This chapter describes all standard, country- specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Tireinflationpressure
Generalinformation
The tire characteristics and tire inflation presj
sure influence the following:'yThe service life of the tires.'yRoad safety.'yDriving comfort.'yFuel consumption.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
A tire with low or missing tire inflation
pressure impacts handling, such as steering
and braking response. There is a risk of an acj
cident. Regularly check the tire inflation presj sure, and correct it as needed, e.g., twice amonth and before a long trip.'

Maximum tire load is the maximum permissible
weight for which the tire is approved.
Locate the maximum tire load on the tire sidejwall and the Gross Axle Weight Rating m GAWR
m on the certification label on the driverss door pillar.
Divide the tire load by 1.1. It must be greater than one-half of the vehicless Gross Axle
Weight Rating m GAWR. Note, front vs. rear GAWR and tire loads, respectively.

Recommendation
Regardless of the tire tread, replace tires at
least every 6 years.

All passenger vehicle tires must conform toFederal Safety Requirements in addition to
these grades.
Treadwear The treadwear grade is a comparative ratingbased on the wear rate of the tire when testedunder controlled conditions on a specified govjernment test course. E.g., a tire graded 150
would wear one and one-half, 1 g, times as well on the government course as a tire graded
100. The relative performance of tires depends
upon the actual conditions of their use, howj ever, and may depart significantly from the
norm due to variations in driving habits, service
practices and differences in road characterisj tics and climate.
Traction
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B, and C.
Those grades represent the tire's ability to
stop on wet pavement as measured under
controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire
marked C may have poor traction performance.
The traction grade assigned to this tire is
based on straight-ahead braking traction tests,
and does not include acceleration, cornering,
hydroplaning, or peak traction characteristics.
Temperature The temperature grades are A, the highest, B,
and C, representing the tire's resistance to the
generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions
on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel.
Sustained high temperature can cause the maj
terial of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire
life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C correspondsto a level of performance which all passenger
vehicle tires must meet under the Federal Moj
tor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109. Grades
Band A represent higher levels of performanceon the laboratory test wheel than the minimum
required by law.
WARNING
The temperature grade for this tire is esj
tablished for a tire that is properly inflated and
not overloaded. Excessive speed, underinflaj
tion, or excessive loading, either separately or
in combination, can cause heat buildup and
possible tire failure.'

Minimumtreaddepth
Wear indicators are distributed around thetire's circumference and have the legally rejquired minimum height of 0.063 inj
ches/1.6 mm.
The positions of the wear indicators are marked on the tire sidewall with TWI, Tread
Wear Indicator.
Tiredamage
Generalinformation
Inspect your tires regularly for damage, foreign
objects lodged in the tread, and tread wear.
Driving over rough or damaged road surfaces,
as well as debris, curbs and other obstacles can cause serious damage to wheels, tires and
suspension parts. This is more likely to occur
with low-profile tires, which provide less cushj
ioning between the wheel and the road. Be
careful to avoid road hazards and reduce your
speed, especially if your vehicle is equipped
with low-profile tires.
Indications of tire damage or other vehicle malj functions:
'yUnusual vibrations.'yUnusual tire or running noises.'yUnusual handling such as a strong tenjdency to pull to the left or right.
Damage can be caused by the following situajtions, for instance:
'yDriving over curbs.'yRoad damage.'yTire inflation pressure too low.'yVehicle overloading.'yIncorrect tire storage.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
Damaged tires can lose tire inflation
pressure, which can lead to loss of vehicle control. There is a risk of an accident. If tiredamage is suspected while driving, immedijately reduce speed and stop. Have wheels andtires checked. For this purpose, drive carefully
to the nearest dealerss service center or anj
other qualified service center or repair shop.
Have vehicle towed or transported as
needed.'

Wheelandtirecombination
Generalinformation
You can ask the dealerss service center or anj other qualified service center or repair shop
about the correct wheel/tire combination and
wheel rim versions for the vehicle.
Incorrect wheel/tire combinations impair the
function of a variety of systems such as ABS or
DSC.
To maintain good handling and vehicle rej
sponse, use only tires with a single tread conj figuration from a single manufacturer.
Following tire damage, have the original wheel/
tire combination remounted on the vehicle as
soon as possible.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Wheels and tires which are not suitable
for your vehicle can damage parts of the vehij cle, for instance due to contact with the body
due to tolerances despite the same official size rating. There is a risk of an accident. The manjufacturer of your vehicle strongly suggests
that you use wheels and tires that have been
recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for
your vehicle type.'
