When should the roof rack be removed?
-Before going through an automatic car wash
(it is best to ask the car wash operator for
advice).
- When not in use, to reduce fuel consump­
tion, wind noise and to guard against theft.
_& WARNING
- Use of an unapproved roof rack or incor­
rect mounting of an approved roof rack
can cause the roof rack or the items at­
tached to it to fall off the roof onto the road .
- Objects falling from the roof of a vehicle
can cause a crash and personal injury .
- Only mount the system between the
markings shown in
¢ page 61, fig. 62.
- The roof rack system must be installed
exactly according to the instructions pro­
vided.
(D Note
- Your vehicle warranty does not cover any
damages to the vehicle caused by using
roof racks or mounting structures not
approved by Audi for your vehicle. The
same applies to damage resulting from
i ncorrect roof rack installation.
- Always check the roof rack mountings
and hardware before each trip and dur­
ing a trip to make sure everything is se­
curely tightened.
If necessary, retighten
the mount ings and check the entire sys­
tem from time to time.
- After mounting a roof rack system, or
whe n you transport objects on the roof
of your vehicle, the height of the vehicle
is naturally increased. Be careful when
driving under low br idges or in parking
garages for example. This could cause
damage to the load and even the vehicle
i tself .

Installation
When installing the feet make sure that they
are pos itioned exact ly on the positioning bolts

Loading the roof rack
Always distribute the loads evenly. Make sure anything on the roof rack is securely tied
down.

The maximum permissible roof weight is
165 lb (75 kg). The roof weight is made up of
the weight of the roof rack system and the
weight of the object being transported.
When using a roof rack system which has a
lower load carrying capacity, you must not use
up the total maximum permissible load carry­
ing capacity specified above. Instead, you
should load the roof rack system only to the maximum capacity spec ified by the manufac-
turer of the roof rack system . ..,.

gravity and overall handling . Always
dr ive slow ly, avoid sudden braking and
maneuvers when transporting cargo on
the roof of your vehicle.
- Never e xceed the maximum permissib le
load carrying capacity of the roof o f your
vehicle, the perm issib le a xle weights and
the permiss ible total weight of your veh i­
cle

As a result of the increased wind resist­
ance created by a roof rack , your veh icle is
using fue l unnecessar ily. So remove the
roof rack after using it .

A WARNING
-Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident
and personal injury .
- Never carry any beverage conta iners with
hot liquids , such as hot coffee o r hot tea,
i n the vehicle while it is moving. In case
of an acc ident, sudden braking or othe r
veh icle movement, hot liquid could spill,
c a using scalding burns. Spilled hot liquid
can also cause an acci dent and personal
i njur y.
- Use o nly soft c ups in the cupholder . H ard
cups and glasses can cause injury in an
accident.
- Never use the cup hol der or adapter as an
ashtray -ris k of fire.

to it rema in functional even if the ignition
is switched off or the ignition key is re­
moved. N ever leave children inside the ve­
hicle withou t supe rv ision.

When the engine is off and accessor ies are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­

Storage
General
A WARNING
-Always remove objec ts from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when acce lerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner.
- When you are drivi ng make sure tha t
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage lo cations
cannot fa ll out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, depress th e clutch or acceler­
ate.
-Any articles of cloth ing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's v iew. The coat hooks are desig ned
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with ha rd, po inted or heavy
objects in the pocke ts on the coat hooks.
Dur ing sudden braking or in an acciden t -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
-
these objects co uld injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

