Planningthechargingprocess
Generalinformation
The charging process can be adapted to con#j
straints, such as the cost of electricity or avail#j
able power sources. The vehicle can control
the charging process in such a way that the
charging process is completed at the depar#j
ture time. A departure time must be set for this purpose, refer to page 283.
The following settings are available:'yImmediate charging.'ySet time window for favorable charging.'ySet charging via a Level 1 charging cable.'yIntelligent charging.
If drive-ready state is switched off, changes
can be made via iDrive. Settings for stationary
climate control and charging process are also
accepted for planned departure times.
Intelligent charging can be ignored for the next
charging process.

The charging process starts as soon as the
charging cable is connected.

When departure time is set, a time window for
charging with a favorable electricity rate can be
set.

The Digital Charging Service enables the time window to be set automatically for certain loca#j
tions. Further information about the Digital Charging Service is available on the Internet:

The vehicle can also start the charging process
before the selected time window begins or end
it after the selected time window finishes. The
starting point of the charging process is ad#j justed so the vehicle can be fully charged and,
if applicable, its climate controlled right up to
the departure time.
If drive-ready state is switched off, changes
can be made via iDrive.
The set time window can be ignored for the
next charging process.

Set the charge current strength at other
household sockets to the lowest level.

ing cable. This enables, e.g., the use of other

the interruption.

Intelligentcharging
Concept
Intelligent charging can adapt the charging
process dynamically via the Internet to the en#j
vironmental condition, such as the availability
of solar power or time-variable electricity rates.
Intelligent charging is part of BMW's Digital Charging Service.
Further information about the Digital Charging
Service is available on the Internet:

Generalinformation
No time for the end of charging is displayed in the instrument cluster for intelligent charging.
If drive-ready state is switched off, changes
can be made via iDrive.
Intelligent charging can be ignored for the next
charging process.

The charge state indicator light, refer to page 131, shows the charge state of the high-
voltage battery in the instrument cluster, if
standby state is switched on. If all bars are fil#j led, the high-voltage battery is fully charged.
Even if no bars are filled, the high-voltage sys#jtem is still under high voltage.
Information regarding the charging process are
shown on the charging screen, refer to
page 130.

Departuretime
Concept
For optimum range and climate control, the
departure time can be set before parking the
vehicle.
Generalinformation
With a set departure time, the vehicle is pre- heated or pre-cooled during the charging
process if climate control is set. Climate con#j
trol output is reduced during the trip. This in#j
creases the range during electric driving.
The following settings are possible at depar#j ture time:'yClimate control at departure time.'yScheduling of up to three regular departuretimes.
If drive-ready state is switched off, changes
can be made via iDrive. Settings for climate
control and charging process are also applied
for scheduled departure times.

Generalinformation
In addition to the high-voltage battery, the ve#j
hicle has a 12 volt vehicle battery, which is re#j
quired for operation of the onboard electron#j ics.
If the high-voltage battery is discharged and
the combustion engine is started, air condi#j
tioning may be limited.
With a discharged vehicle battery, no operation
of the vehicle is possible.
Startingthevehicle
If the vehicle battery is discharged, the com#j
bustion engine can be started using the bat#j tery of another vehicle and two jumper cables,see Jump-starting, refer to page 330.

Follow the fuel recommendation, refer to
page 288, prior to refueling.
To also ensure all engine functions under un#j
favorable conditions, for instance vehicle on a steep incline, at least 3 US gal/10 liters fuelshould be refueled.
Safetyinformation WARNING
If a sufficient safety distance from easily
flammable materials is not maintained, simulta#j neous charging and filling with fuel can cause a
risk of fire. There is a risk of injury or risk of
property damage. Do not fill the vehicle with
fuel and charge it simultaneously.'

If the fuel filler flap is not opened within10 minutes after the fuel filler flap was re#j
leased, the fuel filler flap relocks. Press
button again.
Fuelcap
Opening
Before opening , vent the tank, refer to page 285.
1.Briefly press the rear edge of the fuel filler
flap.2.Turn the fuel cap counterclockwise.3.Place the fuel cap in the bracket attached
to the fuel filler flap.Closing
WARNING
The retaining strap of the fuel cap can be
jammed and crushed during closing. The cap cannot be correctly closed. Fuel or fuel vapors
can escape. There is a risk of injury or risk of property damage. Pay attention that the retain#jing strap is not jammed or crushed when clos#jing the lid.'

off the first time.

Fuelrecommendation
Generalinformation Depending on the region, many gas stations
sell fuel that has been customized to winter or
summer conditions. Fuel that is available in
winter, e.g., helps make a cold start easier.
Gasoline
Generalinformation For the best fuel efficiency, the gasolineshould be sulfur-free or very low in sulfur con#jtent.
Fuels that are marked on the gas pump as con#j taining metal must not be used.
Fuels with a maximum ethanol content of
10 %, i. e., E10, may be used for refueling.
Ethanol should meet the following quality stan#j dards:
US: ASTM 4806#mxx
CAN: CGSB-3.511#mxx
xx: comply with the current standard in each
case.Safetyinformation
CAUTION
The use of poor-quality fuels may result
in harmful engine deposits or damage. Addi#j
tionally, problems relating to drivability, start#j ing and stalling, especially under certain envi#j
ronmental conditions such as high ambient
temperature and high altitude, may occur.
If drivability problems are encountered, we rec#j
ommend switching to a high quality gasoline brand and a higher octane grade #n AKI num#jber #n for a few tank fills. To avoid harmful en#j
gine deposits, it is highly recommended to
purchase gasoline from Top Tier retailers.
Failure to comply with these recommendations
may result in the need for unscheduled main#j
tenance.'

Fuel that does not comply with the mini#j
mum quality can compromise engine function or cause engine damage. There is a risk ofproperty damage. Do not fill with fuel that doesnot comply with the minimum quality.'
