Functionallimitations
Even if driving off was not intended, the deactij
vated engine starts up automatically in the folj lowing situations:'yExcessive warming of the car's interiorwhen the air conditioning is switched on.'yThe steering wheel is turned.'ySteptronic transmission: change from sejlector lever position D to R, N or M/S.'ySteptronic transmission: change from sejlector lever position P to N, D, R or M/S.'yThe vehicle begins rolling.'yWhere there is a risk of window condensajtion when the automatic climate control isswitched on.'yVehicle battery is heavily discharged.'yExcessive cooling of the car's interior when
the heating is switched on.'yLow brake vacuum pressure; this can ocj
cur, for instance if the brake pedal is dej pressed a number of times in succession.
Activating/deactivatingthesystem

'yLED comes on: auto Start/Stop function is deactivated.
The engine is started during an automatic engine stop.The engine can only be stopped or startedvia the Start/Stop button.'yLED goes out: auto Start/Stop function isactivated.
Switchingoffthevehicleduringan

During an automatic engine stop, the vehicle
can be switched off permanently, for instance
when leaving it.
Steptronic transmission:
1.Press the Start/Stop button. The ignition is switched off. The Auto Start/Stop functionis deactivated.
Selector lever position P is engaged autoj
matically.2.Set the parking brake.
Manual transmission:
1.Press the Start/Stop button. The ignition is switched off. The Auto Start/Stop functionis deactivated.2.Shift into first gear or reverse.3.Set the parking brake.
Engine start as usual via Start/Stop button.
Automaticdeactivation
In certain situations, the Auto Start/Stop funcj
tion is deactivated automatically for safety reaj sons, for instance if no driver is detected.
Malfunction
The Auto Start/Stop function no longer switches off the engine automatically. A CheckControl message is displayed. It is possible to
continue driving. Have the system checked by a dealerss service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.

Parkingbrake
Safetyinformation WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move
and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an acj
cident. Before exiting, secure the vehicle
against rolling.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured
against rolling away, follow the following:'ySet the parking brake.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, for instance with a
wheel chock.'

Signalingbriefly
Press the lever to the resistance point and hold
it there for as long as you want the turn signal to flash.
Malfunction
Unusually rapid flashing of the indicator light indicates that a turn signal bulb has failed.
Highbeams,headlightflasher Push the lever forward or pull it backward.
'yHigh beams on, arrow 1.'yHigh beams off/headlight flasher, arrow 2.
Washer/wipersystem
Generalinformation
Do not use the wipers if the windshield is dry, as this may damage the wiper blades or causethem to become worn more quickly.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
If the wipers start moving in the folded
away state, body parts can be jammed or damj
age may occur to parts of the vehicle. There is
a risk of injury or risk of damage to property. Make sure that the vehicle is switched off
when the wipers are in the folded away state
and the wipers are folded in when switching on.'

Press the lever down.
'ySwitching off: press the lever down until it
reaches its standard position.'yBrief wipe: press the lever down from the standard position.
The lever automatically returns to its initial
position when released.
Intervalmodeorrainsensor
Concept
The rain sensor automatically controls the time between wipes depending on the intensity ofthe rainfall.
Generalinformation
The sensor is located on the windshield, dij
rectly in front of the interior mirror. Without the
rain sensor, the frequency of the wiper operaj
tion is preset.
Safetyinformation NOTE
If the rain sensor is activated, the wipers
can accidentally start moving in vehicle
washes. There is a risk of damage to property.
Deactivate the rain sensor in vehicle washes.'

washersystem
Safetyinformation WARNING
The washer fluid can freeze onto the winj
dow at low temperatures and obstruct the view. There is a risk of an accident. Only use
the washer systems, if the washer fluid cannot
freeze. Use antifreeze, if needed.'

3.Fold the wipers all the way away from the
windshield.
Foldingdownthewipers
After the wipers are folded back down, the
wiper system must be reactivated.
1.Fold the wipers back down onto the windj shield.2.Switch on the ignition.3.Push wiper lever down. Wipers return totheir resting position and are ready again
for operation.
Washerfluid
Generalinformation All washer nozzles are supplied from one resjervoir.
Use a mixture of tap water and windshield washer concentrate. If desired, a windshield
washer concentrate containing antifreeze can
be used.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain
harmful substances and are flammable. There
is a risk of fire and a risk of injury. Follow the inj
structions on the containers. Keep antifreeze
away from ignition sources. Do not refill operj
ating materials into different bottles. Store opj erating materials out of reach of children.
United States: the washer fluid mixture ratio is
regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individual states; do not exceed the allowable washer
fluid dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the
usage instructions on the washer fluid conj
tainer.
Use of BMWss Windshield Washer Concenj trate or the equivalent is recommended.'

Steptronictransmission
Concept
The Steptronic transmission combines the functions of an automatic transmission withthe possibility of manual shifting, if needed.
Safetyinformation WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move

tion.1.Press and hold the button to release the
selector lever lock.2.With the driver's safety belt fastened,
briefly push the selector lever in the dej sired direction, past a resistance point, if
needed. The selector lever automatically returns to the center position when rejleased.

Rollingorpushingthevehicle
Generalinformation
In some situations, the vehicle is to roll without
its own power for a short distance, for instance
in a vehicle wash, or be pushed.
EngagingselectorleverpositionN1.Start the engine while pressing on thebrake pedal.2.If necessary, release the parking brake.3.Depress the brake pedal.4.Touch the selector lever lock and engage
selector lever position N.5.Switch the engine off.
In this way, the ignition remains switched on, and a Check-Control message is disj
played.
The vehicle may roll.
NOTE
Selector lever position P is automatically
engaged when the ignition is switched off.
There is a risk of damage to property. Do not switch drive-ready state off in vehicle
washes.'

SportprogramM/S
Concept
The shifting points and shifting times in the Sport program are designed for a sportier drivj ing style. The transmission, for instance shiftsup later and the shifting times are shorter.
Activatingthesportprogram
Press the selector lever to the left out of selecj
tor lever position D.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instruj ment cluster, for instance S1.
The sport program of the transmission is actij
vated.
EndingtheSportprogram Push the selector lever to the right.
D is displayed in the instrument cluster.
ManualmodeM/S
Concept
Manual gear-shifting is possible in manual mode.
Activatingmanualmode1.Press the selector lever to the left out ofselector lever position D, arrow 1.2.Push the selector lever forward or pull itbackward, arrows 2.
Manual mode becomes active and the gear is
changed.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instruj
ment cluster, for instance M1.
Shifting
'yTo shift down: press the selector lever forjward.'yTo shift up: pull the selector lever rearjwards.
The transmission continues shifting automatijcally in certain situations, for instance when
speed limits are reached.

The Steptronic Sport transmission does not
automatically upshift in M/S manual mode
once the maximum speed is reached, if one of
the following conditions is met:

In addition, there is no downshifting for kickj
down.
