Hills General information
On downhill sections, use energy recovery if
possible to decelerate the vehicle.
Safety information
WARNING
Light but consistent brake pressure can lead to high temperatures, brakes wearing out and possibly even brake failure. There is a risk of anaccident. Avoid placing excessive stress on the
brake system.
WARNING
In idle state or with drive-ready state switched
off, safety-relevant functions, for instance enj
gine braking effect, braking force boost and steering assistance, are restricted or not availajble at all. There is a risk of an accident. Do not
drive in idle state or with drive-ready state switched off.
Brake disc corrosion
Corrosion on the brake discs and contamination
on the brake pads are increased by the following
circumstances:
'xLow mileage.'xExtended periods when the vehicle is not
used at all.'xInfrequent use of the brakes.'xAggressive, acidic, or alkaline cleaning
agents.Corrosion buildup on the brake discs will cause a pulsating effect on the brakes in their response -
generally this cannot be corrected.
Condensation water under the parked
vehicle
When using the automatic climate control, conj
densation water develops and collects underj neath the vehicle.
Driving on racetracks
Higher mechanical and thermal loads during
racetrack operation lead to increased wear. This wear is not covered by the warranty. The vehicle
is not designed for use in motor sports competij tion.

Steps for Determining CorrectLoad Limit1.Locate the statement vThe combined weight
of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs.w on your vehicless placard.2.Determine the combined weight of the driver
and passengers that will be riding in your vej
hicle.3.Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from XXX kg or XXX lbs.4.The resulting figure equals the available
amount of cargo and luggage load capacity. For example, if the vXXXw amount equals
1,400 lbs. and there will be five 150 lb pasj
sengers in your vehicle, the amount of availaj ble cargo and luggage load capacity is
650 lbs. (1,400m750 (5 x 150) 650 lbs.)5.Determine the combined weight of luggage and cargo being loaded on the vehicle. That
weight may not safely exceed the available
cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in
Step 4.6.If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load
from your trailer will be transferred to your vej
hicle. Consult this manual to determine how this reduces the available cargo and luggageload capacity of your vehicle.
Load
The maximum load is the sum of the weight of
the occupants and the cargo.
The greater the weight of the occupants, the
less cargo that can be transported.
Stowing and securing cargo'xDo not exceed permissible rear axle load.'xCover sharp edges and corners on the cargo.'xHeavy cargo: stow as far forward as possible, directly behind and at the bottom of the rear
passenger seat backrests.'xVery heavy cargo: when the rear seat is not
occupied, secure each of the safety belts in the opposite buckle.'xIf necessary, fold down the rear backrests tostow cargo.'xDo not stack cargo above the top edge of thebackrests.'xSmaller and light cargo: secure with ratchetstraps or draw straps.'xLarger and heavy cargo: secure with cargo
straps.
Lashing eyes in the cargo area
There are four lashing eyes in the cargo area for
securing cargo.
Attach load securing aids, such as lashing straps,
retaining straps, draw straps or cargo nets, to the lashing eyes in the cargo area.

Increasing the rangeGeneral information
The vehicle contains comprehensive technoloj
gies for reducing the energy consumption and
for maximizing the range.
The range depends on a number of different facj tors.
The implementation of certain measures, driving style and regular maintenance can increasing therange and thereby also reduce the environmentalimpact.
Remove unnecessary cargo
Additional weight reduces the range.
Remove attached parts
following use
Attached parts on the vehicle impair the aerodyj namics and increase the energy consumption.
Close the windows and glasssunroof
Driving with the glass sunroof and windows open
results in increased air resistance and thereby rej duces the range.
Tires
General information
Tires can affect energy consumption in various ways, for instance energy consumption can beinfluenced by tire size.
Check the tire inflation pressure
regularly
Check and, if needed, correct the tire inflation
pressure at least twice a month and before startj ing on a long trip.
Low tire inflation pressure increases rolling rej
sistance and thus raises energy consumption and tire wear.
Stationary climate control
Run advance climate control, refer to page 178,
in the vehicle during charging before driving off.
Heating and cooling operations are very energy intensive and substantially reduce the electricrange.
Look well ahead when driving
Driving smoothly and proactively reduces energy
consumption.
Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking. By maintaining a suitable distance to the vehicle driving ahead of you.
Longer braking procedures result in more effij cient charging of the high-voltage battery via enj
ergy recovery from braking.
Use accelerator pedal fordeceleration and coasting
When approaching a red light, use acceleratorpedal for decelerating.
For going downhill use coasting function; for this
purpose, press accelerator pedal just enough that the vehicle rolls.

Charging the vehicleVehicle features and options
This chapter describes all standard, country-spej
cific and optional features offered with the series.
It also describes features that are not necessarily
available in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selected
options or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Concept
The vehicle can be charged using various chargj ing cables at charging stations or householdsockets. Control and monitoring of the charging
process are handled completely automatically. The charge current strength can be set via
iDrive.
General information
High-voltage battery The high-voltage battery is used as an energy
accumulator. The high-voltage battery can be charged by energy recovery during the trip or via
the power grid.
In order to operate the high-voltage battery optij mally, charge the vehicle regularly and comj
pletely on a compatible charger.
When charging via the power grid, you can chose
between the following variants.
'xLevel 1 charging via a household socket.'xLevel 2 charging via a Level 2 charging staj tion.'xCharging via a DC charging station.
Level 1 charging is possible via a household
socket with a voltage of 120 volts.
For optimal use of the energy from the power grid, charging at a Level 2 charging station, such
as BMW i Wallbox, is recommended.
Charge current
General information
The charge current strength is indicated in amj
peres.
The vehicle cannot automatically detect the maxj imum permissible charge current strength of the
power grid during charging via a household
socket or charging station.
Level 1 charging Prior to the first Level 1 charging at your ownhousehold socket, as well as when charging atexternal electrical power sockets in Level 1, the
allowed charge current strength must be deterj
mined, for instance by a qualified electrician.
The charge current strength for Level 1 chargj ing, refer to page 217, can be adjusted in the vej
hicle in three levels.
At delivery, the charge current for Level 1 chargj ing is set to the lowest level.
Depending on the country-specific version, one
of several ampere ratings is printed on the
Level 1 charging cable. This ampere rating is the limit which must be adhered to for the vehicle if
the charge current is set to the highest level. Dej pending on the charging cable, the charge curj
rent strength may vary when lower levels are set.
