Starting and stopping the engine
Starting the engine
The engine can only be st arted with your origin al Audi
key.

- Set the parking bra ke.

ment
- On vehicles with manual tra nsm ission, f ully depress the
clutch pedal.
- Turn the ign ition key to position

warming up .
- When the warning light goes out, turn the ignition ke y to
position @ to start the engine@=>

Do not depress the gas pedal when star ting the eng ine!
- Let go of the key as soon as the engine starts.
A co ld engine may sound loud after it has been started. This is due
to the hydrau lic va lves building up oi l pressure . This is normal and
is not a need for concern .
I f the engine does not start i mmediately, stop trying after 10
seconds and then try to res tart the engine about 30 seconds la ter .
Glow plug system *
D ie sel engin es
are equ ipped wi th a glow p lug system whose
preheating time is controlled by the coolant and outside tempera ­
ture . S tar t the engine
immediately after the glow plug indicator l ight
switches off .
The glow plug indicator light wi ll only il luminate for approximately
1 s econd when the engin e is warm or the outside temp erature is
higher than 46 °F (8 °C). That means you can start the engine
imme­
diately .
To st art the di esel engin e after the fuel t ank ha s be en
run dr y
If the fue l tank was run completely dry, the starting process after
refuel ing with diesel fuel can take longer than usual -up to one
minute. This is because the fue l system first has to be vented o f air
while starting. _,.

Never start or let the engine run in a confined or enc losed area .
Exhaust fumes from the engine contain carbon monoxide , a color ­
le ss and odorless gas . Carbon monoxide can be fatal if inhaled .
• Never leave the engine idling unattended . An unattended
vehi cle with a runn ing engine poses a danger of personal injury or
theft.

loads while the engi ne is sti ll cold. This cou ld damage the engine.
• The e ngi ne canno t be sta rt e d by pushing o r to w ing the vehicle.
~ For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to re duce ex hau st emis ­
sions, do not let your vehicle stand and warm up. Be ready to drive
off immed iate ly afte r start ing y our veh icle. Maintain modera te
sp eed unt il the engine is completely warm. Remembe r, th e engine
performs best a t operati ng tempe ra ture .•
Stopping the engine
- Turn t he ignit ion key to position © ~ page 106 , fig. 108.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
• The brake booster and servotroni c only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off , you have to apply more
force when steering or braking . Since you cannot steer and stop
normally, this can lead to accidents and serious injuries .

• The radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10 minutes even
after you have turned off the engine and removed the ignition key .
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of inten se sunlight or heat build -up in the engine
compartment .

Do not stop the engine immediatel y after hard or extended driving.

excessive heat build -up. •

- Pu ll the parking brake lever up slight ly and press the
release button at the same time~

- Keep the release button pressed and lower the parking brake ~& .
If you should drive off with the parking brake sti ll set, a warning tone
will sound and the fo llowing wil l appear in the instrument cluster to
remind you to re lease the parking brake:
Parking brak e set
The parking brake warning comes on only after you have driven for
longer than 3 seconds and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h).

(CDN) illuminates
when the parking brake is set and you switch on the ignition .

br ake w ill overheat the r ear brake s, reduce their effective ness and

dent .

Only after the vehicle has come to co mplete stop, should you firm ly
set the parking brake and either move the gearshift lever into 1st .
gear (manual transmission) or move the selector lever into "P"
(Automatic transmission). •
Controls and equip­
ment
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling away, there are a
few things you should do.
When you park your vehic le, do the fo llowi ng:
- Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- Set the parking bra ke firm ly .
- Move the selector lever into the
P pos ition ( automatic
tran smi ssion)
or m ove the gea rshi ft lever into 1s t. gear
(manual transmission ) ~ &.
- Switch off the engine and remove the ignitio n key from
t h e igniti on loc k.
Wh at else you should d o wh en p arking your vehicle o n
a n i ncline or dec line
Turn the steering wheel so that if the vehicle should start to roll, it
will ro ll into the curb.
I f you are parking on a
declin e (the front of your vehic le facing
downhill!, turn the front wheels to the right so that they point
toward the curb .
If you are parking on an incline (the font of your vehicle fac ing
uphill!, turn the front whee ls to the left so that they point
away from
the curb.
Move the selector lever into the P position ( autom atic tran sm iss ion)
or move the gearshift leve r into 1st. gear (manual tr ansmi ssion ).

