must be observed.
Breaking-inperiod
Generalinformation Moving parts need to begin working togethersmoothly.
The following instructions will help you to ach#j
ieve a long vehicle life and good efficiency.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Due to new parts and components,
safety and driver assistance systems can react
with a delay. There is a risk of an accident. Af#j
ter installing new parts or with a new vehicle,
drive conservatively and intervene early if nec#j
essary. Observe the break-in procedures of
the respective parts and components.'

'yClose all windows and the glass sunroof.'yGreatly increase the air flow from the vents.'yDrive moderately.
HotexhaustsystemWARNING
During driving operation, high tempera#j
tures can occur underneath the vehicle body, e.g., caused by the exhaust gas system. If
combustible materials, such as leaves or grass, come in contact with hot parts of the exhaust
gas system, these materials can ignite. There
is a risk of injury or risk of property damage. Do not remove the heat shields installed and never
apply undercoating to them. Make sure that no combustible materials can come in contact
with hot vehicle parts in driving operation, idle
or during parking. Do not touch the hot ex#j
haust system.'

Brakingsafely
Generalinformation
The vehicle is equipped with the Antilock
Brake System ABS as a standard feature.
Perform an emergency stop in situations that require such.
Steering is still responsive. You can still avoid any obstacles with a minimum of steering ef#j
fort.
Pulsation of the brake pedal and sounds from
the hydraulic circuits indicate that the Antilock
Brake System ABS is in its active mode.
In certain braking situations, the perforated
brake discs can emit functional noises. How#j
ever, functional noises have no effect on the
performance and operational reliability of the
brake.
Objectsintheareaaroundthepedals WARNING
Objects in the driver's floor area can limit
the pedal distance or block a depressed pedal.
There is a risk of an accident. Stow objects in
the vehicle such that they are secured and
cannot enter into the driver's floor area. Use
floor mats that are suitable for the vehicle and
can be safely attached to the floor. Do not use loose floor mats and do not layer several floor
mats. Make sure that there is sufficient clear#j
ance for the pedals. Ensure that the floor mats
are securely fastened again after they were re#j
moved, for instance for cleaning.'

Corrosion buildup on the brake discs will cause
a pulsating effect on the brakes in their re#j sponse - generally this cannot be corrected.
Condensationwaterundertheparked
vehicle
When using the automatic climate control,
condensation water develops and collects un#j
derneath the vehicle.
Roof-mountedluggagerack Generalinformation
Installation only possible in roof drip rail with
flaps. Further information is available from a dealer#ss service center or another qualifiedservice center or repair shop.
Roof racks are available as special accessories.
Roofdriprailwithflaps
The fixing points are located in the roof drip railabove the doors.
Fold the cover outward.
Mounting Follow the installation instructions of the roofrack.
Be sure that adequate clearance is maintained for tilting and opening the glass sunroof.
Magneticroof-mountedluggageracks
Because of the aluminum roof, magnetic roof- mounted luggage racks cannot be used.
Loading
Because roof-mounted luggage racks raise the
vehicle's center of gravity when loaded, they have a major effect on vehicle handling andsteering response.
Therefore, note the following when loading
and driving:'yDo not exceed the approved roof/axle
loads and the approved gross vehicle
weight.'yBe sure that adequate clearance is main#j
tained for tilting and opening the glass sunroof.'yDistribute the roof load uniformly.'yThe roof load should not extend past the
loading area.'yAlways place the heaviest pieces on the
bottom.'ySecure the roof luggage firmly, for instance
using ratchet straps.'yDo not let objects project into the opening
path of the tailgate.'yDrive cautiously and avoid sudden acceler#j
ation and braking maneuvers. Take corners
gently.
Drivingonracetracks
Higher mechanical and thermal loads during
racetrack operation lead to increased wear. This wear is not covered by the warranty. Thevehicle is not designed for use in motor sportscompetition.

SavingfuelVehiclefeaturesandoptionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Generalinformation
The vehicle contains advanced technologies
for the reduction of fuel consumption and
emission values.
Fuel consumption depends on a number of dif#j ferent factors.
Carrying out certain measures, such as a mod#j erate driving style and regular maintenance, can influence fuel consumption and the envi#jronmental impact.
RemoveunnecessarycargoAdditional weight increases fuel consumption.
Removeattachedparts
followinguse
Remove auxiliary mirrors, roof-mounted or rear
luggage racks which are no longer required fol#j lowing use.
Attached parts on the vehicle impair the aero#j dynamics and increase the fuel consumption.Closethewindowsandglass
sunroof
Driving with the glass sunroof and windows
open results in increased air resistance and
raises fuel consumption.
Tires Generalinformation
Tires can affect fuel consumption in various ways, e.g., tire size may influence fuel con#j
sumption.
Checkthetireinflationpressure
regularly
Check and, if needed, correct the tire inflation
pressure at least twice a month and before
starting on a long trip.
Low tire inflation pressure increases rolling re#j
sistance and thus raises fuel consumption and
tire wear.
Driveawaywithoutdelay
Do not wait for the engine to warm-up while the vehicle remains stationary. Start drivingright away, but at moderate engine speeds.
This is the quickest way of warming the cold engine up to operating temperature.
Lookwellaheadwhen
driving
Driving smoothly and proactively reduces fuelconsumption.
Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking.
By maintaining a suitable distance to the vehi#j cle driving ahead of you.Seite 268DrivingtipsSavingfuel268

