The system can react not at all, too late,
incorrectly, or without justification due to the system limits. There is a risk of accidents or
risk of damage to property. Follow the informaj
tion regarding the system limits and actively

A collision is imminent if pedestrians are loj
cated within the central area. A warning is isj
sued about pedestrians who are located within the extended area only if they are moving inthe direction of the central area.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess visibility and trafj fic situation. There is a risk of an accident. Adjjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watchtraffic closely and actively intervene where apj
propriate.'

Warningwithbrakingfunction
Display
If a collision with a person detected in this way
is imminent, a warning symbol appears on the
instrument cluster and in the Head-up Display.
The red symbol is displayed and a sigj
nal sounds.
With instrument display: the red symj
bol is displayed and a signal sounds.
Intervene immediately by braking or make an
evasive maneuver.
Brakingintervention
The warning prompts the driver himself/herself
to react. During a warning, the maximum brakj
ing force is used. Prerequisite for the brake
booster is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake pedal. The system can assist with
some braking intervention if there is a risk of a collision. At low speeds vehicles may thus
come to a complete stop.
The braking intervention is executed only if vej
hicle stability has not been restricted, for inj
stance by deactivating the DSC Dynamic Staj
bility Control.
The braking intervention can be interrupted by stepping on the accelerator pedal or by acj tively moving the steering wheel.
Object detection can be restricted. Follow the limitations of the detection range and funcjtional restrictions.

LanedeparturewarningConcept
The lane departure warning alerts when the vehicle on roads with lane markings is about to
leave the lane.
Generalinformation Depending on the country version, the system
issues a warning at speeds between
35 mph/55 km/h and 45 mph/70 km/h.
When switching on the system below this
speed, a message is displayed in the instruj ment cluster.
Warnings are issued by means of a steering
wheel vibration. The time of the warning may
vary depending on the current driving situaj tion.
The system does not provide a warning if the turn signal is set before leaving the lane.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess road and traffic
safety. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic
closely and actively intervene where approprij
ate. Do not jerk the steering wheel in response
to a warning.'

Issuedwarning
Ifyouleavethelane
If you leave the lane and if a lane marking has
been detected, the steering wheel vibrates.
If the turn signal is set before changing the lane, a warning is not issued.
EndofwarningThe warning is canceled in the following situaj
tions:
'yAutomatically after approx. 3 seconds.'yWhen returning to your own lane.'yWhen braking hard.'yWhen using the turn signal.

Before you change lanes after setting the turn
signal, the system issues a warning in the sitj

The light in the exterior mirror housing flashes
and the steering wheel vibrates.

The warning stops when the turn signal is switched off, or the other vehicle leaves the
critical zone.
Briefflashing
A brief flashing of the lamp during vehicle unj
locking serves as system self-test.

'yPersonal driving style, e.g., steering behavj
ior.'yDriving conditions, e.g., length of trip.
Starting at approximately 43 mph/70 km/h, the
system is active and can display a recommenj dation to take a break.
Breakrecommendation
If the driver becomes less alert or fatigued, a
message is displayed in the Control Display
with the recommendation to take a break.
A recommendation to take a break is displayed
only once during an uninterrupted trip.
After a break, another recommendation to take
a break cannot be displayed until after approxij
mately 45 minutes.
Systemlimits
The function may be limited in the following
situations, e.g., and will either output an incorj
rect warning or no warning at all:
'yWhen the clock is set incorrectly.'yWhen the vehicle speed is mainly below about 43 mph/70 km/h.'yWith a sporty driving style, such as duringrapid acceleration or when cornering fast.'yIn active driving situations, such as when
changing lanes frequently.'yWhen the road surface is poor.'yIn the event of strong side winds.
The system is reset approx. 45 minutes after
parking the vehicle, e.g., in the case of a break during longer trips on highways.

DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem
ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during
braking.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing
active safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant When you apply the brakes rapidly, this systemautomatically produces the greatest possible
braking force boost. It reduces the braking disj
tance to a minimum during emergency stop.
This system utilizes all of the benefits provided
by the Antilock Brake System ABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal
for the duration of the emergency stop.DSCDynamicStability
Control
Concept
Within the physical limits, the system helps to
keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducj
ing engine speed and by applying brakes to
the individual wheels.
Generalinformation
DSC detects the following unstable driving conditions, for instance:'yFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'yLoss of traction of the front wheels, which
can lead to understeering.
Dynamic Traction Control DTC, refer to
page 150, is a version of the DSC where forj
ward momentum is optimized.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess the traffic situaj tion. Based on the limits of the system, it canj
not independently react to all traffic situations.
There is a risk of an accident. Adjust driving
style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic closely
and actively intervene where appropriate.'

Indicator/warninglights The indicator lamp flashes: DSC conj
trols the drive and braking forces.
The indicator lamp lights up: DSC has
malfunctioned.
DeactivatingDSC:DSCOFF
Generalinformation When DSC is deactivated, driving stability is
reduced during acceleration and when driving in curves.
To increase vehicle stability, activate DSC again as soon as possible.
DeactivatingDSC Press and hold this button but not lonjger than approx. 10 seconds, until the
indicator light for DSC OFF lights up in the inj
strument cluster and displays DSC OFF.
DSC is switched off.
The steering and, depending on the equipj
ment, suspension are tuned for sporty driving.

Indicator/warninglights When DSC is deactivated, DSC OFF is disj
played in the instrument cluster.
The indicator lamp lights up: DSC is
deactivated.
DTCDynamicTraction
Control
Concept
DTC is a version of the DSC Dynamic Stability Control where forward momentum is optij mized.
The system ensures maximum headway on
special road conditions or loose road surfaces,
for instance unplowed snowy roads, but with
somewhat limited driving stability.
When DTC is activated, the vehicle has maxij
mum traction. Driving stability is limited during
acceleration and when driving in curves.
Drive carefully.
You may find it useful to briefly activate DTC
under the following special circumstances:'yWhen driving in slush or on uncleared,
snow-covered roads.'yWhen freeing vehicle from deep snow or driving off from loose ground.'yWhen driving with snow chains.

TRACTION is displayed in the instruj
ment cluster and the indicator light for DSC OFF lights up.
