NightVisionwithPedestrianandAnimal Detection
Concept
Night Vision with pedestrian and animal detecj
tion is a night vision system.
An infrared camera scans the area in front of the
vehicle and issues a warning if it detects pedesj trians and animals on the street. Warm objects
that are similar in shape to human beings or anij mals are detected by the system. If necessary,
the thermal image can be displayed on the Conj
trol Display.
Thermalimage
The image shows the heat radiated by objects in
the field of view of the camera.
Warm objects have a light appearance and cold
objects a dark appearance.
The ability to detect an object depends on the temperature difference between the object and
the background and on the level of heat radiation
emitted by the object. Objects that are similar in
temperature to the environment or that radiate
very little heat are difficult to detect.
For safety reasons, when driving at speeds above approx. 3 mph/5 km/h and in low ambientlight, the image is only displayed when the low
beams are switched on.
A still image is displayed at regular intervals for a
fraction of a second.
Pedestrianandanimaldetection
Object detection and object warning only funcj tion in darkness.
Objects whose form is similar to people with sufj
ficient heat radiation are detected.
In addition, the system also detects animals above a certain minimum size, for instance deer.
Display on the Control Display with thermal imj
age activated:
'xPeople detected by the system: in light yelj low.'xAnimals detected by the system: in dark yelj
low.
Range of object detection, with good ambient
conditions:
'xPedestrian detection: up to approx.
330 ft/100 m'xDetection of large animals: up to approx. 490 ft/150 m'xDetection of medium animals: up to approx.230 ft/70 m
Environmental influences can limit the availability
of object detection.
If the vehicle systems detect that the vehicle is
located in a residential area, the animal detection
is temporarily switched off.

ActiveBlindSpotDetection
Concept
Active Blind Spot Detection detects vehicles in the blind spot or vehicles approaching from bej
hind in the adjacent lane. A warning is issued in
various gradations in these situations.
Generalinformation
Two radar sensors in the rear bumper monitorthe area behind and next to the vehicle at speedsabove approx. 30 mph/50 km/h.
The system indicates whether there are vehicles
in the blind spot, arrow 1, or approaching from
behind in the adjacent lane, arrow 2.
The light in the exterior mirror housing is dimj
med.
Before you change lanes after setting the turn
signal, the system issues a warning in the situaj

brake lights light up.'xDuring heavy brake application, the inner
brake lights additionally light up.
ActiveProtection
Generalinformation
The Active Protection safety package consists ofsystems that are independent of each other:
'xAlertness assistant.'xPreCrash.'xPostCrash.
Alertnessassistant
Concept
The system can detect decreasing alertness or
fatigue of the driver during long, monotonous
trips, for instance on highways. In this situation, it
is recommended that the driver takes a break.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the
driverss personal judgment in assessing one's physical state. An increasing lack of alertness or
fatigue may not be detected or not be detected in time. There is a risk of an accident. Make
sure that the driver is rested and alert. Adjust driving style to traffic conditions.
Function
The system is switched on each time the engine
is started and cannot be switched off.
After travel has begun, the system monitors cerj
tain aspects of the driver's behavior, so that dej
creasing alertness or fatigue can be detected.
This procedure takes the following criteria into
account:
'xPersonal driving style, for instance steering behavior.'xDriving conditions, for instance length of trip.
Starting at approximately 43 mph/70 km/h, the
system is active and can display a recommendaj tion to take a break.
Breakrecommendation If the driver becomes less alert or fatigued, a
message is displayed in the Control Display with
the recommendation to take a break.
A recommendation to take a break is displayed only once during an uninterrupted trip.
After a break, another recommendation to take a
break cannot be displayed until after approxij mately 45 minutes.
Systemlimits The function may be limited in the following sitj
uations, for instance and will either output an inj correct warning or no warning at all:
'xWhen the clock is set incorrectly.Seite 168CONTROLSSafety168
Online Edition for Part no. 01402988494 - II/18

'xWhen the vehicle speed is mainly below
about 43 mph/70 km/h.'xWith a sporty driving style, such as during
rapid acceleration or when cornering fast.'xIn active driving situations, such as when
changing lanes frequently.'xWhen the road surface is poor.'xIn the event of strong side winds.
The system is reset approx. 45 minutes after parking the vehicle, for instance in the case of a
break during longer trips on highways.
PreCrash Concept
With this system critical driving situations that might result in an accident can be detectedabove a speed of approx. 20 mph/30 km/h. Inthese situations, preventive measures are autoj
matically taken to minimize the risk of an accij
dent as much as possible.
Critical driving situations may include: Emergency stop.
If the vehicle includes the approach control warnj ing or approach control warning with light braking
function, impending collisions with vehicles drivj ing ahead or stopped in front of you can also be
detected within the system's range.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the driverss personal judgment. Due to the system
limits, critical situation could not be detected reliably or in time. There is a risk of an accident.
Adjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watch
traffic closely and actively intervene where apj propriate.
Function
After the safety belt is buckled, the front safety
belts are automatically tightened once after the
vehicle drove off.
In critical driving situations, the following individj ual functions become active as needed:'xThe front safety belts are automatically prej tensioned.'xAutomatic closing of the windows.'xAutomatic Positioning of the backrest for thefront passenger seat.
After a critical driving situation without an accijdent, the front safety belts are loosened again.
All other systems can be restored to the desired
setting.
If the belt tension does not loosen automatically,
stop the vehicle and unbuckle the safety belt usj ing the red button in the buckle. Fasten the
safety belt before continuing on your trip.
PostCrash
Concept In the event of an accident, the system can bring
the vehicle to a halt automatically without interj
vention by the driver in certain situations. This
can reduce the risk of a further collision and the
consequences thereof.
Hardervehiclebraking It can be necessary to bring the vehicle in certainsituations to a halt quicker.
To do this, for a short time the braking pressure
applied when stepping on the brake pedal must be higher than the braking pressure achieved by
the automatic braking function. This interrupts
automatic braking.
Interruptingautomaticbraking It can be necessary to interrupt automatic brakj
ing in certain situations, for example for an evaj
sive maneuver.
Interrupt automatic braking:
