DisplayvisibilityThe visibility of the displays in the Head-up
Display is influenced by the following factors:'yCertain sitting positions.'yObjects on the cover of the Head-up Disj
play.'ySunglasses with certain polarization filters.'yWet roads.'yUnfavorable light conditions.
If the image is distorted, have the basic setj tings checked by a dealerss service center or
another qualified service center or repair shop.
Follow the instructions for cleaning the Head- up Display, refer to page 247.
Specialwindshield The windshield is part of the system.
The shape of the windshield makes it possible
to display a precise image.
A film in the windshield prevents double imj
ages from being displayed.
For this reason, it is strongly suggested to have the special windshield replaced by a dealj
erss service center or another qualified service
center or repair shop, if necessary.

to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.

Parkinglights Position of switch:

The vehicle is illuminated on all sides.
Do not use the parking lights for extended pej
riods; otherwise, they might drain the battery
and it would then be impossible to start the enj
gine.
When parking, switch on the one-sided roadj
side parking lamp, refer to page 102.

Automaticheadlightcontrol Concept
The low beams are switched on and off autoj matically depending on the ambient brightj
ness, for instance in tunnels, in twilight or if there is precipitation.
Generalinformation
A blue sky with the sun low on the horizon can
cause the lights to be switched on.
When emerging from a tunnel during the day,
the low beams are not switched off immedij
ately but instead only after approx. 2 minutes.
The low beams always stay on when the fog
light is switched on.

Systemlimits
The automatic headlight control cannot serve
as a substitute for your personal judgment of
lighting conditions.
For example, the sensors are unable to detect
fog or hazy weather. To avoid safety risks unj
der these conditions, you should always switch
on the lights manually.
Daytimerunninglights
Generalinformation Position of switch:
, ,
The daytime running lights light up when the
ignition is switched on. After the ignition is
switched off, the parking lights light up in posij
tion
.
Activating/deactivating In some countries, daytime running lights are
mandatory, so it may not be possible to deactij
vate the daytime running lights.

AdaptiveLightControl TheconceptAdaptive Light Control is a variable headlight
control system that enables dynamic illuminaj
tion of the road surface.
Generalinformation
Depending on the steering angle and other paj
rameters, the light from the headlight follows the course of the road.
To avoid blinding oncoming traffic, the Adapj
tive Light Control does not swivel to the drivj er's side when the vehicle is at a standstill.
Depending on the equipment version, Adapj
tive Light Control consists of one or several systems:'yCornering light, refer to page 104.

switched on.
Corneringlight
In tight curves, for instance on mountainous
roads or when turning, a cornering light is switched on up to a certain speed. As a resultthe inside of the curve is better lighted.
The cornering light is automatically switched
on depending on the steering angle or the use
of turn signals.
When driving in reverse, the cornering lights
may be automatically switched on regardless of the steering angle.
Malfunction
A Check Control message is displayed.
Adaptive Light Control is malfunctioning or has
failed. Have the system immediately checked
by a dealerss service center or another qualij
fied service center or repair shop.
Self-levelingheadlights
The self-leveling headlights compensate for
acceleration and braking operations in order not to blind the oncoming traffic and to achieveoptimum illumination of the roadway.

High-beamAssistantTheconcept
The high-beam Assistant detects other traffic participants early on and automaticallyswitches the high beams on or off depending
on the traffic situation. The assistant ensures that the high beams are switched on, whenjever the traffic situation allows. In the low
speed range, the high beams are not switched
on by the system.
Generalinformation
The system responds to light from oncoming
traffic and traffic driving ahead of you, and to adequate illumination, for instance in townsand cities.
The high beams can be switched on and off at any time as usual.
Activating/deactivating1.Depending on the equipment, turn the light switch into position
or .
2.Press button on the turn signal lever, arjrow.
The indicator light in the instrument
cluster is illuminated when the low
beams are switched on.
The headlights are automatically switched bej tween low beams and high beams.
The blue indicator light in the instruj
ment cluster lights up when the system
switches on the high beams.
The high-beam Assistant is deactivated when manually switching the high beams on and off,
refer to page 72. To reactivate the high-beam
Assistant, press the button on the turn signal
lever.
Systemlimits
The high-beam Assistant cannot serve as a
substitute for the driver's personal judgment of
when to use the high beams. Therefore, manj
ually switch off the high beams in situations
where required to avoid a safety risk.
The system is not fully functional in the followj ing situations, and driver intervention may be
necessary:'yIn very unfavorable weather conditions,
such as fog or heavy precipitation.'yWhen detecting poorly-lit road users such
as pedestrians, cyclists, horseback riders
and wagons; when driving close to train or ship traffic; and at animal crossings.'yIn tight curves, on hilltops or in depresj
sions, in cross traffic or half-obscured onj coming traffic on highways.'yIn poorly-lit towns and cities and in thepresence of highly reflective signs.'yWhen the windshield in front of the interior
mirror is fogged over, dirty or covered with stickers, etc.

If the automatic headlight control, refer topage 103, is activated, the low beams will
come on automatically when you switch on the front fog lights.
When the high beams or headlight flasher are
activated, the front fog lights are not switched
on.
Instrumentlighting Settings The parking lights or low beams
must be switched on to adjust
the brightness.
Adjust the brightness with the

Airbags

Front airbags help protect the driver and the front passenger by responding to frontal imj
pacts in which safety belts alone would not
provide adequate protection.Sideairbag

side of the body in the chest and lap area.

Protectiveaction
Airbags are not triggered in every impact situaj
tion, e.g., in less severe accidents or rear-end collisions.

WARNING
If the seat position is incorrect or the dej
ployment area of the airbags is impaired, the airbag system cannot provide protection as injtended and may cause additional injuries dueto triggering. There is a risk of injuries or danjger to life. Follow the information on optimumprotective effect of the airbag system.'

tem checked, repaired, dismantled and scrapj ped by a dealerss service center or anotherqualified service center or repair shop.'

The lamp indicates whether the airbags are eij
ther activated or deactivated.'yThe indicator lamp lights up
when a child is properly
seated in a child restraint fixj
ing system or when the seat
is empty. The airbags on the
front passenger side are not
activated.'yThe indicator lamp does not light up when, e.g., a correctly seated person of sufficient
size is detected on the seat. The airbags
on the front passenger side are activated.
Detectedchildrestraintsystems
The system generally detects children seated in a child restraint system, particularly in child
restraint systems required by NHTSA at the
point in time when the vehicle was manufacj
tured. After installing a child restraint system,
make sure that the indicator light for the front-
seat passenger airbags lights up. This indij
cates that the child restraint system has been detected and the front-seat passenger airbags
are not activated.
Strengthofthedriver'sandfront-seat
passengerairbag
The explosive power that activates driver's/
front passenger's airbags very much depends on the positions of the driver's/front passengjer's seat.
To maintain the accuracy of this function over the long term, calibrate the front seats as soonas a respective message appears on the Conj
trol Display.
Calibratingthefrontseats WARNING
There is a risk of jamming when moving
the seats. There is a risk of injury or risk of property damage. Make sure that the area ofmovement of the seat is clear prior to any adjjustment.'