Rear window defogger
The rear window defogger clears the rear win­
dow of condensation .
... Press the [iii) button c:> page 66, fig. 68 to
turn the rear window defogger on and off.
The rear window defogger works only when
the eng ine is running. The indicator light in
the button illuminates when t he rear window
defogger is turned on.
The rear window defogger is switched off au­
tomatically after 10 to 20 minutes, depend­ ing on the outside temperature.
At very low outside temperatures, the rear
window defogger can be switched on continu ­
ously by pushing the
[iii) button for more than
2 seconds. This remains stored unt il the igni­
tion is sw itched off. A rear window defogger
that was switched on also remains stored for
15 minutes after the ignition is switched off .
If the engine is restarted within these 15 mi­
nutes, the rear window defogger is act ivated
for 10 to 20 minutes, depend ing on outs ide
temperature . With a vehicle that is parked for
a short time, the rear w indow defogge r does
not need to be ma nually activated again.
@, For the sake of the environment
As soon as the rear window is clear, you
should switch the rear window defogger off.
The reduced power consumption has a
beneficial effect on fuel consumption .
Heated seats
Applies to vehicles : w ith hea ted seats
The seat cushion and the seatback of the
front seats can be heated electrically.
... Press the heated seats button I-J + I
c:> page 66, fig. 68 to set the level of heating
desired.
The range of cont ro ls goes from 1 to 3. Th e
heat setting selected is shown by LEDs above
the button.
A WARNING
-Indiv iduals with reduced sens itivity to pain
or temperature could develop burns when
using the seat heating function . To reduce
the r isk of injury, these ind ividuals should
not use seat heating.
~ Note
To avoid damage to the heating elements
in the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the
seat.

safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, a irbags, ch ild restra ints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us
priori­
ty number 1.
Always observe the info rmat ion
and warn ings in th is sect ion -fo r yo ur own
safety as well as for that of your passengers.
The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle . Some of the
feat ures desc ribed in this sec tions may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Aud i dealer.
A WARNING
- Make certain that you follow the instruc­
t ions and heed the WARNINGS in this
Manual. It is in your interest and in the
interest of your passengers .
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell
yo ur vehicle so that this important info r­
mation will a lways be ava ilable to the
dr iver and passenge rs.
- Always keep the Owner's literature handy
so that you can find i t eas ily if you have

Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
redu ce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passenge rs
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a varie ty o f fea tures
avai la bl e to he lp re duce the risk of injury in an accident
. The following is a lis ting o f just a
few of the safety features in your Audi:
- sophis tic ated s afety be lts fo r drive r and a ll
passenger sea ting pos it ions,
- safety belt pre-tensione rs,
- fro nt airbags,
- knee airbags for the front seats,
- side airbags in the front seats,
- LATCH anchorages for child restraints,

ge ther as a sys tem to he lp p rotec t you and
you r passengers in a wide range of accidents.
These features cannot wo rk as a system if
they are not always p roper ly adjusted and
properly used!

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehicle and occu­
pant safety always depends on the informed and careful driver.
For yo ur safety and the safety of you r passen­
gers,

that you are in control of the vehicle at all
times.
For detailed information on how to adjust the
driver's seat, see

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it deploys. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the knees and
the lower part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to help reduce the risk of per­
sonal injury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head if the driver's airbag in­
flates
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supple­
mental driver's airbag to protect you in a
collision.
- Always sit in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the area where the air­
bags are located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front
seats and head restraints properly and
make sure that all passengers are prop­
erly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving. Your seat may move unexpect- edly and you could lose control of the ve­
hicle .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests
are tilted back, the greater the risk of in­
jury due to incorrect positioning of the safety belt and improper seating posi ­
tion .
- Children must always ride in child seats

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving .
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position :
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upright position and your back comes in full contact with it whenever the vehicle is
moving.
• Adjust the head restraint so that the upper
edge is as even with the top of your head as
possible but not lower than eye level and so
that it is as close to the back of your head as
possible

• Keep both feet flat on the floor in front of
the front passenger seat.
• Fasten and wear safety belts correctly
c::>page 104.

