Systemlimits
Generalinformation
The system cannot be activated or meaningj
fully used in certain situations.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system can react incorrectly or not
at all due to the system limits. There is a risk of
accidents or risk of property damage. Observe the information regarding the system limits
and actively intervene, if needed.'

WARNING
Due to high speeds when PDC is actij
vated, the warning can be delayed due to physical circumstances. There is a risk of injuryor risk of property damage. Avoid approaching
an object too fast. Avoid driving off fast while PDC is not yet active.'

vehicle, a signal tone sounds from the left rear
speaker.
The shorter the distance to the object, the shorter the intervals.
If the distance to a detected object is less than
approx. 10 inches/25 cm, a continuous tone is sounded.
If there are objects in front of and behind the vehicle at the same time, with a distance
smaller than approx. 10 in/25 cm, an alternatj
ing constant tone will sound.
Steptronic transmission: the intermittent tone and constant tone are switched off when theselector lever position P is engaged.
The intermittent tone is switched off after a
short time when the vehicle is stationary.
Volume
The ratio of the PDC signal tone volume to the entertainment volume can be adjusted.
Via iDrive:1."My Vehicle"2."iDrive settings"3."Tone"4."Volume settings"5."PDC"6.Set the desired value.
The setting is stored for the driver profile curj
rently used.
Visualwarning
The approach of the vehicle to an object is
shown on the Control Display. Objects that are farther away are already displayed on the Conjtrol Display before a signal sounds.
The display appears as soon as PDC is actij
vated.
The range of the sensors is represented in the
colors green, yellow and red.
Pathway lines are faded in for better estimation
of the required space.
When the image of the rearview camera is disj played, the switch can be made to PDC or to a
different view with obstacle markings as
needed:
"Rear view camera"
Crossing traffic warning, refer to page 205:
depending on the equipment, it is warned in
the PDC display against vehicles approaching
in the front or rear from the side.

function,ActivePDC
Concept
The emergency braking function of PDC inij tiates an emergency braking in case of acute
risk of collision.
Generalinformation
Due to system limits, a collision cannot be prej vented under all circumstances.

The function is available from walking speedwhile backing up or rolling backward.
A press of the accelerator pedal interrupts the braking intervention.
After emergency braking to a stop, further creeping toward an obstacle is possible. To
creep toward the obstacle, lightly press the acj
celerator pedal and release it again.
If the accelerator pedal is heavily depressed,
the vehicle drives off as usual. Manual braking
is possible at any time.
The system uses the ultrasound sensors of
PDC and parking assistant.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from the
personal responsibility to correctly assess the
traffic situation. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust the driving style to the traffic condijtions. Watch traffic and vehicle surroundingsclosely and actively intervene in the respective
situations.'

The assistance functions can be manually actijvated.'y "Parking aid lines"
Pathway lines and turning radius lines are
displayed, refer to page 189.'y "Obstacle marking"
Obstacles detected by PDC are displayed, refer to page 189, by markings.
Parkingaidlines
Pathwaylines
Pathway lines help you to estimate the space
required when parking and maneuvering on level roads.
Pathway lines depend on the steering angle
and are continuously adjusted to the steering
wheel movements.
Turningradiuslines
Turning radius lines can only be superimposed
on the camera image together with pathway
lines.
Turning radius lines show the course of the smallest possible turning radius on a level road.
Only one turning radius line is displayed after
the steering wheel is turned past a certain anj
gle.
Parkingusingpathwayandturningradius
lines1.Position the vehicle so that the red turning radius line leads to within the limits of theparking space.2.Turn the steering wheel to the point where
the green pathway line covers the correj sponding turning radius line.
Obstaclemarking
Obstacles behind the vehicle are detected bythe PDC sensors.
Obstacle markings can be faded into the image
of the rearview camera.
The colored thresholds of the obstacle markj
ings match the markings of the PDC.

is open, the camera image is displayed
hatched in gray.
Detectionofobjects
Very low obstacles as well as high, protruding objects such as ledges may not be detected by
the system.
Assistance functions also take into account
data of the PDC.
Observe, refer to page 183, the notes in the
PDC Park Distance Control chapter.
The objects displayed on the Control Display
may be closer than they appear. Do not estij
mate the distance from the objects on the disj

SurroundView
Concept
The system provides assistance in parking and
maneuvering. The area around the vehicle is
shown on the Control Display.
Generalinformation Several cameras capture the area from differjent selectable perspectives. In addition, assisjtance functions, e.g., guidelines, can be faded
into the display.
The following camera perspectives can be disj played:'yAutomatic camera perspective, refer to
page 191: the system shows the camera
perspective suitable for the respective driving situation.'yRearview camera, refer to page 191: to
represent the areas behind the vehicle.'yRight-hand and left-hand side view, refer
to page 194: for representing the areas on
the sides of the vehicle.'yCamera perspective movable via iDrive, rej fer to page 191.'yPanorama View, refer to page 194: to
present cross traffic, e.g., at junctions and
driveways, depending on the currently enj
gaged gear.
Depending on the view, the environment
around the vehicle or a part of it is depicted.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from the
personal responsibility to correctly assess the traffic situation. There is a risk of an accident.Adjust the driving style to the traffic condijtions. Watch traffic and vehicle surroundingsclosely and actively intervene in the respective
