to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.

ically switched off.
Parkinglights
Position of switch:

The vehicle is illuminated on all sides.
Do not use the parking lights for extended pej
riods; otherwise, they might drain the battery
and it would then be impossible to start the enj
gine.
Canada: when parking, switch on the one- sided roadside parking light, refer to
page 112.

Automaticheadlightcontrol Concept
The low beams are switched on and off autoj matically depending on the ambient brightj
ness, for instance in tunnels, in twilight or if there is precipitation.
Generalinformation
A blue sky with the sun low on the horizon can
cause the lights to be switched on.
When emerging from a tunnel during the day,
the low beams are not switched off immedij
ately but instead only after approx. 2 minutes.
The low beams always stay on when the fog
light is switched on.
Activating Position of switch:

The indicator light in the instrument cluster is
illuminated when the low beams are switched

Systemlimits
The automatic headlight control cannot serve
as a substitute for your personal judgment of
lighting conditions.
For example, the sensors are unable to detect
fog or hazy weather. To avoid safety risks unj
der these conditions, you should always switch
on the lights manually.
Daytimerunninglights
Generalinformation Position of switch:
, ,
The daytime running lights light up when the
ignition is switched on. After the ignition is
switched off, the parking lights light up in posij
tion
.
Activating/deactivating In some countries, daytime running lights are
mandatory, so it may not be possible to deactij
vate the daytime running lights.

AdaptiveLightControl
Concept
Adaptive Light Control is a variable headlamp control system that enables dynamic illuminaj
tion of the road surface.
Generalinformation
Depending on the steering angle and other paj rameters, the light from the headlight follows
the course of the road.
To avoid blinding oncoming traffic, the Adapj
tive Light Control does not swivel to the drivj
er's side when the vehicle is at a standstill.
Depending on the equipment version, Adapj
tive Light Control consists of one or several systems:'yCornering light, refer to page 114.
Activating
Position of switch:

Adaptive Headlight Control is active when the
engine is running.
Corneringlight In tight curves, for instance on mountainous
roads or when turning, an additional, cornering
light is switched on that lights up the inside of
the curve better when the vehicle is moving
below a certain speed.
The cornering light is automatically switched
on depending on the steering angle or the use
of turn signals.
When driving in reverse, the cornering lights
may be automatically switched on regardless of the steering angle.
Adaptiveheadlightrange
control
The adaptive headlight range control compenj
sates for acceleration and braking operations
in order not to blind the oncoming traffic and to
achieve optimum illumination of the roadway.

High-beamAssistantConcept
The high-beam Assistant detects other traffic
participants early on and automatically
switches the high beams on or off depending
on the traffic situation.
Generalinformation
The high-beam Assistant ensures that the high beams are switched on, whenever the traffic
situation allows. In the low speed range, the high beams are not switched on by the system.
The system responds to light from oncoming
traffic and traffic driving ahead of you, and to
adequate illumination, for instance in towns
and cities.
The high beams can be switched on and off at
any time as usual.
Activating/deactivating
Position of switch, depending on the vehicle
equipment:
,
Press and hold button on signal lever.
The indicator light in the instrument
cluster is illuminated when the low
beams are switched on.
The headlights are automatically switched bej tween low beams and high beams.
The blue indicator light in the instruj
ment cluster lights up when the system
switches on the high beams.
The high-beam Assistant is deactivated when manually switching the high beams on and off,
refer to page 85.
To reactivate the high-beam Assistant, press the button on the turn signal lever.
Systemlimits
The high-beam Assistant cannot serve as a substitute for the driver's personal judgment of
when to use the high beams. In situation that require this, therefore switch off manually.
The system is not fully functional in the followj ing situations, and driver intervention may be
necessary:'yIn very unfavorable weather conditions,
such as fog or heavy precipitation.'yWhen detecting poorly-lit road users such
as pedestrians, cyclists, horseback riders
and wagons; when driving close to train or ship traffic; and at animal crossings.'yIn tight curves, on hilltops or in depresj
sions, in cross traffic or half-obscured onj coming traffic on highways.'yIn poorly-lit towns and cities and in thepresence of highly reflective signs.'yWhen the windshield in front of the interior
mirror is fogged over, dirty or covered with stickers, etc.
Foglights
Frontfoglights
Concept
The front fog lights work alongside the low
beams to illuminate a wider area of the roadj
way.
Functionalrequirement
The low beams must be switched on before switching on the front fog lights.

The green indicator light lights up if
the front fog lights are switched on.
If the automatic headlight control, refer topage 113, is activated, the low beams will
come on automatically when you switch on the front fog lights.
When the high beams or headlight flasher are
activated, the front fog lights are not switched
on.
Instrumentlighting Functionalrequirement
The parking lights or low beams must be
switched on to adjust the brightness.
Settings Adjust the brightness with the
thumbwheel.

Depending on the equipment, the interior
lights, footwell lights, entry lamps, and courj tesy lamps are controlled automatically.

Front airbags help protect the driver and the front passenger by responding to frontal imj

EjectionMitigationThe head airbag system is designed as anejection mitigation countermeasure to reducethe likelihood of ejections of vehicle occupantsthrough side windows during rollovers or sideimpact events.
Kneeairbag The knee airbag supports the legs in a frontal
impact.
Protectiveaction
Airbags are not triggered in every impact situaj
tion, e.g., in less severe accidents or rear-end collisions.
Informationonoptimumeffectoftheairbags
WARNING
If the seat position is incorrect or the dej
ployment area of the airbags is impaired, the airbag system cannot provide protection as injtended and may cause additional injuries dueto triggering. There is a risk of injuries or danjger to life. Follow the information on achieving
the optimum protective effect of the airbag system.'

WARNING
Improperly executed work can lead to
failure, malfunction or unintentional triggering of the airbag system. In the case of a malfuncj
tion, the airbag system might not trigger as inj
tended in the event of an accident despite rej
spective accident severity. There is a risk of injuries or danger to life. Have the airbag sysj
tem checked, repaired, dismantled and scrapj ped by a dealerss service center or anotherqualified service center or repair shop.'