Thi s is how you can redu ce the r isk of injury when leaving y our
vehi cle .
• Never p ark the vehi cle where it can come in conta ct with dr y

The selector lever lock is effective only when the vehicle is
stationary and at speeds below 5 km/h. At higher speeds, the lock in
the N position is automatically switched off.
The selector lever is not locked when rapid shifts are made through
t he N position (e.g . from R to Dl. This allows you to "rock" the vehicle
if it becomes stuck . If the lever is in the N position for more than
1 second with the brake pedal not depressed, the selector lock
engages automatically.
Release b utt o n
The release button in the selector lever handle prevents accidental
shifts in to certain selector lever positions. When you press the
re lease button, the selector lever lock is cancelled. In the illustra ­
t ion, the positions in which the release button has to be pressed are
highlighted in color=>
page 115, fig. 115.
Igniti on k ey remo val lock
The ignition key can only be remove after the ignition is switched off
if the selector lever is in P . As long as the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever is locked in P.
[ i J Tip s
If the selector lever does not engage, there is a malfunction . The
engine is disabled to prevent the vehicle from driving off uninten­
tiona lly. To a llow the selector lever to engage again, proceed as
follows: Press and release the brake pedal. •

The forward gears are shifted up or down automatically .

Stopping temporarily
- Bring t he vehicle to a full stop wit h the brake, e.g. at
traffic signals.
- Do not accelerate.

- Hold the re lease button down, move the s elector lever to

• Never let any person ride with their feet on the instrument
panel or sticking out the window or on the seat.
• Never remove a safety belt while the vehicle is moving. Doing
so will increase your risk of being injured or killed.
• Never wear belts twisted.
• Never wear belts over rigid or breakable objects in or on your
clothing, such as eye glasses, pens, keys, etc. , as these may cause
injury .
• Never allow safety belts to become damaged by being caught
in door or seat hardware.
• Do not wear the shoulder part of the belt under your arm or
otherwise out of position.
• Several layers of heavy clothing may interfere with correct posi­
tioning of belts and reduce the overall effectiveness of the system.
• Always keep belt buckles free of anything that may prevent the
buckle from latching securely.
• Never use comfort clips or devices that create slack in the
shoulder belt. However, special clips may be required for the
proper use of some child restraint systems.
• Torn or frayed safety belts can tear , and damaged belt hard­
ware can break in an accident . Inspect belts regularly . If webbing,
bindings, buckles, or retractors are damaged, have belts replaced
by an authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop .
• Safety belts that have been worn and loaded in an accident
must be replaced with the correct replacement safety belt by an
authorized Audi dealer. Replacement may be necessary even if
damage cannot be clearly seen. Anchorages that were loaded
must also be inspected.
• Never remove, modify, disassemble, or try to repair the safety
belts yourself.

To provide maximum protection, safety belts must always
be positioned correctly on the wearer's body.
Adjust the front seat and head restraint properly
=> page 72, "General recommendations" .
Make sure the seat back of the rear seat bench is in an
upright position and securely latched in place before
using the belt

Hold the belt by the tongue and pull it evenly across the
chest and pelvis

Pull on t he belt to make sure that it is securely latched in
the buckle.

Eve ry safety be lt is equipped with an automatic belt retractor on the
shoulder belt. This feature locks the belt when the belt is pulled out
fast, during hard braking and in an accident. The belt may a lso lock
when you drive up or down a steep hill or through a sharp curve .
During normal driving the belt lets you move free ly.
Safety belt prete nsi oners
The safety belts are equipped with a be lt pretensioner that he lps to
tighten the sa fety be lt and remove slack when the pretensioner is
activated. The function of the pretensioner is monitored by a
warning light=>
page 14 .

