Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps:
• Insert the key into the ignition lock .
• Press the key briefly
without pressing the
brake pedal.
• To switch the ignition off, press the key
again.
When starting the engine, major electrical
loads are switched off temporarily.
You can only remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
- Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never remove the ignition key from the
ignition look while the vehicle is moving.
Otherwise, the steering lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­ caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures.

The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key. The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherw ise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minu tes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bui ld-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.

This message appears for safety reasons

selector lever for the automat ic transm iss ion

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

With the ignition switched on, step on the
brake peda l or the accelerator pedal and
press the switch @ at the same time to re ­
lease the parking brake . The indicator lights

ada models) in the instrument cluster go
out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­ chanical parking brake. The parking brake is
designed to prevent the veh icle from rolling
u nintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
In add ition to the normal functions of a tradi­
t ional hand brake, the electromechanical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safe ty funct ions .
When starting from rest
-The integral start ing ass ist helps you when
driving by automatically releasing the park­
ing brake

- When start ing o n inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
ly rolling back. The braking force of the
pa rking brake is not released until suffic ient
driving force has been bui lt up at the
wheels.
Emergency brake function
An emergency brake ensures that the veh icle
can be slowed down even i f the normal brakes
fail ¢ page 79, Emergency braking.
A WARNING
If a drive rang e is engaged with the vehicle
stationary and the engine running, yo u
must in no instance accelerate carelessly.
Otherwise the vehi cle wi ll start to move
immediately -risk of an accident.

Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise co ntrol
The adaptive cruise control system assists the
driver by regulating vehicle speed and helping
to maintain a set distance to the vehicle
ahead, within the limits of the system .
If the
system detects a moving vehicle up ahead,
adaptive cruise control can brake and then ac ­
celerate your vehicle. This he lps to make driv­
ing more comfortable on long highway
stretches.
The braking guard system can warn you about
an impending collision and initiate braking
maneuvers

Adaptive cruise control and braking guard
have technical limitations that you must
know, so please read this section carefully, un­
derstand how the system works and use them
properly at all times.
General information

The area that contains the radar sensor

or other objects or obstructed with dirt, in­
sects, snow or i ce that will interfere with the
adaptive cruise control system and braking

he function of the adaptive cruise cont rol
system and braking guard is limited under
some condit ions:
- Objects can only be detected when they are
within sensor range

-The system has a limited ability to detect
objects that are a short d istance ahead, off
to the side of your vehicle or moving into
your lane.
- Some kinds of vehicles are hard to detect;
for examp le motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging loads may
be detected when it is too late or they may
not be detected at all.

A WARNING

Always pay attention to traffic when adap-
tive cruise contro l is switched on and brak­
ing guard is active. As the driver, you are
still respons ible for starting and for main­
tain ing speed and distance to other ob­
jects. Braking guard is used to assist you.
The driver must always take action to avoid
a col lision. The driver is always responsible
for braking at the correct time.
- Im proper use of adaptive cruise con trol
can cause collisions, other accidents and
serio us personal injury.
- Never let the comfor t and convenience
that adaptive cruise control and braking
guard offer distract you from the need to
be alert to traffic conditions and the
need to remain in full control of your ve­
h icle at a ll times,
- Always remember that the adaptive
cru ise contro l and brak ing guard have
lim its -they will not s low the vehicle
down or maintain the set distance when
you drive towards an obstacle or some ­
thing on or near the road that is not
mov ing, such as vehicles stopped in a
traffic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensor, vehicles
or obsta cles that are not moving can
trigger a co llision warning and if

comb ine settings such as a sporty engine tun ­
ing with comfortable steering.

The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the veh icle's features . However, the engin e,
automa tic t ransmissio n and s teeri ng a re a l­
ways involved.

Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode , the e ng ine and the
automatic t ransm ission respond quicke r or i n
a more ba la nced manne r to a cce le rator pedal
move ments. In t he sporty dynam ic mode, the
a ut om at ic t ra nsmissio n shifts at h igher R PMs.
The engine sound is ad justed by open ing or
clos ing t he exhaust doors for the respective
mode .
Steering
The stee ring ada pts in te rms of stee ring effort
an d steer ing ra tios. In direc t steer ing t hat
moves easi ly, like the stee ring in comfort
mode , is best su ite d to long dr ives on a high ­
way. In contrast, dynam ic mode p rov ides
sporty, d irect steering. T
he following app lies to veh icles with dynamic
stee ring *: the steering rat io chan ges base d on
vehicle speed in order to ma inta in optim um
steering effort for the driver at all times. This
sets the steering to be less sens itive at higher
speeds in o rder to provide improved vehicle
co ntrol. At r educed speeds, howeve r, s teer ing
is mo re d irect in o rder to k eep th e stee ring ef­
fo rt as minima l as poss ible whe n the drive r is
mane uveri ng the veh icle. At low and ave rage
s p eeds, dynamic steering ad dit iona lly pro ­
vides more responsive stee ring pe rformance .
Sport differential*
As a compone nt of the all whee l dr ive system
(qua ttro)
~ page 1 76 , the sp ort differential*
distributes the d riving power to the rear axle
depen ding on the si tuatio n. The dis trib ution
of power var ies depending on the mode se­
l ected . The goal is a high level of agility and
ability to accelerate on curves . The vehicle is
very respons ive to steering.
Audi adaptive cruise control*
T he be hav io r when accelera ting can be adjus t­
ed from comfortab le to sporty, de pendi ng on
t h e d rive select mode . Adaptive cru ise contro l
also responds to the driv ing behavior o f the
vehicle ahead in a more conservative or sporty man ner .
Engine sound*
The so und of the eng ine is adapte d to these ­
l ected mode and ranges from s ubt le to sporty .

Sensors in the bumper
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers. If these detect an obstacle, audible
and visual signals warn you. The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx­
i mately :
side 3
ft (0.90 m)
front center 4
ft (1.20 m)
side 2
ft (0.60 m)
rear center 5 .2 ft (1.60 m)
Distance warning when reversing starts when
an obstacle is detected in the range of the
parking assist system. As the distance de­
creases, the time interva l between the audib le
tones becomes shorter.
When the distance is less than 1 ft (0 .30 m),
the tone becomes continuous. At this point
you should stop backing up.
If the d istance to an obstacle stays the same,
the volume of the distance signal chime is
gradually reduced after about 4 seconds (does
Park assist 107
not affect the continuous signal tone). Ap­
proaching another obstacle will cause the dis­
tance signal to sound again at the norma l vo l­
ume .
Rear view camera coverage area
The MMI display shows the area covered by
the rear view camera

that are not in the area covered @are not
shown on the MMI display .
We recommend that you practice parking with
the rear view camera in a traffic-free location
or parking lot to become familiar with the sys­
tem, the orientation lines, and their function.
When doing this, there should be good light
and weather cond itions.
In the MMI display, objects or vehicles appear
closer or further away if:
-you are driving in reverse gear from a leve l
surface onto an incline, or a downward
slope,
-you are driving in reverse gear toward pro­
trud ing ob jects,
- the vehicle is car ry in g too much load in the
rear.
The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue
surfaces diminishes if:
- the rear view camera does not provide a reli­
able image, for example, in poor visibility
conditions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not vis ible due to
sun glare and reflection.
Caring for the rear view camera lens
The rear view camera is located above the rear
license plate bracket. For the parking assist to
operate, the lens

clean:
- Dampen the lens with a household alcohol­
based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth

preferably with a de-ic ing spray
