Setting
Withastationaryvehicle Pull the switch.
The LED lights up.
The indicator light lights up red. The
parking brake is set.
Whiledriving
To use as emergency brake while driving:
Pull the switch and hold it. The vehicle brakes
hard while the switch is being pulled.
The indicator light lights up red, a signal
sounds and the brake lights light up.
A Check Control message is displayed.
If the vehicle is slowed down to a speed of apjprox. 2 mph/3 km/h the parking brake is set.
Releasing Releasingmanually1.Switch on the ignition.2. Steptronic transmission: press the
switch while the brake is pressed or selector
lever position P is set.
The LED and indicator light go out.
The parking brake is released.

For automatic release, step on the accelerator
pedal.
The LED and indicator light go out.
The parking brake is automatically released
when you step on the accelerator under the folj
lowing conditions:
'xEngine on.'xDrive mode engaged.'xDriver buckled in and doors closed.
AutomaticHold
Concept This system assists the driver by automaticallysetting and releasing the brake, such as whenmoving in stop-and-go traffic.
The vehicle is automatically held in place when it is stationary.
On uphill grades the system prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when driving offf.
Generalinformation Under the following conditions, Automatic Holdis automatically deactivated and the parking
brake is set:

'xThe engine is switched off.'xA door is opened and driver's safety belt isunbuckled while the vehicle is stationary.'xThe moving vehicle is brought to a standstill
using the parking brake.
The indicator light switches from green
to red and the letters AUTO H go out.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an accident.
Before exiting, secure the vehicle against rollj ing.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, follow the following:
'xSet the parking brake.'xOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the curb.'xOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,also secure the vehicle, for instance with a
wheel chock.
NOTE
If the vehicle is stationary, Automatic Hold enj
gages the parking brake and prevents the vehij cle from rolling in a vehicle wash. There is a risk
of damage to property. Deactivate Automatic
Hold prior to entering the vehicle wash.
WARNING
Unattended children or animals can cause the
vehicle to move and endanger themselves and
traffic, for instance due to the following actions:

Overview
Automatic Hold
Activating This function can be activated when the driver'sdoor is closed, the safety belt is fastened and the
engine is running.
Press button.
The LED and the letters AUTO H light
up.
The indicator light lights up.
Automatic Hold is activated.
Deactivating When deactivating, additionally depress the
brake pedal if the vehicle is being held by Autoj
matic Hold.
Press button again.
The LED and the letters AUTO H go
out.

Automatic Hold is deactivated.
When the parking brake is set manually, Autoj
matic Hold is deactivated automatically.
Driving Automatic Hold is activated: the vehicle is autojmatically secured against rolling after braking to a
standstill.
The indicator light lights up green.
Step on the accelerator pedal to drive off. The brake is released automatically.
The indicator light goes out.
Parking The parking brake is automatically set if the enjgine is switched off while the vehicle is beingheld by Automatic Hold.
The indicator light changes from green
to red.
The parking brake is not set if the engine
is switched off while the vehicle is coasting to a
halt. Automatic Hold is deactivated.
Automatic Hold remains activated during the enj gine stop brought about by the Auto Start/Stop
function.
Malfunction
In the event of a failure or malfunction of the
parking brake, secure the vehicle against rolling
using a wheel chock, for instance when leaving it.
Afterapowerfailure

operation1.Switch on the ignition.2. Press the switch while stepping on the
brake pedal or selector lever position P is set.It may take several seconds for the brake to be put into operation. Any sounds associated with
this are normal.
The indicator light in the instrument clusj
ter goes out as soon as the parking brake is ready for operation.

When driving and during operation of the turn signals or hazard warning system, do not fold inthe exterior mirrors, so that the signal lights on
the exterior mirror are easy to see.
Usingturnsignals
Press the lever past the resistance point.
The lever returns into its starting position after actuation. To switch off manually, slightly tap thelever to the resistance point.
Tripleturnsignalactivation Lightly tap the lever up or down.
The turn signal flashes three times.
The function can be activated or deactivated. Via iDrive:

Press the lever to the resistance point and hold it there for as long as you want the turn signal to
flash.
Malfunction
Unusually rapid flashing of the indicator light indij
cates that a turn signal bulb has failed.

Washer/wipersystem
Generalinformation
Do not use the wipers if the windshield is dry, as
this may damage the wiper blades or cause them to become worn more quickly.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
If the wipers start moving in the folded away state, body parts can be jammed or damagemay occur to parts of the vehicle. There is a risk
of injury or risk of damage to property. Make
sure that the vehicle is switched off when the wipers are in the folded away state and the wipj
ers are folded in when switching on.
NOTE
If the wipers are frozen to the windshield, the
wiper blades can be torn off and the wiper moj
tor can overheat when switching on. There is a risk of damage to property. Defrost the windj
shield prior to switching the wipers on.
Switchingon
Tap up the lever or press it past the resistance point.
'xNormal wiper speed: tap up once.'xFast wiper speed: tap up twice or tap once
beyond the resistance point.
The lever automatically returns to its initial posij tion when released.