Every safety belt except the one on the driver sea t is equipped with
a switchab le locking feature that
must be used when the safety belt
is used to a ttach a chi ld safe ty sea t. Be sure to read the important
information about this feature=>
page 177.

Improper ly positioned safet y belts can cause seriou s inj ury in an

• Safet y belts offer opt imum protection on ly when the seat back
i s upright and belt s are properly po sition ed on t he bod y.
• Always make sure that the rear seat backrest to whi ch the

the rear center saf ety belt i s being us ed. If the ba ckrest is not
s ecu rely lat ched, the pas senge r will mo ve fo rward with the back ­

Standard features on your vehicle help you adjust the position of
the safety belt to match your body size .
• belt height adjustment for the front seats,
• automatic belt height adjustment for the rear seats.

• Before reaching into the front plenum panel, always remove the
ignition key . Otherwise, the windshield wiper system could unin ­
tentionally be switched on , possibly causing personal in jury from
the moving wiper linkage .
• Never reach into the area around or touch the radiator fan . The
auxiliary fan is temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly
- even when the ignition is off.
• Do not wash, wax or dry the engine with the engine running .
Moving or hot parts could injure you .
• Do not clean the underside of the chassis , fenders , wheel
covers, or other hard to reach parts without protecting your hands
and arms. You may cut yourself on sharp-edged metal parts.
• Always read and heed all WARNINGS and other information

Closing the engine hood
- Pull the hood down until the pressure from the strut is
reduced.
- Let the hood
drop down and latch in place. Do not try to
push it shut;
it may fail to engage~& .
& WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could fly up and block your
view while driving.
• When you close the engine hood, check it to make sure the
safety catch has properly engaged. The hood should be flush with
the surrounding vehicle body parts.
• If you notice while driving that the hood is not secured prop­
erly, stop at once and close it. •
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine
compartment!
Whenever you must perform any work in the engine compartment,
for example checking and filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury always
observe the following WARNINGS. The engine compartment of any
vehicle is a hazardous area!

To help avoid injury, before you check anything under the hood :
• Turn off the engine.
• Remove the ignition key.
• Set the parking brake fully .

• Move selector lever of automatic transmission to "P" {Park);
put manual transmission in Neutral.
• Always let the engine cool down. Hot components will burn
skin on contact.
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood .
• Keep children away from the engine compartment.
• Never spill fluids on hot engine components. They can cause a
fire.
• Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary electric fan is
temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly.
• Never open the coolant reservoir cap when the engine is still
warm. The coolant system is pressurized and hot coolant could
spray out!
• Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine
coolant by placing a thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir.
• If work on the fuel system or the electrical system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery .
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in
the engine compartment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher immediately available.
• To avoid electrical shock and personal injury while the engine
is running or being started, never touch :
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage electronic ignition
system.
• If you must perform a check or repair with the engine running: .,_

Fuses
Replacing a fuse
A problem in the electrical system may be caused by a
blown fuse.

- Switch off the ignition and the electrical component
affected. - Carefully pry the fuse cover off the instrument panel
using the ignition key or a screwdriver~ fig. 192.
- Check the fuse listing on the next pages to find out which
fuse belongs to the component which has failed
~ page 279, "Fuse Locatio n, Instrume nt Panel left".
- Remove the blown fuse with the plastic clip provided.
The clip is located on the holder in the fuse box.
- Replace a blown fuse (recognizable by the melted metal
strip inside) w ith a fuse of the same amperage .
- Firmly snap the cover back onto the instrument panel
face.

- Switch the ignition and the affected consumer off.
- Unlatch the fuse cover, push the two slides forward
~ fig. 193.
- Find out which fuse belongs to the equipment which
stopped working~ page 281, "Fuse location, left side of
engine compartment".
- Remove the plastic from its reta iner in the fuse box cover
(left face end of the instrument panel), place it on the
fuse in question and pull it out.
- If the fuse is burned out (recognizable by melted strips of
metal), replace it with a new fuse of the same rating.
- Replace the fuse cover.
- Push the two slides to the rear~ fig. 193. Install the fuse
cover carefully to prevent water from entering.
