SafetyinformationWARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move
and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an acj
cident. Before exiting, secure the vehicle
against rolling.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, observe the following:'ySet the parking brake.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, e.g., with a wheel chock.'

AutomaticHold
Concept
This system assists the driver by automatically
setting and releasing the brake, such as when
moving in stop-and-go traffic.
The vehicle is automatically held in place when
it is stationary.
On inclines, the system prevents the vehicle
from rolling backward when driving off.
Generalinformation Under the following conditions, the parking
brake is automatically engaged:'yDrive-ready state is switched off.'yThe driver's door is opened while the vehij cle is stationary.'yThe moving vehicle is brought to a standj
still using the parking brake.
Display
The indicator light changes from greento red.

The indicator lamp lights up green.
Automatic Hold is functional. After every new vehicle start, the last
selected setting is active.
AutomaticHoldholdingthevehicle
Function readiness is established and the drivj er's door is closed.
After stepping on the brake pedal, e.g., when stopping at a traffic light, the vehicle is autojmatically secured against rolling.
The indicator lamp lights up green.
Drivingaway Step on the accelerator pedal to drive off.
The brake is released automatically. The indicator light goes out.
Activatingtheparkingbrake
automatically
The parking brake is automatically set if drive-
ready state is switched off while the vehicle is being held by Automatic Hold or if the vehicleis exited.
The indicator light changes from green
to red.
The parking brake is not set automatically, if
the drive-ready state is switched off, while the vehicle is coasting to a halt. Automatic Hold is
deactivated.
Switchingfunctionreadinessoff Press button.
The LED goes out.
The indicator lamp goes out.
Automatic Hold is switched off.If the vehicle is being held by Automatic Hold, press additionally on the brake pedal, whenswitching off.
Malfunction
In the event of a failure or malfunction of the parking brake:
Secure the vehicle against rolling away, e.g.,
with a wheel chock, after existing the vehicle.
Afterapowerfailure
To reestablish parking brake functionality after
a power failure:1.Turn on standby state.2. Pull the switch while stepping on the
brake pedal or selector lever position P is set and then push.
This process may take a few seconds. Any
sounds associated with this are normal.
The indicator light is no longer illumij
nated as soon as the parking brake is ready for operation again.

Turnsignal
Turnsignalinexteriormirror When driving and during operation of the turnsignals or hazard warning system, do not foldin the exterior mirrors, so that the signal lightson the exterior mirror are easy to see.

Usingturnsignals
Press the lever past the resistance point.Tripleturnsignalactivation
Lightly tap the lever up or down.
The triple turn signal duration can be adjusted. Using iDrive:
1."My Vehicle"2."Vehicle settings"3."Lighting"4."Exterior lighting"5."One-touch turn signal"6.Select the desired setting.
The setting is stored for the driver profile curj
rently used.
Signalingbriefly Press the lever to the resistance point and hold
it there for as long as you want the turn signal to flash.
Highbeams,headlightflasher Push the lever forward or pull it backward.

Washer/wipersystem
Generalinformation
Do not use the wipers if the windshield is dry, as this may damage the wiper blades or causethem to become worn more quickly.
Safetyinformation WARNING
If the wipers start moving in the folded
away state, body parts can be jammed or damj age may occur to parts of the vehicle. There isa risk of injury or risk of property damage.Make sure that the vehicle is switched offwhen the wipers are in the folded away stateand the wipers are folded in when switchingon.'

Switchingon
Press the lever up until the desired position isreached.
'yResting position of the wipers, position 0.'yRain sensor, position 1.'yNormal wiper speed, position 2.
The wipers switch to intermittent operation
when the vehicle is stationary.'yFast wiper speed, position 3.
The wipers change to their normal speed when the vehicle comes to a standstill.
When travel is interrupted with the wiper sysj
tem switched on: when travel continues, the
wipers resume at their previous speed.
Switchingoffandbriefwipe
Press the lever down.
'ySwitching off: press the lever down until it
reaches its standard position.'yBrief wipe: press the lever down from the standard position.
The lever automatically returns to its initial
position when released.Rainsensor
Concept
The rain sensor automatically controls the time between wipes depending on the intensity of the rainfall.
Generalinformation
The sensor is located on the windshield, dij rectly in front of the interior mirror.
Safetyinformation NOTE
If the rain sensor is activated, the wipers
can accidentally start moving in vehicle washes. There is a risk of property damage.Deactivate the rain sensor in vehicle washes.'

Adjustingtherainsensorsensitivity
Turn the thumbwheel to adjust the sensitivity
of the rain sensor.
Upward: high rain sensor sensitivity.
Downward: low rains sensor sensitivity.
Windshieldwashersystem
Safetyinformation WARNING
The washer fluid can freeze onto the winj
dow at low temperatures and obstruct the view. There is a risk of an accident. Only use
the washer systems, if the washer fluid cannot
freeze. Use antifreeze, if needed.'

2.Press and hold the wiper level down, untilthe wipers stop in a close to vertical posij
tion.3.Fold the wipers all the way away from the
windshield.
Foldingdownthewipers
After the wipers are folded back down, the
wiper system must be reactivated.
1.Fold the wipers back down onto the windj shield.2.Switch on drive-ready state and press and
hold the wiper lever down again.3.Wipers return to their resting position and
are ready again for operation.
Washerfluid
Generalinformation All washer nozzles are supplied from one resjervoir.
Use a mixture of tap water and windshield washer concentrate. If desired, a windshield
washer concentrate containing antifreeze can
be used.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain
harmful substances and are flammable. There
is a risk of fire and a risk of injury. Observe the instructions on the containers. Keep antifreeze
away from ignition sources. Do not refill operj
ating materials into different bottles. Store opj
erating materials out of reach of children.
United States: The washer fluid mixture ratio is regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individualstates; do not exceed the allowable washer
fluid dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the
usage instructions on the washer fluid conj
tainer.

Concept
The shifting points and shifting times in the Sport program are designed for a sportier drivjing style. The transmission, for instance shifts
up later and the shifting times are shorter.

Concept
Manual gear-shifting is possible in manual
mode.
Activatingmanualmode
Press the selector lever to the left out of selecj
tor lever position D, arrow 1. Next, push the sej lector lever forward or pull it backward, arjrow 2.
Manual mode becomes active and the gear is
changed.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instruj
ment cluster, for instance M1.
Shifting To shift down: press the selector lever forward.
To shift up: pull the selector lever rearwards.
The transmission continues shifting automatij cally in certain situations, for instance when
speed limits are reached.
SteptronicSporttransmission:

manualmode
If driving mode SPORT, refer to page 113, is
selected, the Steptronic Sport transmission
does not automatically upshift in M/S manual
mode once the maximum speed is reached.
In addition, there is no downshifting for kickj

Concept
The shift paddles on the steering wheel allow you to shift gears quickly while keeping both hands on the steering wheel.

road speeds.

In selector lever position S, actuating a shift
paddle switches into manual mode permaj
nently.
In selector lever position D, actuating a shift paddle switches into manual mode temporaj
rily.
Switchingintoautomaticmode
In selector lever position D, after conservative
driving for a certain amount of time in manual
mode or if there has been no acceleration or
shifting of the shift paddles within a certain
amount of time, the transmission switches
back to automatic mode.
It is possible to switch into the automatic mode
