SavingfuelVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country-spejcific and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that are not necessarilyavailable in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selectedoptions or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Generalinformation
The vehicle contains advanced technologies for
the reduction of fuel consumption and emission values.
Fuel consumption depends on a number of difj ferent factors.
Carrying out certain measures, such as a moderj
ate driving style and regular maintenance, can inj fluence fuel consumption and the environmental
impact.
Removeunnecessary cargo
Additional weight increases fuel consumption.
Removeattachedparts followinguse
Remove auxiliary mirrors, roof-mounted or rear
luggage racks which are no longer required folj
lowing use.
Attached parts on the vehicle impair the aerodyj namics and increase the fuel consumption.
Closethewindowsand
glasssunroof
Driving with the glass sunroof and windows open
results in increased air resistance and raises fuel
consumption.
Tires
Generalinformation Tires can affect fuel consumption in various
ways, for instance tire size may influence fuel
consumption.
Checkthetireinflationpressure
regularly
Check and, if needed, correct the tire inflation
pressure at least twice a month and before startj
ing on a long trip.
Low tire inflation pressure increases rolling rej
sistance and thus raises fuel consumption and
tire wear.
Driveawaywithoutdelay
Do not wait for the engine to warm-up while the vehicle remains stationary. Start driving rightaway, but at moderate engine speeds.
This is the quickest way of warming the cold enjgine up to operating temperature.
Lookwellaheadwhendriving
Driving smoothly and proactively reduces fuelconsumption.

Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking.By maintaining a suitable distance to the vehicledriving ahead of you.
Avoidhighenginespeeds
Driving at low engine speeds lowers fuel conj
sumption and reduces wear.
If necessary, observe the vehicle's gear shift indij
cator, refer to page 151.
Usecoastingconditions
When approaching a red light, take your foot off the accelerator and let the vehicle coast to a halt.
For going downhill take your foot off the accelerjator and let the vehicle roll.
The flow of fuel is interrupted while coasting.
Switchofftheengineduringlongerstops
Switchingofftheengine
Switch off the engine during longer stops, for inj
stance at traffic lights, railroad crossings or in
traffic congestion.
AutoStart/StopfunctionThe Auto Start/Stop function of the vehicle autoj
matically switches off the engine during a stop.
If the engine is switched off and then restarted
rather than leaving the engine running conj
stantly, fuel consumption and emissions are rej
duced. Savings can begin within a few seconds
of switching off the engine.
In addition, fuel consumption is also determined
by other factors, such as driving style, road conj
ditions, maintenance or environmental factors.
Switchoffanyfunctions
thatarenotcurrentlyneeded
Functions such as seat heating and the rear winj
dow defroster require a lot of energy and inj crease fuel consumption, especially in city and
stop-and-go traffic.
Switch off these functions if they are not needed. The ECO PRO driving mode supports the enj
ergy conserving use of comfort features. These functions are automatically deactivated partially
or completely.
Havemaintenancecarried out
Have the vehicle maintained regularly to achieve
optimal vehicle efficiency and service life. BMW
recommends that maintenance work be perj
formed by a BMW dealerss service center.
For information on the BMW Maintenance Sysjtem, refer to page 338.
ECOPRO
Concept ECO PRO supports a driving style that saves onfuel consumption. For this purpose, the enginecontrol and comfort features, for instance the clijmate control output, are adjusted.
Steptronic transmission: under certain conditions
the engine is automatically decoupled from the transmission in the D selector lever position. Thevehicle continues traveling with the engine idlingto reduce fuel consumption. The D selector lever
position remains engaged.
In addition, context-sensitive information, ECO
PRO tips, are displayed to assist with an optij
mized fuel consumption driving style.

Generalinformation
When ECO PRO driving mode is activated, the
display switches to a special configuration.
Some of the displays may differ from the display in the instrument cluster.
ECOPRObonusrange A modified driving style helps you
extend your driving range.
This may be displayed as the boj
nus range in the instrument clusj
ter.
The bonus range is shown in the range display.
Depending on the equipment, the blue bar segj
ments symbolize the gained range in stages.
If the bonus range appears in gray, the current
driving style is inefficient.
The display turns blue as soon as all conditions
for driving with optimized fuel efficiency are met.
The bonus range is automatically reset every
time the vehicle is refueled.Fuelconsumptiondisplay

Coasting
Concept
The function helps to conserve fuel.
To do this, under certain conditions the engine is automatically decoupled from the transmission
when selector lever position D is set. The vehicle
continues traveling with the engine idling to rej duce fuel consumption. Selector lever position D
remains engaged.
This driving condition is referred to as coasting.
As soon as you step on the brake or accelerator pedal, the engine is automatically coupled again.
Generalinformation Coasting is a component of the ECO PRO drivj
ing mode.
Coasting is automatically activated when ECO
PRO mode is called via the Driving Dynamics
Control.
A proactive driving style helps the driver to use the function often and supports the fuel-conj
serving effect of coasting.
Functionalrequirements In ECO PRO mode, this function is available in a
speed range from approximately
30 mph/50 km/h to 100 mph/160 km/h, if the folj
lowing conditions are met:

Generalinformation
Follow the fuel recommendation, refer to
page 292, prior to refueling.
In vehicles with a diesel engine, the filler neck is
designed for refueling at diesel fuel pumps.
Safetyinformation
NOTE
With a driving range of less than 30 miles/50 km the engine may no longer have
sufficient fuel. Engine functions are not enj sured anymore. There is a risk of damage to
property. Refuel promptly.