A WARNING
-
Front seat passengers who are unbelted,
out of position or too close to the airbag
can be seriously injured or killed by the air­
bag as it unfolds. To help reduce the risk of
serious personal injury:

-Passengers must always sit in an upright
position and never lean against or place
any part of their body too close to the
area where the airbags are located.
- Passengers who are unbelted, out of po­
sition or too close to the airbag can be
seriously injured by an airbag as it un ­
folds with great force in the blink of an
eye .
- Always make sure that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between the front
passenger's breastbone and the instru­
ment panel.
- Always make sure that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the front pas­
senger 's knees and the lower part of the
instrument panel.
- Each passenger must always sit on a seat
of their own and properly fasten and
wear the safety belt belonging to that
seat.
- Before driving , always adjust the front
passenger seat and head restraint prop­
erly.
- Always keep your feet on the floor in
front of the seat. Never rest them on the
seat, instrument panel, out of the win­
dow, etc. The airbag system and safety
belt will not be able to protect you prop­
erly and can even increase the risk of in­
jury in a crash .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or

Proper seating positions for passengers
in rear seats
Rear seat passengers must sit upright with
both feet on the floor consistent with their
physical size and be properly restrained
whenever the vehicle is in use.
To reduce the risk of injury caused by an incor­
rect seating position in the event of a sudden
braking maneuver or an accident, your pas­
sengers on the rear bench seat must always
observe the following:
.,. Make sure that the seatback is securely
latched in the upright position¢
page 59.
.,. Keep both feet flat in the footwell in front
of the rear seat.
.,. Fasten and wear safety belts properly
¢page 104.
.,. Make sure that children are always properly
restrained in a child restraint that is appro ­
priate for their size and age¢

A WARNING
Passengers who are improperly seated on
the rear seat can be seriously injured in a
crash.
- Each passenger must always sit on a seat
of their own and properly fasten and
wear the safety belt belonging to that
seat.
- Safety belts only offer maximum protec­
tion when the seatback is securely latch­
ed in the upright position and the safety
belts are properly positioned on the
body. By not sitting upright, a rear seat
passenger increases the risk of personal
injury from improperly positioned safety
belts!

Proper adjustment of head restraints
Correctly adjusted head restraints are an im­
portant part of your vehicle's occupant re­
straint system and can help to reduce the risk of injuries in accident situations.

The head restraints must be correctly adjust­
ed to achieve the best protection.
~ For adjustable head restraints: adjust the
head restraint so the upper edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head. If that is not possible, try to adjust the head re­
straint so that it is as close to this position as possible

Driving without head restraints or with
head restraints that are not properly ad­
justed increases the risk of serious or fatal
neck injuriy dramatically. To help reduce
the risk of injury:
- Always drive with the head restra ints in
place and properly adjusted.
- Every person in the vehicle must have a
properly adjusted head restraint.
- Always make sure each person in the ve­
hicle properly adjusts their head re­
straint. Each head restraint must be ad­
justed according to occupants' size so
that the upper edge is as even w ith the
top of the person's head, but no lower
th an eye level and so it is as close to the
back of to the head as possible.
- Never attempt to adjust head restraint
wh ile driving. If you have driven
off and must adjust the driver headrest for any
reason, first stop the vehicle safely be­
fore attempting to adjust the head re­ straint .
- Ch ildren must always be properly re­
strained in a child restraint that is appro­
priate for their age and size

· Examples of improper seating positions
The occupant restraint system can only re­
duce the risk of injury if vehicle occupants are
properly seated .
Improper seating positions can cause serious
injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are properly positioned on the body . Improper seating positions reduce the
effectiveness of safety belts and will even in­
crease the risk of injury and death by moving
the safety belt to critical areas of the body.
Improper seating posi tions also increase the
risk of serious injury and death when an air­
bag deploys and strikes an occupant who is
not in the proper seating position . A dr iver is
responsible for the safety of all vehicle occu­
pants and especially for children. Therefore :
~ Never allow anyone to assume an incorrect
seating position when the vehicle is being
used

The following bullets list only some sample
positions that will increase the risk of serious
injury and death. Our hope is that these exam­
ples will make you more aware of seating po­
sitions that are dangerous.
Therefore , whenever the vehicle is
moving:
- never stand up in the vehicle
- never stand on the seats
- never kneel on the seats
- never ride with the seatback reclined
- never lie down on the rear seat
- never lean up against the instrument panel
- never s it on the edge of the seat
- never sit sideways
- never lean out the window