Intervalmodeorrainsensor
Concept The rain sensor automatically controls the timebetween wipes depending on the intensity of the
rainfall.
Generalinformation
The sensor is located on the windshield, directly
in front of the interior mirror. Without the rain
sensor, the frequency of the wiper operation is preset.
Safetyinformation
NOTE
If the rain sensor is activated, the wipers can accidentally start moving in vehicle washes. There is a risk of damage to property. Deactij
vate the rain sensor in vehicle washes.
Activating/deactivating
Press the button on the wiper lever.
Wiping is started.
If the vehicle is equipped with a rain sensor: the LED in the wiper lever is illuminated.
If wipers are frozen to windshield, wiper operaj
tion is deactivated.
During trip interruption with the rain sensor
switched on: if the trip is resumed within approx.
15 minutes, the rain sensor is automatically actij
vated again.
Settingthefrequencyorsensitivity

Turn the thumbwheel to adjust the frequency or sensitivity of the rain sensor.
Up: short interval or high sensitivity of the rain
sensor.
Down: long interval or low sensitivity of the rain
sensor.

Windshieldandheadlight
washersystem
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The washer fluid can freeze onto the window at
low temperatures and obstruct the view. There
is a risk of an accident. Only use the washer
systems, if the washer fluid cannot freeze. Use
antifreeze, if needed.
NOTE
When the washer fluid reservoir is empty, the
wash pump cannot work as intended. There is a risk of damage to property. Do not use the
washer system when the washer fluid reservoir
is empty.
Cleaningthewindshield
Pull the lever.
The system sprays washer fluid on the windj shield and activates the wipers briefly.
In addition, the headlights are cleaned at regular
intervals when the vehicle's lights are switched
on.
Windshieldwashernozzles
The washer jets are automatically heated whenj
ever the ignition is switched on.
Fold-awaypositionofthewipers
Concept
The fold-out position enables the wipers to be folded away from the windshield.
Generalinformation Important, for instance when changing the wiper
blades or when folding out under frosty condij
tions.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
If the wipers start moving in the folded away state, body parts can be jammed or damagemay occur to parts of the vehicle. There is a risk
of injury or risk of damage to property. Make
sure that the vehicle is switched off when the wipers are in the folded away state and the wipj
ers are folded in when switching on.

Foldingdownthewipers
After the wipers are folded back down, the wiper
system must be reactivated.
1.Fold the wipers back down onto the windj
shield.2.Switch on the ignition.3.Push wiper lever down. Wipers return to their resting position and are ready again for operj
ation.
Washerfluid
Generalinformation
All washer nozzles are supplied from one reserj
voir.
Use a mixture of tap water and windshield washer concentrate. If desired, a windshield
washer concentrate containing antifreeze can be used.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain harmful substances and are flammable. There is a riskof fire and a risk of injury. Follow the instrucj
tions on the containers. Keep antifreeze away from ignition sources. Do not refill operating
materials into different bottles. Store operating
materials out of reach of children.
United States: the washer fluid mixture ratio is
regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individual
states; do not exceed the allowable washer fluid
dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the usage
instructions on the washer fluid container.
Use of BMWss Windshield Washer Concentrate
or the equivalent is recommended.
WARNING
Washer fluid can ignite and catch fire on conj
tact with hot engine parts. There is a risk of inj
jury or risk of damage to property. Only add
washer fluid when the engine is cooled down.
Next, fully close the lid of the washer fluid resj
ervoir.
NOTE
Silicon-containing additives in the washer fluid for the water-repelling effect on the windows can lead to damage to the washing system.
There is a risk of damage to property. Do not add silicon-containing additives to the washerfluid.

In this way, the ignition remains switched on,
and a Check-Control message is displayed.
The vehicle may roll.
NOTE
Selector lever position P is automatically enj
gaged when the ignition is switched off. There is a risk of damage to property. Do not switch
drive-ready state off in vehicle washes.
Irrespective of the ignition, the selector lever poj
sition P is automatically engaged after approx.
15 minutes.
If there is a malfunction, you may not be able to
change the selector lever position.
Electronically unlock the transmission lock, if
needed, refer to page 111.
Kickdown Kickdown is used to achieve maximum driving
performance.
Step on the accelerator pedal beyond the resistj ance point at the full throttle position.
SportprogramM/S Concept
The shifting points and shifting times in the
Sport program are designed for a sportier driving style. The transmission, for instance shifts up
later and the shifting times are shorter.
Activatingthesportprogram
Press the selector lever to the left out of selector lever position D.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instrument
cluster, for instance S1.
The sport program of the transmission is actij vated.
EndingtheSportprogram Push the selector lever to the right.

Manual gear-shifting is possible in manual mode.

1.Press the selector lever to the left out of sej
