­
col -based coolant addit ive Gl3 antifreeze
with anticorrosion additives (50% for USA mod els; 60% for Canadian models) . This mix ­
ture both assures the necessary frost protec ­
tion and protects metal components i n the
engine's cooling system from corrosion and
scaling .
It also raises the bo iling po int of the
coolant.
Do not reduce the concentration of the coo l­
ant in the summer by adding plain water.
The
proportion of coolant addit ive must b e at
lea st 50% but not more than 60 %
to main­
tain antifree ze protection and cooling efficie n­
cy.
If t he cool ant frost pro tect io n is too low,
the coo lant cou ld freeze and damage the veh i­
cle heating and engine cooling system.

For year -round driving, antifreeze is added at
the factory for temperatures down to:
- -31°F(-35°C)USA
- -40 °F ( -40 °C) Canada.

checke d to see if the cool ant a ddi tive in
yo ur vehicle is sufficient to meet the cli ­
mate conditions . This is especia lly impor ­
tant if you live in a region where the win­
ter is extreme ly cold. I f necessary, in­
crease the proportion of coo lant add itive
to 60% .
- When adding coolant additive to your cooling system, remember :
- We re commend using o nly coola nt ad­
di tive G l2++ or Gl3 (check the l abe l)
for your vehi cle. This coolan t additive is
ava ila ble at autho rize d Aud i dea le rs .
Othe r ty pes of antifreeze can sig nifi­
cantly reduce corros ion protection. The
resu lting corrosion can cause a loss of
coolant and serio us engine damage.
- Do not add any type of rad iator leak seal ­
ant to yo ur vehicle 's engine coolant.
Add ing radiator repair flu id may adverse­
ly affect the f unction and performance of
your cooling system and co uld resu lt in
damage not covered by you r New Vehicl e
Li mited War ran ty.

Because tec hnical changes may be made to
ve hicle equ ipment dur ing the model yea r, a l­
ways compare the tire size designation on the
tire pressure labe l on your vehicle w ith the
tires on your vehicle . Make s ure that the t ire
size information on the ve hicle label is the
same as the size of the tires on the vehicle.
This is especially important if the vehicle be­
longs to someone else or you bough t the veh i­
cle with different rims/tires or you bought the
ve hicle as a previously owned vehicle .
Remember, your safety and that of your pas­
sengers also depends on mak ing sure that
load limits are not exceeded . Vehicle load in ­
cludes everybody and everything in and on the
vehicle. These load lim its are technically refer­
r ed to as the vehicle 's Gross Vehicle We ight
Rating ("GVWR"). The G ross Ax le Weight Rat­
ing ("GAWR") is the maximum load that can
be applied at each of the vehicle's two axles .
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and the
G ross Axle Weight Rating are listed on the safety compl
iance sticker label located on the
driver's side 8-pillar. The tire p ressure labe l on
yo ur Audi lists the max im um combined
weight of all o f the occ upants and luggage or
othe r ca rgo that the vehicle can carry. Fo r the

A WARNING
Overloading a vehicle can cause loss of ve­
h icle contro l, a crash or other accident, se­
rious personal injury, and even death.
- Carrying more we ight than your veh icle
was designed to carry will prevent the
veh icle from handling properly a nd i n­
crease the risk of a loss of vehicle con ­
trol.
- The brakes on a vehicle that has been
overloaded may not be able to stop the
veh icle w ith in a safe distance.
- Tires on a vehicle that has been overload ­
ed can fail suddenly ca using loss of con­
trol and a crash.

cause ma lfunction of the tire pressure moni­
toring system, and is not recommended (cord
materia l information in molded on the tire
sidewall).
A lways check your tire pressure monitoring
system indicator after replacing one or more
tires on your vehicle . If the tire pressure mon i­
toring system indicator flashes, or is on, your
system is not working properly.
A WARNING
-Us ing incorrect or unmatched tires and/
or wheels or improper tire and wheel
combinations can lead to loss of cont rol,
co llision and serious persona l injury.
- Always use tires, rims and wheel bo lts
that meet the specifications of orig inal
factory-installed t ires or other combina­
t ions that have been specifically ap­
proved by the vehicle manufac turer .
- T ires age even if they are not be ing used
and can fail suddenly, especially at high
speeds. Tires that are more than 6 years
o ld can only be used in an emergency