Avoidhighenginespeeds
Driving at low engine speeds lowers fuel con#j
sumption and reduces wear.
If necessary, observe the vehicle's gear shift
indicator, refer to page 140.
Usecoastingconditions When approaching a red light, take your footoff the accelerator and let the vehicle coast toa halt.
For going downhill take your foot off the accel#j erator and let the vehicle roll.
The flow of fuel is interrupted while coasting.
The high-voltage battery is charged.
Chargeregularly
Charge the vehicle as often as possible at a
charging facility. This will further reduce fuel
consumption due to the use of electrical en#j ergy.
Switchofftheengineduring
longerstops
Switch off the engine during longer stops, for
instance at traffic lights, railroad crossings or in
traffic congestion.
Switchoffanyfunctionsthat
arenotcurrentlyneeded
Functions such as seat heating and the rear
window defroster require a lot of energy and
increase fuel consumption, especially in city
and stop-and-go traffic.
Switch off these functions if they are not
needed.
The ECO PRO driving mode supports the en#j ergy conserving use of comfort features. These functions are automatically deactivatedpartially or completely.
Havemaintenancecarried
out
Have the vehicle maintained regularly to ach#jieve optimal vehicle efficiency and service life.
BMW recommends that maintenance work be
performed by a BMW dealer#ss service center.
For information on the BMW Maintenance
System, refer to page 322.
Usingthehybridsystem
efficiently
Concept
The vehicle's hybrid system runs automati#j
cally. Through foresighted driving, the hybrid
properties are efficiently used, i.e., fuel con#j sumption and energy recovery are optimized.
Optimizingenergyrecovery
Typesofenergyrecovery
Energy recovery is used to charge the high- voltage battery. Energy recovery is importantfor the supply of electrical components andthus a prerequisite for fuel efficiency. Energy
recovery appears in three stages during coast#j ing and braking:'yLow energy recovery: while coasting to ahalt without stepping on the brake.'yAverage energy recovery: while decelerat#j
ing slightly by gently pressing the brake
pedal.'yMaximum energy recovery: when pressing the brake pedal somewhat more firmly pro#jvided that the pointer remains in the mid#j
dle area of the CHARGE indicator in the in#j
strument cluster, refer to page 132.Seite 269SavingfuelDrivingtips269

OptimumenergyrecoveryForesighted driving and decelerating helps
with optimizing energy recovery.
As soon as the display shows the maximum
energy recovery, only press the brake pedal
harder if required by the situation.
Exemplarytrafficsituationsforfuel
efficiency
In many driving situations, the hybrid system allows for a particularly efficient energy man#j
agement.'yStop-and-go traffic:
The combustion engine is switched on or
over automatically by the hybrid system.'yDriving with constant speed:
The electric motor relieves the combustion
engine periodically by also being switched
on.
Optimizingfuelconsumption
Chargingthevehicleregularly
Charge the vehicle regularly and completely
using a suitable charging device. This will re#j
duce fuel consumption due to the use of elec#j
trical energy.
Longer idle periods, refer to page 337, can re#j
duce the charge state of the high-voltage bat#j
tery.
Avoidingtheuseofthecombustion
engine
Observe the following information to avoid us#j
ing the combustion engine:
'ySet the characteristics of the hybrid sys#j
tem to MAX eDRIVE, refer to page 112.'yObserve the indicators in the instrument
cluster regarding electric driving, refer to
page 131.Usingthenavigationsystemregularly
Use the navigation system also for familiar and
regularly traveled routes. When the navigation system destination guidance is active, the hy#jbrid system uses the existing navigation data. The upcoming course of the road is analyzed.
Hybrid operation adapts to the specific route
sections.
ECOPRO
Concept
ECO PRO supports a driving style that saves
on fuel consumption. For this purpose, the en#j
gine control and comfort features, for instance the climate control output, are adjusted.
Under certain conditions the engine is auto#jmatically decoupled from the transmission in
the D selector lever position and the engine is switched off. The D selector lever position re#jmains engaged.
In addition, context-sensitive information, ECO
PRO tips, are displayed to assist with an opti#j
mized fuel consumption driving style.
Generalinformation
The system includes the following
EfficientDynamics functions and
EfficientDynamics displays:'yECO PRO climate control, refer to
page 271.'yDriving style analysis, refer to page 271.
