cle driving ahead will not be detected or will be
detected very late.
When you approach a curve the system may briefly report vehicles in the next lane due to
the bend of the curve. If the system deceler#j
ates you may compensate it by briefly acceler#j
ating. After releasing the accelerator pedal the system is reactivated and controls speed inde#j
pendently.
Drivingaway In some situations, the vehicle cannot drive off
automatically; for example:
'yOn steep inclines.'yFrom bumps in the road.
In these cases, step on the accelerator pedal.
Weather
The following restrictions can occur under un#j
favorable weather or light conditions:
'yPoorer vehicle recognition.'yShort-term interruptions for vehicles that
are already recognized.
Examples of unfavorable weather or light con#j
ditions:
'yWet conditions.'ySnowfall.'ySlush.'yFog.'yGlare.Drive attentively, and react to the current traffic situation. If necessary, intervene actively, for
instance by braking, steering or evading.
Enginepower The desired speed is also maintained downhill. The speed may not be maintained on uphill
grades if the engine power is insufficient.
In ECO PRO driving mode, the vehicle may in#j
tentionally exceed or drop below the set de#j
sired speed in some situations, for instance on downhill or uphill grades.
Malfunction
The system cannot be activated if the radar sensor is not aligned correctly. This may be
caused by damage incurred, e.g., during park#j
ing.
A Check Control message is displayed if the
system fails.
Have the system checked by a dealer#ss service
center or another qualified service center or re#j pair shop.
The function for detecting and responding
when approaching stationary vehicles may be limited in the following situations:'yDuring calibration of the camera immedi#jately after vehicle delivery.'yIf the camera is malfunctioning or dirty. ACheck Control message is displayed.
Steeringandlanecontrol
assistant
Concept
The system assists the driver in keeping the
vehicle within the lane. For this purpose, the system executes supporting steering move#j
ments, for instance when driving in a curve.

Generalinformation
The system determines the position of the
lane markings and the vehicle driving ahead
using five radar sensors and a camera.
Depending on the speed, the system orients it#j
self according to the lane markings or vehicles
in front.
Sensors on the steering wheel detect whether
the steering wheel is being touched.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from per#j
sonal responsibility to assess the traffic situa#j tion. Based on the limits of the system, it can#j
not independently react to all traffic situations.
There is a risk of an accident. Adjust driving
style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic closely
and actively intervene where appropriate.'

PDC is a support when parking. Objects that
you are approaching slowly in front of or be#j hind the vehicle are indicated with:'ySignal tones.'yVisual display.
With parking assistant: obstacles on the side ofthe vehicle that are detected by the sensors of the parking assistant, may also be reported bythe side protection function, refer to page 207.
Generalinformation
The ultrasound sensors for distance measure#j
ments are located in the bumpers and possibly
on the sides of the vehicle.
The maneuvering range, depending on the ob#j
stacle and environmental conditions, is approx.
6 ft/2 m.
An acoustic warning sounds in case of an im#j pending collision at a distance to the object of approx. 27 in/70 cm.
For objects behind the vehicle, the acoustic warning is already issued at a distance to theobject of approx. 5 ft/1.50 m.
Safetyinformation WARNING

sonal responsibility to assess the traffic situa#j tion. Based on the limits of the system, it can#jnot independently react to all traffic situations.

WARNING
Signaltones Generalinformation
When approaching an object, an intermittent
sound indicates the position of the object. E.g.,
if an object is detected to the left rear of the
vehicle, a signal tone sounds from the left rear
speaker.
The shorter the distance to the object, the
shorter the intervals.
If the distance to a detected object is less than approx. 10 inches/25 cm, a continuous tone issounded.
If there are objects in front of and behind the vehicle at the same time, with a distance
smaller than approx. 10 in/25 cm, an alternat#j ing constant tone will sound.
The intermittent tone and constant tone are
switched off if the selector lever position P is engaged.
The intermittent tone is switched off after a short time when the vehicle is stationary.
Volume
The ratio of the PDC signal tone volume to the entertainment volume can be adjusted.
Via iDrive:1."My Vehicle"2."iDrive settings"3."Tone"4."Volume settings"5."PDC"6.Set the desired value.
The setting is stored for the driver profile cur#j
rently used.
Visualwarning
The approach of the vehicle to an object is
shown on the Control Display. Objects that are farther away are already displayed on the Con#jtrol Display before a signal sounds.

Withparkingassistant:emergency brakingfunction,ActivePDC
Concept
The emergency braking function of PDC ini#j
tiates an emergency braking in case of acute
risk of collision.
Generalinformation
Due to system limits, a collision cannot be pre#j
vented under all circumstances.
The function is available from walking speed while backing up or rolling backward.
A press of the accelerator pedal interrupts the braking intervention.
After emergency braking to a stop, further
creeping toward an obstacle is possible. To
creep toward the obstacle, lightly press the ac#j
celerator pedal and release it again.
If the accelerator pedal is heavily depressed,
the vehicle drives off as usual. Manual braking
is possible at any time.
The system uses the ultrasound sensors of
PDC and parking assistant.

Display
To protect the sides of the vehicle, obstaclemarkings are displayed on the vehicle at the
sides.
'yColor markings: warning against detected
obstacles.'yGray markings, hatched area: no obstacles were detected.'yNo markings, black area: the area next to
the vehicle was not yet captured.
Limitsofsideprotection
The system only displays stationary obstaclesthat were previously detected by sensors whilepassing them.
The system does not detect whether an obsta#j cle moves later on. If the vehicle is stationary,
the markings are shown in black after a certain time. The area next to the vehicle must be
newly captured.
