Functionallimitations The engine is not switched off automatically in
the following situations:
'yExternal temperature too low.'yThe external temperature is high and autoj
matic climate control is running.'yThe vehicle's interior has not yet been
heated or cooled to the required level.'yThe engine is not yet at operating temperj ature.'yThe wheels are at a sharp angle or the
steering wheel is being turned.'yAfter driving in reverse.'yFogging of the windows when the autoj matic climate control is switched on.'yVehicle battery is heavily discharged.'yAt higher elevations.'yThe engine compartment lid is unlocked.'yThe parking assistant is activated.'yStop-and-go traffic.'ySelector lever in selector lever position N,
M/S or R.'yUse of fuel with high ethanol content.
Startingtheengine
The engine starts automatically under the foljlowing conditions:
'ySteptronic transmission: by releasing the
brake pedal.'yManual transmission: clutch pedal is
pressed.
After the engine starts, accelerate as usual.
Safetymode
After the engine switches off automatically, it will not start again automatically if any one of the following conditions are met:
'yThe driver's safety belt is unbuckled and
the driver's door is open.'yThe hood was unlocked.
Some indicator lights light up for a varied length of time.
The engine can only be started via the Start/
Stop button.
Functionallimitations
Even if driving off was not intended, the deactij vated engine starts up automatically in the folj
lowing situations:
'yExcessive warming of the vehicle's interior

During an automatic engine stop, the vehicle
can be switched off permanently, for instance
when leaving it.
Steptronic transmission:1.Press the Start/Stop button. The ignition is switched off. The Auto Start/Stop functionis deactivated.
Selector lever position P is engaged autoj
matically.2.Set the parking brake.
Manual transmission:
1.Press the Start/Stop button. The ignition is switched off. The Auto Start/Stop functionis deactivated.2.Shift into first gear or reverse.3.Set the parking brake.
Engine start as usual via Start/Stop button.
Automaticdeactivation
In certain situations, the Auto Start/Stop funcj
tion is deactivated automatically for safety reaj sons, e.g., if no driver is detected.
Malfunction The Auto Start/Stop function no longer
switches off the engine automatically. A Check Control message is displayed. It is possible to
continue driving. Have the system checked by
a dealerss service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.
Parkingbrake Safetyinformation WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move
and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an acj
cident. Before exiting, secure the vehicle
against rolling.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, observe the following:

'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the

Signalingbriefly
Press the lever to the resistance point and hold
it there for as long as you want the turn signal to flash.
Malfunction Unusually rapid flashing of the indicator lamp
indicates that a turn signal bulb has failed.
Highbeams,headlightflasher Push the lever forward or pull it backward.'yHigh beams on, arrow 1.'yHigh beams off/headlight flasher, arrow 2.
Washer/wipersystem
Generalinformation
Do not use the wipers if the windshield is dry, as this may damage the wiper blades or causethem to become worn more quickly.
Safetyinformation WARNING
If the wipers start moving in the folded
away state, body parts can be jammed or damj age may occur to parts of the vehicle. There isa risk of injury or risk of property damage.Make sure that the vehicle is switched offwhen the wipers are in the folded away stateand the wipers are folded in when switchingon.'

'yTo switch off from normal wiper speed:
press down once.'yBrief wipe: press down once.
The lever automatically returns to its initial poj
sition when released.
Intervalmodeorrainsensor
Concept
The rain sensor automatically controls the time between wipes depending on the intensity of
the rainfall.
Generalinformation The sensor is located on the windshield, dijrectly in front of the interior mirror. Without the
rain sensor, the frequency of the wiper operaj
tion is preset.
Safetyinformation NOTE
If the rain sensor is activated, the wipers
can accidentally start moving in vehicle washes. There is a risk of property damage.Deactivate the rain sensor in vehicle washes.'

Cleaning
Pull the lever.
The system sprays washer fluid on the windj shield and activates the wipers briefly.
In addition, the headlights are cleaned at reguj lar intervals when the vehicle's lights are actijvated.
Windshieldwashernozzles
The windshield washer nozzles are automatij
cally heated while the ignition is switched on.
Fold-awaypositionofthewipers
Concept
The wipers can be folded away from the windj shield in the fold-away position.
Generalinformation
Important, e.g., when changing the wiper
blades or when folding out under frosty condij tions.
Safetyinformation WARNING
If the wipers start moving in the folded
away state, body parts can be jammed or damj
age may occur to parts of the vehicle. There is
a risk of injury or risk of property damage. Make sure that the vehicle is switched offwhen the wipers are in the folded away stateand the wipers are folded in when switchingon.'

Washerfluid
Generalinformation All washer nozzles are supplied from one resjervoir.
Use a mixture of tap water and windshield washer concentrate. If desired, a windshield
washer concentrate containing antifreeze can
be used.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain
harmful substances and are flammable. There
is a risk of fire and a risk of injury. Observe the instructions on the containers. Keep antifreeze
away from ignition sources. Do not refill operj
ating materials into different bottles. Store opj
erating materials out of reach of children.
United States: The washer fluid mixture ratio is regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individualstates; do not exceed the allowable washer
fluid dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the
usage instructions on the washer fluid conj
tainer.

A selector lever lock prevents the following
faulty operation:
'yUnintentional shifting into selector lever position R.'yUnintentional shifting from selector lever
position P into another selector lever posij
tion.1.Press and hold the button to release the
selector lever lock.2.With the driver's safety belt fastened,
briefly push the selector lever in the dej sired direction, past a resistance point, if
needed. The selector lever automaticallyreturns to the center position when rej leased.
EngagingselectorleverpositionP
Press button P.
KickdownKickdown is used to achieve maximum driving
performance.
Step on the accelerator pedal beyond the rej sistance point at the full throttle position.
SportprogramM/S
Concept
The shifting points and shifting times in the Sport program are designed for a sportier drivjing style. The transmission, for instance shifts
up later and the shifting times are shorter.

Concept
Manual gear-shifting is possible in manual mode.
Activatingmanualmode
Press the selector lever to the left out of selecj
tor lever position D, arrow 1. Next, push the sej lector lever forward or pull it backward, arjrow 2.
Manual mode becomes active and the gear is
changed.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instruj
ment cluster, for instance M1.
Shifting To shift down: press the selector lever forward.
To shift up: pull the selector lever rearwards.
The transmission continues shifting automatij cally in certain situations, for instance when
speed limits are reached.
SteptronicSporttransmission:

manualmode
The Steptronic Sport transmission does not
automatically upshift in M/S manual mode
once the maximum speed is reached, if one of
the following conditions is met:'yDSC deactivated.'yTRACTION activated.'ySPORT+ activated.
In addition, there is no downshifting for kickj
down.
With the respective transmission version, the
lowest possible gear can be selected by simulj
taneously operating the kickdown and the left
shift paddles. This is not possible by switching briefly via the shift paddles from selector leverposition D to manual mode M/S.
Endingthemanualmode Push the selector lever to the right.
D is displayed in the instrument cluster.
Shiftpaddles
Concept
The shift paddles on the steering wheel allow you to shift gears quickly while keeping both
hands on the steering wheel.
