flation pressure and, depending on the model,
the tire temperature.
With use of the system follow further informaj
tion found under Tire inflation pressure, refer
to page 231.
Functionalrequirements The following conditions must be met for the
system; otherwise, reliable flagging of a loss of
tire inflation pressure is not assured:'yAfter a tire or wheel replacement, a reset
was performed with the correct tire inflaj
tion pressure.'yAfter the tire inflation pressure was adj
justed to a new value, a reset was perj
formed.'yWheels with TPM wheel electronics.

Messages
Generalinformation
A low tire inflation pressure may cause the
DSC Dynamic Stability Control to be switched
on.
Safetyinformation WARNING
A damaged regular tire with low or missj
ing tire inflation pressure impacts handling, such as steering and braking response. Run-flat tires can maintain limited stability. There is
a risk of an accident. Do not continue driving if the vehicle is equipped with normal tires. Foljlow the information on run-flat tires and continj
ued driving with these tires.'

pears in a Check Control message on the Conj
trol Display.
SymbolPossible causeThere is a flat tire or a major loss in
tire inflation pressure.
No reset was performed for the sysj tem. The system issues a warning
based on the tire inflation pressures
stored during the last reset.
Measure
1.Reduce your speed and stop cautiously. Avoid sudden braking and steering maneujvers.2.Check whether the vehicle is fitted with
normal tires or run-flat tires.
Run-flat tires, refer to page 243, are laj
beled with a circular symbol containing the letters RSC marked on the tire's sidewall.
Actionsintheeventofaflattire
Normaltires
1.Identify the damaged tire.
To do this, check the air pressure in all four
tires, for instance using the tire pressure gage of a flat tire kit.
If the tire inflation pressure in all four tires
is correct, the Tire Pressure Monitor may
not have been reset. In this case, perform the reset. If identification of flat tire damage is notpossible, please contact a dealerss servicecenter or another qualified service center
or repair shop.2.Repair the flat tire, e.g., with a flat tire kit or
by changing the wheel.
Use of sealant, for instance from the flat tire kit, may damage the TPM wheel electronics. In
this case, have the electronics checked and rej
placed at the next opportunity.
Run-flattires
Safetyinformation WARNING
Your vehicle handles differently with a
run-flat with no or low inflation pressure; for inj stance, your lane stability when braking is rejduced, braking distances are longer and theself-steering properties will change. There is a
risk of an accident.
Drive moderately and do not exceed a speed of 50 mph/80 km/h.'

Possibledrivingrangewitha
depressurizedtire
The possible driving range varies depending on the how the vehicle is loaded and used, e.g.,
speed, road conditions, external temperature.
The driving range may be less but may also be
more if an economical driving style is used.
If the vehicle is loaded with an average weight and used under favorable conditions, its possij
ble driving range will be up to 50 miles/80 km.
Vehiclehandlingwithdamagedtires
Vehicles driven with a damaged tire will handle
differently, potentially leading to conditions such as the following:'yGreater likelihood of swerving off course.'yLonger braking distances.'yChanged self-steering properties.
Modify your driving style. Avoid abrupt steerjing maneuvers or driving over obstacles, for inj
stance curbs or potholes.
Finaltirefailure
Vibrations or loud noises while driving can indij
cate the final failure of a tire.
Reduce speed and stop; otherwise, pieces of
the tire could come loose and cause an accij
dent.
Do not continue driving. Contact a dealerss
service center or another qualified service cenj
ter or repair shop.
Systemlimits
Temperature
The tire inflation pressure depends on the
tire's temperature.
Driving or exposure to the sun will increase the
tire's temperature, thus increasing the tire inj
flation pressure.
The tire inflation pressure is reduced when the tire temperature falls again.
These circumstances may cause a warning when temperatures fall very sharply.
Suddentirepressureloss The system cannot indicate sudden serious
tire damage caused by external circumstances.
Failuretoperformareset The system does not function properly if a rej
set has not been carried out, for instance a flat tire is reported though tire inflation pressuresare correct.
Malfunction The yellow warning light flashes and is
then illuminated continuously. A Check
Control message is displayed. It may
not be possible to identify tire pressure losses.
Examples and recommendations in the followj ing situations:'yA wheel without TPM wheel electronics is
mounted: have it checked by a dealerss
service center or another qualified service
center or repair shop as needed.'yMalfunction: have system checked by a
dealerss service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.'yThe system was unable to complete the
reset. Perform a system reset again.'yInterference caused by systems or devices
with the same radio frequency: after leavj
ing the area of the interference, the system automatically becomes active again.
DeclarationaccordingtoNHTSA/
FMVSS138TirePressureMonitoring
System
Each tire, including the spare (if provided)should be checked monthly when cold and injflated to the inflation pressure recommendedby the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicleplacard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your
vehicle has tires of a different size than the size

indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation
pressure label, you should determine the
proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.)
As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring
system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire presj
sure telltale when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when
the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you
should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper presj
sure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated
tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to
tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efj ficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the
vehicle's handling and stopping ability. Please
note that the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver's
responsibility to maintain correct tire pressure,
even if under-inflation has not reached the
level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low
tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also
been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indij
cator to indicate when the system is not operj
ating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicaj
tor is combined with the low tire pressure
telltale. When the system detects a malfuncj
tion, the telltale will flash for approximately one
minute and then remain continuously illumij
nated. This sequence will continue upon subj
sequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malj
function exists. When the malfunction indicator
is illuminated, the system may not be able to
detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.
TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of
reasons, including the installation of replacej
ment or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle
that prevent the TPMS from functioning propj
erly. Always check the TPMS malfunction tellj
tale after replacing one or more tires or wheels
on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement
or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS
to continue to function properly.FTMFlatTireMonitor
Concept
The system detects tire inflation pressure loss
on the basis of rotation speed differences bej
tween the individual wheels while driving.
In the event of a tire inflation pressure loss, the
diameter and therefore the rotational speed of
the corresponding wheel changes. The differj
ence will be detected and reported as a flat
tire.
The system does not measure the actual inflaj
tion pressure in the tires.
Functionalrequirements
The following conditions must be met for the
system; otherwise, reliable flagging of a loss of tire inflation pressure is not assured:'yAfter a tire or wheel replacement, an initialj
ization was performed with the correct tire
inflation pressure.'yAfter the tire inflation pressure was adj
justed to a new value, an initialization was performed.
Statusdisplay
The current status of the flat tire monitor canbe displayed, for instance whether the RPA isactive.

Performinginitialization
When initializing, the set tire inflation presj sures serve as reference values in order to dej
tect a flat tire. Initialization is started by conj
firming the tire inflation pressures.
Do not initialize the system when driving with
snow chains.
Via iDrive:1."My Vehicle"2."Vehicle status"3. "Flat Tire Monitor"4.Start the engine but do not drive off.5.Start the initialization with: "Perform reset"6.Drive away.
The initialization is completed while driving, which can be interrupted at any time.
The initialization automatically continues when
driving resumes.

Concept
The system can help prevent accidents. If an
accident cannot be prevented, the system will help reduce the collision speed.
The system sounds a warning before an immij
nent collision and activates brakes independj
ently, if needed.
The automatic braking intervention is done with limited force and duration.
A camera in the area of the interior mirror conj
trols the system.
The approach control warning is available even if cruise control has been deactivated.
With the vehicle approaching another vehicle
intentionally, the approach control warning and braking are delayed in order to avoid false sysj
tem reactions.
Generalinformation The system warns at two levels of an imminentdanger of collision at speeds from approx.3 mph/5 km/h. Time of warnings may vary withthe current driving situation.
Appropriate braking kicks in at speeds of up to
35 mph/60 km/h.
Detectionrange
Objects that the system can detect are taken into account.

Brake and make an evasive maneuj ver, if necessary.
Prewarning
This warning is issued, for instance when there
is the impending danger of a collision or the distance to the vehicle ahead is too small.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is a prewarning.
Acutewarningwithbrakingfunction
Acute warning is displayed in case of the immij nent danger of a collision when the vehicle apj
proaches another object at a high differential
speed.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is an acute warning. If necessary, the driver is
assisted by a minor automatic braking interj
vention in a possible risk of collision.
Acute warnings can also be triggered without
previous forewarning.
Brakingintervention
The warning prompts the driver to react. Durj
ing a warning, the maximum braking force is used. Prerequisite for the brake booster is sufj
ficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake
pedal. If there is a risk of collision, the system may assist with braking. When the vehicle is
traveling at a low speed, the vehicle may come
to a complete stop.
