If the upper anchorage of the safety belt is loj cated in front of the belt guide of the child seat,
move the front passenger seat carefully forward
until the best possible belt guide position is
reached.
Backrestwidth Adjustable backrest width: before installing a
child restraint system in the front passenger seat,
open the backrest width completely. Do not
change the backrest width again and do not call up a memory position.

WARNING
If the upper retaining strap is incorrectly used for the child restraint system, the protective efj fect can be reduced. There is a risk of injury.Make sure that the upper retaining strap is not
guided across sharp edges and without twistj ing to the upper retaining strap.
WARNING
If the rear backrest is not locked, the protective
effect of the child restraint system is limited or there is none. In particular situations, for injstance braking maneuvers or in case of an accijdent, the rear backrest can fold forward. There
is a risk of injuries or danger to life. Make sure
that the rear backrests are locked.
NOTE
The anchors for the upper retaining straps of
child restraint systems are only provided for
these retaining straps. When other objects are
mounted, the anchors can be damaged. There
is a risk of damage to property. Only mount
child restraint systems to the upper retaining straps.

DrivingVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country-spejcific and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that are not necessarilyavailable in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selectedoptions or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Start/Stopbutton
Concept Pressing the Start/Stop buttonswitches the ignition on or off and starts the engine.
Steptronic transmission: the enj
gine starts with the brake pedal
pressed when you press the Start/Stop button.
Manual transmission: the engine starts with the clutch pedal pressed when the Start/Stop buttonis pressed.
Ignitionon Steptronic transmission: press the Start/Stop
button, and do not press on the brake pedal at the same time.
Manual transmission: press the Start/Stop button without stepping on the clutch pedal.
All vehicle systems are ready for operation.
Most of the indicator/warning lights in the instruj ment cluster light up for a varied length of time.
To save battery power when the engine is off,
switch off the ignition and any unnecessary elecj
tronic systems/power consumers.

Steptronic transmission: press the Start/Stop button again without stepping on the brake.
Manual transmission: press the Start/Stop buttonagain without stepping on the clutch pedal.
All indicator lights in the instrument cluster go out.
To save battery power when the engine is off,
switch off the ignition and any unnecessary elecj
tronic systems/power consumers.
Safetymeasures
When switching off the ignition, the selector
lever position P is engaged automatically if the
selector lever position R, D or M/S is engaged.
The ignition is switched off automatically in thefollowing situations while the vehicle is stationaryand the engine is off:'xWhen locking the vehicle, and when the lowbeams are switched on.'xShortly before the battery is discharged comjpletely, so that the engine can still be started.'xWhen opening or closing the driver door, ifthe driver's safety belt is unbuckled and the
low beams are switched off.'xWhile the driver's safety belt is unbuckled
with driver's door open and low beams off.
The low beams switch to parking lights after
some minutes of no use.
Radio-readystate
Generalinformation In the radio-ready state, certain power consumjers remain ready for operation.
Activating With the engine running, press the Start/Stopbutton.

If the engine is not running and the ignition isswitched on: the system automatically activates
radio-ready state when the door is opened if the
lights are switched off or the daytime running lights are switched on.
The radio-ready state remains active if, for inj
stance the ignition is automatically switched off
for the following reasons:'xOpening or closing the driver's door.'xUnfastening of the driver's safety belt.'xWhen automatically switching from low beams to parking lights.
Switchingoffautomatically
The radio-ready state is switched off automatijcally in the following situations:
'xIf the ignition is switched off manually withthe Start/Stop button.'xAfter approx. 8 minutes.'xWhen the vehicle is locked using the centrallocking system.'xShortly before the battery is discharged comjpletely, so that the engine can still be started.

Safetyinformation
DANGER
If the exhaust pipe is blocked or ventilation is inj
sufficient, harmful exhaust gases can enter into the vehicle. The exhaust gases contain polluj
tants which are colorless and odorless. In enj
closed areas, exhaust gases can also accumuj
late outside of the vehicle. There is danger to
life. Keep the exhaust pipe free and ensure sufj
ficient ventilation.
WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move and
possibly roll away. There is a risk of an accident.
Before exiting, secure the vehicle against rollj
ing.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured
against rolling away, follow the following:
'xSet the parking brake.'xOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'xOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope, also secure the vehicle, for instance with awheel chock.
NOTE
In the case of repeated starting attempts or rej peated starting in quick succession, the fuel is
not burned or is inadequately burned. The cataj
lytic converter can overheat. There is a risk of
damage to property. Avoid repeated starting in quick succession.
Gasolineengine
Depending on the motorization, the full drive
power may not be available for approximately
30 seconds after starting the engine. In this case,
the vehicle will not accelerate as usual.
