Overview
Radarsensors
The radar sensors are located in the rear bumper.
Always keep the bumper in the area of the raj
dar sensors clean and unobstructed.
Systemlimits
The system may not be fully functional in the following situations:
'yWhen a vehicle is approaching at a speed much faster than your own.'yWhen the approaching vehicle approaches
slowly.'yIn heavy fog, rain or snowfall.'yIn tight curves or on narrow lanes.'yIf the bumper is dirty or iced up, or covered with stickers.'yIf cargo protrudes.
Brakeforcedisplay
Concept
Additional brake lamps indicate emergency
braking to the traffic behind. This can reduce
the risk of a rear-end collision.
Generalinformation'yDuring normal brake application, the outer brake lights light up.'yDuring heavy brake application, the innerbrake lights additionally light up.
ActiveProtection
Concept
Active Protection prepares occupants and the vehicle for a possible accident in critical driving
or collision situations.
Generalinformation
Active Protection consists of various PreCrash functions, which can vary depending on the
equipment.
The system is used to detect certain critical
driving situations that might lead to an accij
dent. This includes the following critical driving situations:
'yEmergency stop.'ySevere understeering.'ySevere oversteering.
Certain functions of several systems can -
within the system limits - lead to Active Proj
tection triggering:
'yApproach control warning with light brakj ing function: automatic brake intervention.'yApproach control warning with light brakjing function or Night Vision with pedestrian
and animal detection: brake booster.Seite 164ControlsSafety164

Function
The system is switched on each time drive-
ready state is switched on.
After travel has begun, the system monitors
certain aspects of the driver's behavior, so that decreasing alertness or fatigue can be dejtected.
This procedure takes the following criteria into
account:'yPersonal driving style, e.g., steering behavj
ior.'yDriving conditions, e.g., length of trip.
The system is active starting from apj
prox. 43 mph/70 km/h and can display a break
recommendation in addition to the alertness assistant.
Breakrecommendation
Switchingon/off,adjusting
The Attentiveness Assistant is active automatj
ically with each switching on of drive-ready
state and can thus display a break recommenj
dation.
The break recommendation can also be switched on or off via iDrive and adjusted:
Via iDrive:
1."My Vehicle"2."Vehicle settings"3."Driver attention control"4.Select the desired setting.'y"Off": no break recommendation is
made.'y"Standard": the break recommendation
is made with a defined value.'y"Sensitive": the break recommendation
is issued earlier.Display
If the driver becomes less alert or fatigued, a
message is displayed in the Control Display
with the recommendation to take a break.
During the display, the following settings can
be selected:'y"Do not ask again"'y"Places to stop"'y"Remind me later"
The break recommendation is repeated afj
ter 20 minutes.
After a break, another recommendation to take a break cannot be displayed until after approxijmately 45 minutes.
Systemlimits
The function may be limited in the following
situations, e.g., and will either output an incorj rect warning or no warning at all:
'yWhen the clock is set incorrectly.'yWhen the vehicle speed is mainly belowabout 43 mph/70 km/h.'yWith a sporty driving style, such as duringrapid acceleration or when cornering fast.'yIn active driving situations, such as when
changing lanes frequently.'yWhen the road surface is poor.'yIn the event of strong side winds.
The system is reset approx. 45 minutes after
parking the vehicle, e.g., in the case of a break during longer trips on highways.

DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem
ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during
braking.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing
active safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant When you apply the brakes rapidly, the system
automatically produces the greatest possible
braking force boost. It reduces the braking disj
tance to a minimum during emergency stop.
This system utilizes all of the benefits provided
by ABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal
for the duration of the emergency stop.
Adaptivebrakeassistant In combination with Active Cruise Control, this
system ensures that the brakes respond even
more rapidly when braking in critical situations.Drive-offassistant
Concept
This system supports driving off on inclines.
Drivingaway1.Hold the vehicle in place with the foot
brake.2.Release the foot brake and drive off withj
out delay.
After the foot brake is released, the vehicle is held in place for approx. 2 seconds.
After the accelerator pedal is depressed, the
vehicle is held until it is driven off.
Depending on the vehicle loading, the vehicle
may roll back slightly.
DSCDynamicStability
Control
Concept Within the physical limits, the system helps to
keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducj
ing engine speed and by braking the individual
wheels.
Generalinformation
Dynamic Stability Control detects, for instance
the following unstable driving conditions:
'yFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'yLoss of traction of the front wheels, which
can lead to understeering.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system does not release from the
personal responsibility to correctly assess the
traffic situation. Based on the limits of the sysj

tem, it cannot independently react to all trafficsituations. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
the driving style to the traffic conditions. Watch
traffic closely and actively intervene in the rej
spective situations.'

xDrive
xDrive is the all-wheel-drive system of the vej
hicle. The interaction of xDrive and DSC Dyj
namic Stability Control further optimizes tracj
tion and driving dynamics. xDrive variably
distributes the driving forces to the front and
rear axles as demanded by the driving situation
and road surface.
IntegralActiveSteering
Concept
Integral Active Steering is a combination of Acj tive Steering and rear axle steering.
The system varies the steering angle of the
wheels in relation to the steering wheel movej
ment.
With strong steering movements and low
speeds, e.g., when parking, the wheel angle is
magnified, that is, the steering is more direct.
The rear axle steering acts to increase maneuj
verability by turning the rear wheels slightly in a direction opposite to the front wheels.
At higher speeds, the rear wheels are turned in
the same direction as the front wheels.
In critical driving situations, the Integral Active
Steering can stabilize the vehicle through purj
poseful steering of the rear wheels before the
driver intervenes, e.g., in case of oversteering.
Generalinformation The system offers several different tunings.Seite 169DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsControls169

ferent driving modes of the Driving Dynamics
Control, refer to page 112.
Usingsnowchains
When snow chains are in use, refer to
page 273, rear wheel steering is deactivated.
Malfunction
In the event of a malfunction, the steering
wheel must be turned further, while the vehicle responds more sensitively to steering wheelmovements in the higher speed range.
The stability-enhancing intervention may bedeactivated.
Proceed cautiously and drive defensively. Have the system checked by a dealerss service
center or another qualified service center or rej pair shop.
