Airbagsystem
Ttisnotpossibletodefinearangeofvehicle
speedsthatwillcoyereverypossible kindand
angleofimpactthatwillalwaystriggerthe
airbags,sincethecircumstanceswillvary con­
siderably
betweenonecollisionandanother.
Importantfactorsinclude, forexample,the
nature(hardorsoft)oftheobjectwhichthe
carhits,theangleofimpact,vehiclespeed,
etc.Thefrontairbagswillalsonotinflatein
sideorrearcollisions,orinroll-overs.
Always
remember:Airbags willdeployonly
once,
andonlyincertainkindsofcollisions.
Your
safetybeltsarealwaystheretoofferpro­
tectioninthosesituationsinwhichairbags
arenotsupposedtodeploy,orwhentheyhave
alreadydeployed;forexample,whenyourve­
hicle
strikesorisstruckbyanotherafterthe
firstcollision.
This
isjustoneofthereasonswhy anairbagis
asupplementaryrestraintandisnotasubsti­
tuteforasafetybelt.Theairbagsystem
worksmosteffectivelywhenusedwiththe
safetybelts.Therefore,alwaysproperlywear
yoursafetybeltsqpage103.

Sittingtooclosetothesteeringwheelor
instrumentpanelwilldecreasetheeffec­
tivenessoftheairbagsandwillincrease
theriskofpersonalinjuryinacollision.
- Never
sitcloserthanlainches (2Scm)
tothesteeringwheelorinstrumentpan­
el.
-Ifyoucannotsitmorethanlainches
(2Scm)fromthesteeringwheel,investi­
gatewhetheradaptiveequipmentmay
be available
toheld youreachthepedals
andincreaseyourseatingdistancefrom
thesteeringwheel.
-Ifyouareunrestrained,leaningforward,
sittingsidewaysorout·ofposition inany
way,
yourriskofinjuryismuchhigher.

Eventhoughyourvehicleisequippedwithan
AdvancedAirbagSystem,makecertainthat
allchildren, especiallythose12yearsand
younger,always rideinthebackseatproperly
restrained
fortheirageandsize. Theairbag
onthepassengersidemakesthefrontseata
potentially
dangerousplace forachildtoride.
The
frontseatisnotthesafestplacefora
child
inaforward-facingchildsafetyseat.It
can beaverydangerousplaceforaninfantor
achildinarearward-facingseat.
TheAdvanced AirbagSysteminyourvehicle
has
beencertifiedtocomplywiththeRequire­
mentsofUnitedStatesFederalMotorVehicle
Safety
Standard208asapplicableatthetime
your vehiclewasmanufactured.
TheStandardrequiresthefrontairbagonthe
passengersidetobeturnedoff("sup­
pressed") ifachilduptoaboutoneyearof
agerestrainedinoneoftherear-facingorfor­
ward-facing
infantrestraintslistedinFederal
Motor Vehicle
SafetyStandard208withwhich
theAdvanced AirbagSysteminyourvehicle
was
certifjedhasbeeninstalledonthefront
passengerseat.For alistingofthechild re­
straintsthatwereusedtocertifycompliance
withtheUSSafetyStandardqpage135.
ThePASSENGER AIRBAGOFFlightinthein­
strumentpaneltellsyouwhenthefrontAd­
vanced Airbagon
thepassengersidehasbeen
turnedoffbytheelectroniccontrolunit.
Each
timeyouturnontheignition,thePAS­
SENGER AIR
BAGOFFlightwillcomeonfora
few
secondsand:
-willstayon ifthefrontpassengerseatisnot
occupied,
-willstayonifthereisasmallchildorchild
restraintonthefrontpassengerseat,
-will gooffifthefrontpassengerseatisoc­
cu pied by
anadultasregisteredbythe
weight-sensingmatqpage122,Monitor­
ing
theAdvanced AirbagSystem.
ThePASSENGER AIRBAGOFFlightcomeson
whenthecontrolunitdetectsatotalweight
onthefrontpassengerseatthatrequiresthe
frontairbagtobeturnedoff.
Ifthetotalweightonthefrontpassenger
seatismorethanthatofatypical1year-old
child
butlessthantheweightofasmall
adult,thefrontairbagonthepassengerside
candeploy(thePASSENGER AIRBAGOFF
lightdoesnotcomeon).IfthePASSENGER
AIR
BAGOFFlightdoesnotcomeon,the
frontairbagonthepassengersidehasnot
beenturnedoffbytheelectroniccontrolunit
andcandeployifthecontrolunitsensesan
impactthatmeetstheconditionsstoredinits
memory.
Forexample,theairbagmaydeployif:

year-old childisonthefrontpassengerseat
(regardlessofwhetherthechildisinoneof

Ifthefrontpassengerairbagisturnedoff,the
PASSENGER AIRBAGOFFlightcomesonin
theinstrumentclusterandstayson.
Thefrontairbagonthepassengersidemay
notdeploy(thePASSENGER AIRBAGOFF
lightdoesnotilluminateandstaylit)evenifa
smalladultorteenager,orapassengerwhois
notsittinguprightwiththeirbackagainsta
non-reclined
backrestwiththeirfeetonthe
vehiclefloorinfrontoftheseatisonthefront
passengerseatqpage94,Proper seating po­
sition for
thedriver.
Ifthefrontpassengerairbagdeploys,the
FederalStandardrequirestheairbagtomeet
the"lowrisk"deploymentcriteriatoreduce
theriskofinjurythroughinteractionwiththe
airbag."Low risk"deploymentoccursinthose
crashesthattakeplaceatlowerdecelerations~

seriously injure
thechildduring inflation.

thisreason,andbecausethebackseatis
thesafestplaceforchildren -whenproperly
restrainedaccordingtotheirageandsize-we

Theairbagsinflateonlyinfrontalimpacts
whenthevehicledecelerationishighenough.
ThefrontAdvanced AirbagSystemforthe
frontseatoccupantsisnotasubstitutefor
yoursafetybelts.Rather,itispartoftheover­
all
occupantrestraintsysteminyourvehicle.
Always
rememberthattheairbagsystemcan
only
helptoprotectyou, ifyouaresittingup­

passengersidetobeturnedoffif:

quiresthefrontairbagtobeturnedoff.Ifthe
PASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlightdoesnot
comeon,thefrontairbagonthepassenger
sidehasnotbeenturnedoffbythecontrol
unitandcandeployifthecontrolunitsenses
animpactthatmeetstheconditionsstoredin
itsmemory.
Ifthetotalweightonthefrontpassenger
seatismorethanthatofatypical1year-old,~

frontairbagonthepassengersidemaydeploy

airbagsystemcanbedeployed only
once. After
anairbaghasbeendeployed,

Repair,careanddisposaioftheairbags

Impropercare, servicingandrepair proce­

holders
ortelephonemountingstothe
surfacescoveringtheairbagunits.
- For cleaning
thehorn padorinstrument
panel,useonlyasoft,dryclothorone
moistenedwith plainwater.Solventsor
cleanerscoulddamagetheairbagcoyer
or
changethestiffnessorstrengthofthe
materialsothattheairbagcannotde­
ploy
andprotectproperly.
-Never repair,adjust,orchangeanyparts
oftheairbagsystem.
-Allworkonthesteeringwheel,instru­
mentpanel,frontseatsorelectricalsys­
tem(includingtheinstallationofaudio
equipment,cellulartelephonesandCS
radios,etc.)mustbeperformedbya