- Never mount used tires on yo ur vehicle if
you are not sure of their "previous histo­
ry." Old used tires may have been dam­
aged even though the damage cannot be
seen that can lead to sudden tire failure
and loss of vehicle control.
- Only the wheel/tire s izes specified by the
manufacturer may be used on veh icles
with all-wheel dr ive.
- Never drive faster than the maximum
speed for which the tires on your veh icle
are rated because ti res that are driven
fas ter than their rated speed can fail
sudden ly.
- Overloading t ires cause heat build-up,
sudden tire failure, incl uding a blowout
and sudden deflation and loss of control.
- Temperature grades app ly to tires that
are prope rly inflated and not over or un­
derinflated. -
For technica l reasons it is not always
possible to use wheels from other
vehicles -in some cases not even wheels
from the same veh icle model.
- Do not use run-flat tires on your vehicle.
Using run-flat tires can lead to veh icle
damage or crashes .
(D Note
-For technical reasons, it is not generally
possible to use the wheel rims from oth­
er veh icles . Th is can hold true for wheels
of the same vehicle type .
- If you should put different wheels and
tires on your veh icle (e.g. winter wheels
and tires), you must be certain that the
wheels and tires are compatible with the
tire pressure monitoring system. Other­
w ise the system will register a malfunc­
tion and a fau lt message w ill be dis­
played. For more information, contact
your authorized Audi dealer.
(D Note
- When installing new tires, be care ful not
to damage the valves or tire pressure
monitoring system sensors.
- Never drive without the valve stem cap.
The va lves co uld get damaged.
- If the sensors must be replaced, then
the valve must also be replaced at the
same time.

A WARNING ,~
Using the wrong snow chains for your vehi­
cle or installing them incorrectly can in ­
crease the risk of loss of control leading to
serious personal injury.
- Snow chains are available in different sizes. Always make sure to follow the in­structions provided by the snow chain
manufacturer .
- When driving with snow chains, never
drive faster than the speed permitted for
your specific snow chains.
- Always observe local regulations .
(D Note
-Remove snow chains before driving on
roads not covered with snow to avoid
damaging tires and wearing the snow
chains down unnecessarily.
- Snow chains, which come into direct con­
tact with the wheel rim, can scratch or
damage it . Therefore, make sure that the
snow chains are suitably covered. Check
the position of the snow chains after
driving a few yards and correct if neces­
sary. Follow the instructions from the
snow chain manufacturer when doing so.
@ Tips
Where snow chains are mandatory oncer­
tain roads, this normally also applies to
vehicles with all-wheel drive.
Wheel bolts
Wheel bolts must always be tightened to the
correct torque.
The design of wheel bolts is matched to the
factory installed rims. If different rims are fit­
ted, the correct wheel bolts with the right length and correctly shaped bolt heads must
be used. This ensures that wheels are fitted
securely and that the brake system functions
correctly .

A WARNING
Improperly tightened or maintained wheel
bolts can become loose causing loss of
control, a collision and serious personal in­
jury.
- Always keep the wheel bolts and the
threads in the wheel hubs clean so the
wheel bolts can turn easily and be prop­ erly tightened.
- Never grease or oil the wheel bolts and
the threads in the wheel hubs . They can
become loose while driving if greased or
oiled, even if tightened to the specified
torque.
- Only use wheel bolts that belong to the
rim being installed.
- Never use different wheels bolts on your
vehicle.
-Always maintain the correct tightening
torque for the wheel bolts to reduce the
risk of a wheel loss. If the tightening tor­
que of the wheel bolts is too low, they
can loosen and come out when the vehi­
cle is moving. If the tightening torque is
too high, the wheel bolts and threads can be damaged and the wheel can be­
come loose.
(D Note
The specified torque for the wheel bolts is
90 ft lb (120 Nm) with a tolerance of ± 7 .4
ft lb(± 10 Nm). Torque wheel bolts diago­
nally. After changing a wheel, the torque
must be checked as soon as possible with a
torque wrench -preferably by an author­
ized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
Low aspect ratio tires
Your Audi is factory-equipped with low aspect
ratio tires. These tires have been thoroughly
tested and been selected specifically for your model for their superb performance, road feel .,.
