Foldingdownthewipers
After the wipers are folded back down, the
wiper system must be reactivated.
1.Switch on drive-ready state and press and
hold the wiper lever down again.2.Wipers return to their resting position and
are ready again for operation.
Washerfluid
Generalinformation All washer nozzles are supplied from one res#jervoir.
Use a mixture of tap water, windshield washer
concentrate, and possibly antifreeze for the
windshield washer system.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain
harmful substances and are flammable. There
is a risk of fire and a risk of injury. Observe the instructions on the containers. Keep antifreezeaway from ignition sources. Do not refill oper#j
ating materials into different bottles. Store op#j
erating materials out of reach of children.
United States: The washer fluid mixture ratio is regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individualstates; do not exceed the allowable washer
fluid dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the
usage instructions on the washer fluid con#j
tainer.
Use of BMW#ss Windshield Washer Concen#j trate or the equivalent is recommended.'

To prevent the vehicle from creeping after you
select a drive mode, maintain pressure on the
brake pedal until you are ready to start.
Functionalrequirements Only when the engine is running and the brake
pedal is depressed is it possible to change
from selector lever position P to another selec#j
tor lever position.

A selector lever lock prevents the following
faulty operation:'yUnintentional shifting into selector lever position R.'yUnintentional shifting from selector lever
position P into another selector lever posi#j
tion.1.Press and hold the button to release the
selector lever lock.2.With the driver's safety belt fastened, tap
the selector lever in the desired direction,
beyond a resistance point, if needed. Theselector lever automatically returns to the center position when released.

KickdownKickdown is used to achieve maximum driving
performance.
Step on the accelerator pedal beyond the re#j sistance point at the full throttle position.

Concept
The shifting points and shifting times in the Sport program are designed for a sportier driv#jing style. The transmission, e.g., shifts up later

Concept
Manual gear-shifting is possible in manual mode.
Activatingmanualmode
Press the selector lever to the left out of selec#j
tor lever position D, arrow 1. Next, push the se#j lector lever forward or pull it backward, ar#jrow 2.
Manual mode becomes active and the gear is
changed.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instru#j
ment cluster, e.g., M1.
The transmission continues shifting automati#j cally in certain situations, e.g., when speed lim#j
its are reached.

If driving mode SPORT, refer to page 117, is
selected, the Steptronic Sport transmission
does not automatically upshift in M/S manual mode once the maximum speed is reached.

The shift paddles on the steering wheel allow you to shift gears quickly while keeping both hands on the steering wheel.

Switchingintoautomaticmode
In selector lever position D, after conservative
driving for a certain amount of time in manual
mode or if there has been no acceleration or shifting of the shift paddles within a certain
amount of time, the transmission switches
back to automatic mode.
It is possible to switch into the automatic mode
as follows:'yPull and hold right shift paddle.'yIn addition to the briefly pulled right shift paddle, briefly pull the left shift paddle.
SteptronicSporttransmission
With the respective transmission version, the
lowest possible gear can be selected by simul#j
taneously operating the kickdown and the left
shift paddles. This is not possible, when switching briefly via the shift paddles from se#j
lector lever position D into manual mode.

'yTo shift up: briefly pull right shift paddle.'yTo shift down: briefly pull left shift paddle.'yThe lowest possible gear can be selected
by pulling and holding the left shift paddle.
The selected gear is briefly displayed in the in#j
strument cluster, followed by the current gear.

Electronicunlockingofthe transmissionlock
Generalinformation
Electronically unlock the transmission lock to maneuver vehicle from a danger area.
Unlocking is possible, if the starter can spin the
engine.
Before unlocking the transmission lock, set the
parking brake to prevent the vehicle from roll#j
ing away.
EngagingselectorleverpositionN1.Press and hold down brake pedal.2.Press the Start/Stop button. The starter
must audibly start. Hold the Start/Stop but#j
ton pressed.3.Use your free hand and press the button
on the selector lever, see arrow 1, and press and hold the selector lever into se#j
lector lever position N, see arrow N, until
selector lever position N is displayed in the
instrument cluster.

LaunchControl
Concept
Launch Control enables optimum acceleration on surfaces with good traction under dry sur#jrounding conditions.
Generalinformation
The use of Launch Control causes premature
component wear since this function represents a very heavy load for the vehicle.
Do not use Launch Control during the break-in, refer to page 248, period.
Do not steer the steering wheel when driving off with Launch Control.
Functionalrequirements
Launch Control is available when the engine is warmed up, that is, after uninterrupted drivingof at least 6 miles/10 km.
Startwithlaunchcontrol
1.Switch on drive-ready state.2. Press button.
TRACTION is displayed in the instrument
cluster and the indicator lamp for DSC OFF
lights up.3.Engage selector lever position S.4.With the left foot, forcefully press down on
the brake.5.Press and hold down the accelerator pedal
beyond the resistance point at the full
throttle position, kickdown.A flag symbol is displayed in the instru#j
ment cluster.6.The starting engine speed adjusts. Within
3 seconds, release the brake.
Repeateduseduringatrip
After Launch Control was used, the transmis#j
sion must cool down for approx. 5 minutes, be#j fore Launch Control can be used again.Launch Control adjusts to the surroundingconditions, when used again.
AfterusingLaunchControl
To increase vehicle stability, activate DSC Dy#j
namic Stability Control again as soon as possi#j ble.
Systemlimits
An experienced driver may be able to achieve better acceleration values in DSC OFF mode.

The Driving Dynamics Control influences the driving dynamics properties of the vehicle. The
vehicle can be adjusted depending on the sit#j

Concept
The Check Control system monitors functions
in the vehicle and notifies you of malfunctions
in the monitored systems.
Generalinformation
A Check Control message is displayed as a
combination of indicator or warning lights and
SMS text messages in the instrument cluster
and in the Head-up Display.
In addition, an acoustic signal may sound and a SMS text message may appear on the Control
Display.
Indicator/warninglights
Concept
Indicator/warning lights in the instrument clus#j
ter display the status of some functions in the vehicle and indicate when a malfunction ispresent in the monitored systems.
Generalinformation The indicator and warning lights can light up in
a variety of combinations and colors.
Several of the lamps are checked for properfunctioning and light up temporarily whendrive-ready state is switched on.
Redlights
Safetybeltreminder Indicator lamp flashes or is illuminated:
safety belt on the driver or passenger
side is not buckled. The safety belt re#j
minder can also be activated if objects are placed on the front passenger seat.
Make sure that the safety belts are positioned
correctly.
Airbagsystem Airbag system and belt tensioner are
not working.
Have the vehicle checked immediately
by a dealer#ss service center or another quali#j fied service center or repair shop.
Parkingbrake The parking brake is set.
