Displayvisibility The visibility of the displays in the Head-up Disjplay is influenced by the following factors:
'xCertain sitting positions.'xObjects on the cover of the Head-up Display.'xSunglasses with certain polarization filters.'xWet roads.'xUnfavorable light conditions.
If the image is distorted, have the basic settings
checked by a dealerss service center or another
qualified service center or repair shop.

The shape of the windshield makes it possible todisplay a precise image.
A film in the windshield prevents double images
from being displayed.
For this reason, it is strongly suggested to have
the special windshield replaced by a dealerss
service center or another qualified service center or repair shop, if necessary.Seite 134CONTROLSDisplays134

LightsVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country-spejcific and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that are not necessarilyavailable in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selectedoptions or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Overview

Parkinglights,lowbeams
androadsideparkinglights
Generalinformation Position of switch:
, ,
If the driver's door is opened when the ignition is
switched off, the exterior lighting is automatically
switched off.
Parkinglights
Position of switch:

The vehicle is illuminated on all sides.
Do not use the parking lights for extended perij
ods; otherwise, they might drain the battery and it would then be impossible to start the engine.
When parking, switch on the one-sided roadside
parking light, refer to page 136.
Lowbeams
Position of switch:

The low beams light up when the ignition is
switched on.

Welcomelights
Generalinformation Depending on the vehicle equipment and the
ambient brightness, individual light functions may
be switched on briefly when the vehicle is unj
locked.

Headlightcourtesydelayfeature
Generalinformation The low beams stay lit for a short while after the
radio-ready state is switched off if the lights are
switched off and the headlight flasher is switched on.
Settingtheduration Via iDrive:
1."Settings"2."Lighting"3."Pathway lighting:"4.Set length of time.

rently used.
Automaticheadlight control
Concept
The low beams are switched on and off automatj ically depending on the ambient brightness, for
instance in tunnels, in twilight or if there is prej
cipitation.
Generalinformation
A blue sky with the sun low on the horizon can
cause the lights to be switched on.
When emerging from a tunnel during the day, the
low beams are not switched off immediately but instead only after approx. 2 minutes.
The low beams always stay on when the fog light is switched on.

The indicator light in the instrument cluster is iljluminated when the low beams are switched on.
Systemlimits
The automatic headlight control cannot serve as
a substitute for your personal judgment of lightj ing conditions.
For example, the sensors are unable to detect
fog or hazy weather. To avoid safety risks under these conditions, you should always switch onthe lights manually.
Daytimerunninglights
Generalinformation Position of switch:
, ,
The daytime running lights light up when the igj nition is switched on. After the ignition is
switched off, the parking lights light up in posij
tion
.
Activating/deactivating In some countries, daytime running lights are
mandatory, so it may not be possible to deactij vate the daytime running lights.
Via iDrive:

The setting is stored for the driver profile curj
rently used.
Adaptivelightfunctions
Concept
Adaptive light functions enable dynamic illuminaj
tion of the roadway.
Generalinformation
The adaptive light functions may consist of onesystem or multiple systems, depending on the
equipment version:'xAdaptive Light Control, refer to page 137.'xCornering light, refer to page 137.
Activating
Position of switch:

The adaptive light functions are active when the
engine is running.
AdaptiveLightControl Depending on the steering angle and other pajrameters, the light from the headlight follows thecourse of the road.
To avoid blinding oncoming traffic, the Adaptive Light Control does not swivel to the opposite
lane when the vehicle is at a standstill.
Corneringlight In tight curves, for instance on mountainousroads or when turning, an additional, corneringlight is switched on that lights up the inside ofthe curve better when the vehicle is moving bejlow a certain speed.
The cornering light is automatically switched on
depending on the steering angle or the use of turn signals.
When driving in reverse, the cornering lights may be automatically switched on regardless of the
steering angle.
Adaptiveheadlightrange control
The adaptive headlight range control compenj
sates for acceleration and braking operations in order not to blind the oncoming traffic and toachieve optimum illumination of the roadway.

High-beamAssistant
Concept
The high-beam Assistant detects other traffic
participants early on and automatically switches the high beams on or off depending on the traffic
situation.
Generalinformation The high-beam Assistant ensures that the high
beams are switched on, whenever the traffic sitj
uation allows. In the low speed range, the high
beams are not switched on by the system.
The system responds to light from oncoming
traffic and traffic driving ahead of you, and to amj bient lighting, for instance in towns and cities.
The high beams can be switched on and off
manually at any time.
Activating/deactivating
Position of switch, depending on the vehicle
equipment:
,
Press and hold button on signal lever.
The indicator light in the instrument clusjter is illuminated when the low beams are
switched on.
The headlights are automatically switched bej tween low beams and high beams.
The blue indicator light in the instrument
cluster lights up when the system switches on the high beams.
The high-beam Assistant is deactivated when
manually switching the high beams on and off, refer to page 104.
To reactivate the high-beam Assistant, press the button on the turn signal lever.
Systemlimits The high-beam Assistant cannot serve as a subjstitute for the driver's personal judgment of whento use the high beams. In situation that require
this, therefore switch off manually.
The system is not fully functional in the following situations, and driver intervention may be necesj
sary:'xIn very unfavorable weather conditions, such
as fog or heavy precipitation.'xWhen detecting poorly-lit road users such as
pedestrians, cyclists, horseback riders and wagons; when driving close to train or shiptraffic; and at animal crossings.'xIn tight curves, on hilltops or in depressions,in cross traffic or half-obscured oncoming
traffic on highways.'xIn poorly-lit towns and cities and in the presj
ence of highly reflective signs.'xWhen the windshield in front of the interior
mirror is fogged over, dirty or covered with
stickers, etc.
Foglights
Frontfoglights
Concept
The front fog lights work alongside the low
beams to illuminate a wider area of the roadway.
Functionalrequirement The parking lights or the low beams must beswitched on before switching on the front foglights.

front fog lights are switched on.
If the automatic headlight control, refer to
page 136, is activated, the low beams will come
on automatically when you switch on the front fog lights.
When the high beams or headlight flasher are
activated, the front fog lights are not switched on.
Instrumentlighting
Functionalrequirement
The parking lights or low beams must be
switched on to adjust the brightness.
Settings Adjust the brightness with thethumbwheel.
Interiorlights
Generalinformation
Depending on the equipment, the interior lights,
footwell lights, entry lights, and courtesy lights
are controlled automatically.

Front airbags help protect the driver and the
front passenger by responding to frontal impacts in which safety belts alone would not provide adjequate protection.Sideairbag
