cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in
Step 4.6.If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load
from your trailer will be transferred to your vej
hicle. Consult this manual to determine how this reduces the available cargo and luggageload capacity of your vehicle.
Load
The maximum load is the sum of the weight ofthe occupants and the cargo.
The greater the weight of the occupants, the less cargo that can be transported.
Stowingandsecuringcargo
'xCover sharp edges and corners on the cargo.'xHeavy cargo: stow as far forward as possible, directly behind and at the bottom of the rear
passenger seat backrests.'xVery heavy cargo: when the rear seat is not
occupied, secure each of the outer safety
belts in the opposite buckle.'xIf necessary, fold down the rear backrests to stow cargo.'xDo not stack cargo above the top edge of thebackrests.'xSmaller and lighter cargo: secure with ratchet
straps, the floor net, or draw straps.'xLarger and heavy cargo: secure with cargo
straps.
Lashingeyesinthecargo
area
There are four lashing eyes in the cargo area for
securing cargo.
Attach load securing aids, such as lashing straps,
retaining straps, draw straps or cargo nets, to the lashing eyes in the cargo area.
Floornet
To secure the cargo the floor net can also be used.
Hook the floor net into the fittings in the cargo
area floor.

Roof-mountedluggagerack
Generalinformation Roof racks are available as special accessories.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
When driving with a roof load, for instance with
roof-mounted luggage rack, the vehicle's cenj
ter of gravity is higher, which increases the risk of the vehicle tipping in critical driving situaj
tions. There is a risk of accidents or risk of damage to property. Do not deactivate DSCDynamic Stability Control when driving withroof load.
Securing
Follow the installation instructions of the roof
rack.
Roofdriprailwithflaps
The fixing points are located in the roof drip rail
above the doors.
Fold the cover outward.
Loading
Because roof-mounted luggage racks raise the vehicle's center of gravity when loaded, they
have a major effect on vehicle handling and
steering response.
Therefore, note the following when loading and
driving:'xDo not exceed the approved roof/axle loads and the approved gross vehicle weight.'xBe sure that adequate clearance is mainj
tained for tilting and opening the glass sunj
roof.'xDistribute the roof load uniformly.'xThe roof load should not extend past the loading area.'xAlways place the heaviest pieces on the botj
tom.'xSecure the roof luggage firmly, for instance
using ratchet straps.'xDo not let objects project into the opening path of the tailgate.'xDrive cautiously and avoid sudden accelerajtion and braking maneuvers. Take corners
gently.Seite 232DRIVINGTIPSLoading232

SavingfuelVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country-spejcific and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that are not necessarilyavailable in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selectedoptions or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Generalinformation
The vehicle contains advanced technologies for
the reduction of fuel consumption and emission values.
Fuel consumption depends on a number of difj ferent factors.
Carrying out certain measures, such as a moderj
ate driving style and regular maintenance, can inj fluence fuel consumption and the environmental
impact.
Removeunnecessary cargo
Additional weight increases fuel consumption.
Removeattachedparts followinguse
Remove roof-mounted luggage racks which areno longer required following use.
Attached parts on the vehicle impair the aerodyj
namics and increase the fuel consumption.
Closethewindowsand
glasssunroof
Driving with the glass sunroof and windows open
results in increased air resistance and thereby rej
duces the range.
Tires
Generalinformation Tires can affect fuel consumption in various
ways, for instance tire size may influence fuel
consumption.
Checkthetireinflationpressure
regularly
Check and, if needed, correct the tire inflation
pressure at least twice a month and before startj
ing on a long trip.
Low tire inflation pressure increases rolling rej sistance and thus raises fuel consumption and
tire wear.
Driveawayimmediately
Do not wait for the engine to warm-up while the vehicle remains stationary. Start driving rightaway, but at moderate engine speeds.
This is the quickest way of warming the cold enjgine up to operating temperature.
Lookwellaheadwhendriving
Driving smoothly and proactively reduces fuel
consumption.

Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking.By maintaining a suitable distance to the vehicledriving ahead of you.
Avoidhighenginespeeds
Driving at low engine speeds lowers fuel conj
sumption and reduces wear.
If necessary, observe the vehicle's gear shift indij
cator, refer to page 131.
Usecoasting
When approaching a red light, take your foot off the accelerator and let the vehicle coast to a halt.
For going downhill take your foot off the accelerj
ator and let the vehicle roll.
The flow of fuel is interrupted while coasting.
Switchofftheengineduringlongerstops
Switchingofftheengine
Switch off the engine during longer stops, for inj stance at traffic lights, railroad crossings or in
traffic congestion.
AutoStart/StopfunctionThe Auto Start/Stop function of the vehicle autoj
matically switches off the engine during a stop.
If the engine is switched off and then restarted
rather than leaving the engine running conj
stantly, fuel consumption and emissions are rej
duced. Savings can begin within a few seconds
of switching off the engine.
In addition, fuel consumption is also determined
by other factors, such as driving style, road conj
ditions, maintenance or environmental factors.
Switchoffanyfunctions
thatarenotcurrentlyneeded
Functions such as seat heating and the rear winj
dow defroster require a lot of energy and reduce
the range, especially in city and stop-and-go trafj fic.
Switch off these functions if they are not needed. The ECO PRO driving mode supports the enj
ergy conserving use of comfort features. These functions are automatically deactivated partially
or completely.
Havemaintenancecarried out
Have the vehicle maintained regularly to achieveoptimal vehicle efficiency and service life. BMW
recommends that maintenance work be perj
formed by a BMW dealerss service center.
For information on the BMW Maintenance Sysjtem, refer to page 274.
ECOPRO
Concept ECO PRO supports a driving style that saves onfuel consumption. For this purpose, the enginecontrol and comfort features, for instance the clijmate control output, are adjusted.
Under certain conditions the engine is automatij
cally decoupled from the transmission in the D selector lever position. The vehicle continues
traveling with the engine idling to reduce fuel
consumption. The D selector lever position rej mains engaged.
In addition, context-sensitive instructions are disj
played to assist with an optimized fuel consumpj tion driving style.
