climatecontrolsareacombinationofau­
tomaticheatingandventilationsystemsanda
cooling
systemwhichdehumidifiesandcools
theair insidethevehicle.
The
climatecontrolsautomaticallymaintaina
temperatureonceithasbeenset.Thetem­
peratureoftheairfromthevents,fanspeed
(air volume)andairdistributionarealsoauto­
maticallyadjusted.Thesystemalsotakesinto
accountstrongsunshine50thatmanualad­
justmentisnotnecessary. 50inalmostall

automaticmodeoffersthebestcondi­
tionsforthecomfortoftheoccupantsatall

tohave your brakepadsinspectedcanresult
inreducedbrakeperformance.
Onsteepslopes,youshouldusethebraking
effectoftheengine.Thisway, youpreventun­
necessarywearonthebrakesystem.Ifyou
mustuseyour brakes, donotholdthebrakes~
downcontinuously.Pumpthebrakesatinter­
vals.
Noises mayoccur when braking
dependingon
thespeed,braking forceandoutsidecondi­
tions
suchastemperatureandhumidity.
Moistureorroadsalt
Undercertainconditions,forexa mple,when
drivingthroughwaterorvery heavy rain,or
evenafterwashingyourvehicle,thebraking
effect can

Corrosion

fuelconsumptionby10-15percent.This sec­

(EPA)andTransportCanadamaynotcorre­
spondtoyouractualconsumptiononthe
road, which willvarydependinguponvehi­

ditions,triplength,etc.
Drive smoothly andkeep alookout1ahead
Vehicles usethemostfuel when theyareac­
celerating.
Avoidunnecessaryacceleratingandbraking.
Vehicles
usethemostfuelwhentheyareac­
celerating.Ifyouanticipatewhatisgoingto
happennext, youwillneedtobrake lessand,
thus,accelerateless. Letthevehiclecoast
wheneverpossible-forexamplewhenyousee
thatthenexttrafficlightisred.
Avoid
fullthrottle•
Drivingatmoderate speedssavesfueland
improves yourmileage.
~Tryandkeepwellbelowyourcar's maxi­
mumspeed.
Acceleratinggentlyreducesfuelconsump­

Fuel
consumption,exhaustemissionsand en­
ginenoiseincreasedisproportionatelyathigh
speeds.Ifyou driveatapproximatelythree
quartersoftopspeed,fuelconsumptionwill

reducedbyonehalf. Never drivefaster
thanthepostedspeedlimitandweathercon­
ditionspermit.
Reducing unnecessary idling
EvenwhenyourcarisJustidlingitburns up
fuel.

enginerunatidle.
Itmakessensetoshutofftheengineintraffic
jams,
whenwaitingfortrainstopassatrail­

just30-40secondssavesmorefuelthanis
burned
startingtheengineagain.
Ittakesa longtimefortheenginetowarmup
fully
whenitisrunningatidle. However,wear
andnoxiousemissionsareespeciallyhigh
when
theengineiswarmingup.50youshould
drive awayassoonasyoustarttheengineand
avoidrunningathighRPMs whiletheengine
isstillwarmingup.

Youmustdriveyourvehicleabout3,000miles

assessoilconsumption.
Thisalsoappliestofuelconsumptionanden­

orAPISMspecifications,buteventhen,only
inviscositygradesSAESW-40,SAE5W-30,or
5AE OW-40. However,duringtheentiretime
betweenoilchangeintervals,nevertopoff
withmorethanatotalof0.5qt/literengine
ailthatdoesnotconformtoAudioilspecifica­
tionVW50200.

Viscosity
Engine oilsaregradedaccordingtotheirvis­
cosity. The
praperviscositygradeoilforyour
enginedependsonclimacticorseasonalcon­
ditions
whereyou drive.Voucanuseoilwitha
viscosity
gradeofSAESW40acrossalltem­
peraturerangesfornormaldrivingconditions.
However, ifengineoilviscositygradeSAE
SW40isnotavailable,youcanalsouseviscos­
itygradeSAESW-30orSAEOW-40aslongas
ItmeetsAudi oilqualitystandardVWS0200
Specifications.
Because
engineoilthatmeetstheAudi oil
standardmaynotbeavailableeverywhere
when youneedit,westronglyrecommend
thatyoualwayscarrywithyouanextraquart
(lIter)ofoilthatexpresslyconformstothe
oilsavailabletodayprovidebetterenginelu­
brication
thatcanoutlasttraditionalpetrole­
um-based oils,makingthemasmartchoice
forusethraughoutthelifeofyourAudi.

usesyntheticorpetraleum­
bas
edengineoil,theoilthatyouusemust
conformtoAudi's oilqualitystandard
V\N50200tohelpkeepyourvehicle'sengine
runningsmoothlyandhelppreventthefor­
mation
ofharmfuldeposits,sometimescalled
"sludge,"thatovertimecanleadtoexpensive
repairs.
Atthetimeofprinting,engineailsavailablein
theUSandCanadathatmeettheexacting
specificationsofAudi oilstandardVW50200
aresyntheticengineoils.Thisdoesnotmean,
however,thateverysyntheticengineoilwill
meetAudi oilstandardVW50200.Soalways
besurethatyouuseanapprovedoil.
Tohelppreventtheformationofharmfulde­
positsuseonlyoilwiththefollowingspecifi­

Theengineinyourvehicle depends onan ade­

amountofoilto lubricate andcoolail
ofitsmoving parts.
Inordertoprovideeffectivelubricationand
coolingofinternaLenginecomponents,allin­
ternalcombustionenginesconsumeacertain
amountofoil.Oilconsumptionvariesfram
enginetoengineandmaychangesignificantly
overthelifeoftheengine.Typically,engines
withaspecified break-inperiod(see
~page162)consumemoreoilduringthe
break-inperiodthantheyconsumeafteroil
consumptionhasstabilized.
Undernormalconditions,therateofoilcon­
sumptiondependsonthequalityandviscosity
oftheoil,theRPM(revolutionsperminute)at
whichtheengineisoperated,theambient
temperatureandroadconditions.Furtherfac­
torsaretheamountofoildilutionfromwater
condensationorfuelresidueandtheoxida­
tionleveloftheoil.Asanyengineissubjectto
wearasmileagebuildsup,theoilconsump­
tionmayincreaseovertimeuntilreplacement
ofworncomponentsmaybecomenecessary.