General notes
Always wear safety belts!
Wearing safety belts correctly saves lives!
This chapter explains why safety belts are nec­
essary, how they work and how to adjust and
wear them correctly .
.. Read all the information that follows and
heed all of the instructions and WARNINGS.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death.
- Safety belts are the single most effective
means available to reduce the risk of se­
rious injury and death in automobile acci­
dents. For your protection and that of
your passengers, always correctly wear
safety belts when the vehicle is moving.
- Pregnant women, injured, or physically
impaired persons must also use safety
belts. Like all vehicle occupants, they are
more likely to be seriously injured if they
do not wear safety belts. The best way to
protect a fetus is to protect the mother -
throughout the entire pregnancy.
Number of seats
Your Audi TT Coupe has two seating positions in the front and two height-limited seating
positions in the rear. Each seating position has
a safety belt. The rear seat area in your Audi
TT Coupe does not have enough room for pas­
sengers of all sizes. For reasons of safety, no
person taller than 4'11" (1.S meters) should
ever ride in the rear seat area.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death. -
Never strap more than one person, in­
cluding small children, into any belt.
It is
especially dangerous to place a safety belt over a child sitting on your lap.
- Never let more people ride in the vehicle
than there are safety belts available.
- Be sure everyone riding in the vehicle is
properly restrained with a separate safe­
ty belt or child restraint.
- Persons taller than 4'11" (1.5 m) as well
as children in booster seats who are too
close to the rear window and roof can
suffer severe head and neck injuries
when the rear lid is closed or in a crash .
- The minimum clearance between the passenger's heads and the rear window
must never -under any circumstances -
be less that 1 inch (2.5 cm.) when the
passengers sit fully upright.
- Always make sure that rear seat passen­
gers cannot be struck when the rear lid is
closed.
,! Safety belt warning light
Your vehicle has a warning system for the
driver and front seat passenger to remind you
about the importance of buckling-up.

Before driving off, always:
" Fasten your safety belt and make sure you
wear it properly .
.. Make sure that your passengers also buckle
up and properly wear their safety belts.
.. Protect children with a child restraint sys-
tem appropriate for the size and age.

In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed. Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occupants are not able to res ist the
tremendous fo rces of impact by holding tight
or brac ing thems elves. Without the benefit of
safety restraint systems, the unres trained o c­
cupa nt w ill slam vio lent ly into the steering
wheel, instrument panel, winds hield, or what ­
ever else is in the way

they had just before the crash.
Neve r rely on airbags a lone for p rotection .
Even when they deploy, airbags provide only
addit ional protection . Airbags are not sup ­
posed to deploy in all kinds of accidents. Al­
though your Audi is equipped with a irbags, all
vehicle occupants, including the driver, must
wear safety belts correctly in order to min i­
mize the risk of severe inju ry or death in a
crash.
Remember too, that a irbags will deploy on ly
once and that your safety belts are always there to offe
r protection in those accidents in
which airbags are not supposed to dep loy or
when they have already dep loyed . Unbelted
occupa nts can also be thrown o ut of the ve hi­
cle where even more severe or fatal injuries
can occur .
It is also important for the rear passengers to
wear safety belts correctly. Unbelted passen­
gers in the rear seats endanger not only them­
se lves but also the driver and othe r passen­
gers¢

Safety belts protect
People think it's possible to us e the hands to
brace the body in a minor collision. It 's simply
not true!

Safety be lts used p roperly can make a big dif­
fere nce. Safe ty belts help to keep passengers
in the ir seats, gradua lly reduce energy leve ls
applied to the body in an accident, and he lp
prevent the uncontrolled movement that ca n
ca use serio us inju ries . In addition, safety be lts
reduce the danger of being thrown out of the
vehicle.
S afety be lts attach passenge rs to the car and
give them the benefit of being slowed down
more gently or "softly" through the "give" in
the safety belts, crush zones and other safety
features engineered into today's vehicles. By
"absorbing" the kinetic energy over a longer