Coolant
Theengine coolant performs twofunctions:it
keeps theengine fromoverheating anditpro­
tects theengine fromfreezing
inthewinter.
Thecoolingsystemissealedandgenerallyre­
quires little
attention.
Thecoolingsystemhasbeenfilledatthefac­
tory with a
permanentcoolantwhichdoesnot
needtobechanged.Thecoolantconsistsofa
mixture
ofwaterandthemanufacturer'sgly­
col-basedcoolantadditive G12++antifreeze
withanticorrosion additives(50%forUSA
models;60%forCanadianmodels).This mix­
ture
bathassuresthenecessaryfrostprotec­
tion and
protectsmetalcomponentsinthe
engine's coolingsystemfromcorrosionand
scaling.Ttalsoraisestheboilingpointofthe
coolant.
Donotreducetheconcentrationofthecool­
ant
inthesummerbyaddingplain water. The
proportionofcoolantadditivemustbeat
least50%butnotmorethan60%tomain­
tain
antifreezeprotectionandcooling efficien­
cy.Ifthecoolantfrostprotectionistoolow,
the
coolantcouldfreezeanddamagethevehi­
cle heating
andenginecoolingsystem.

Disconnecting thebattery terminaIs
Somevehiclefunctions(powerwindowregu­
lators,forexample)arelostifthebatteryter­
minalsaredisconnected.Thesefunctionshave
toberelearnedafterthebatteryterminalsare
connectedagain.Topreventthis,thebattery
shouldonly bedisconnectedfromthevehicle
electricalsystemwhenabsolutelynecessary
for repairs.
Vehicles notdriven forlong periods
Ifyouaregoingtoletyourvehiclestandfora
longtimeandnotdriveit,youshouldremern­
berthereareelectricalcomponentswhich are~
stillfunctioningandtheywilldrawenergy
fromthebatteryanddrain it,forexample,the
engine immobilizer.Topreventthis,youcan

Winter operation
During
thewintermonths,batterycapacity
tendstodecreaseastemperaturesdrop. This
isbecausemorepowerisaLsoconsumedwhile
starting,andtheheadlights,rearwindow de­
fogger,
etc.,areusedmoreoften.
Avoidunnecessarypowerconsumption,par­
ticularly
incity traffic orwhentraveling only

charged
batterywillnotonlypreventstarting
problems whentheweatheriscold,butwill

Replacing battery
Thenewbatterymusthavethesamecapaci­
ty,voltage(12volts),amperage,construction
andplugsealing,astheoriginalbattery.Spec­
ifications
arelisted onthebatteryhousing.
Batteries specially
developedbyAudifulfill
the
maintenance,output,andsafetyrequire­
ments.
When installing
thebattery,makesuretheig­
nition
andailelectricalconsumersareswitch­
edoffq(j).
Werecommendthatyou usemaintenance­
freeorcycle-resistant/leak-proofbatteries
accordingtothestandardsTL82S06(from
December
1997)andVW7SO73(fromAu­

Eachtire,includingthespare(ifprovided),
shouldbecheckedmonthlywhencoldandin­
flatedtotheinflationpressurerecommended
bythevehiclemanufactureronthevehicle
placard
ortireinflationpressurelabel.(Ifyour
vehiclehastiresofadifferentsizethanthe
sizeindicatedonthevehicleplacardortirein­
flationpressurelabel,youshoulddetermine
thepropertireinflationpressureforthose
tires.)
Asanaddedsafetyfeature,yourvehiclehas
beenequippedwithatirepressuremonitoring
system(TPMS)thatilluminatesa lowtire
pressuretelltalewhenoneormoreofyour
tiresissignificantlyunder-inflated.According­
ly,whenthelowtirepressuretelltaleillumi­
nates,youshouldstopandcheckyourtiresas
soonaspossible,andinflatethemtothe
properpressure.Drivingonasignificantlyun­
der-inflatedtirecausesthetiretooverheat
andcanleadtotirefailure.Under-inflational­
soreducesfuelefficiencyandtiretreadlife,
andmayaffectthevehicle'shandlingand
stoppingability.
PleasenotethattheTPMS isnotasubstitute
forpropertiremaintenance,anditisthedriv­
er'sresponsibilitytomaintaincorrecttire
pressure,evenifunder-inflationhasnot
reachedtheleveltotriggerilluminationofthe
TPMSlowtirepressuretelltale.
Yourvehiclehasalsobeenequippedwitha
TPMS
malfunctionindicatortoindicatewhen
thesystemisnotoperatingproperly.The
TPMSmalfunctionindicatoriscombinedwith
thelowtirepressuretelltale.Whenthesys­
temdetectsamalfunction,thetelltalewill
flashforapproximatelyoneminuteandthen
remaincontinuouslyilluminated.Thisse­
quencewillcontinueuponsubsequentvehicle
start-upsaslongasthemalfunctionexists.
Whenthemalfunctionindicatorisilluminat­
ed,thesystemmaynotbeabletodetector
signallowtirepressureasintended.TPMS
malfunctionsmayoccurfora varietyofrea­
sons,includingtheinstallationofreplace­
mentoralternatetiresorwheelsonthevehi.
