Warningwithbrakingfunction
Display
If a collision with a person detected in this way
is imminent, a warning symbol appears on the
instrument cluster.
The red symbol is displayed and a sigj
nal sounds.
Intervene immediately by braking or make an
evasive maneuver.
Brakingintervention
The warning prompts the driver himself/herself
to react. During a warning, the maximum brakj
ing force is used. Prerequisite for the brake
booster is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake pedal. The system can assist with
some braking intervention if there is a risk of a collision. At low speeds vehicles may thus
come to a complete stop.
Manual transmission: During a braking interj
vention up to a complete stop, the engine may
be shut down.
The braking intervention is executed only if vej hicle stability has not been restricted, e.g., by deactivating the DSC Dynamic Stability Conjtrol.
The braking intervention can be interrupted by stepping on the accelerator pedal or by acjtively moving the steering wheel.
Object detection can be restricted. Observe
the limitations of the detection range and funcj tional restrictions.
Systemlimits
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system can react incorrectly or not
at all due to the system limits. There is a risk of
accidents or risk of property damage. Observethe information regarding the system limits
and actively intervene, if needed.'

LanedeparturewarningConcept
Starting at a specific speed, this system alerts you when the vehicle on streets with lane markings is about to leave the lane. This
speed, depending on the country version, is
between 35 mph/55 km/h and
45 mph/70 km/h.
When switching on the system below this
speed, a message is displayed in the instruj
ment cluster.
The steering wheel begins vibrating gently in
the event of warnings. The time of the warning
may vary depending on the current driving sitj uation.
The system does not provide a warning if the turn signal is set before leaving the lane.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not release the driver
from the personal responsibility to correctly assess route and traffic situation. There is arisk of an accident. Adjust the driving style to
the traffic conditions. Watch traffic closely and actively intervene in the respective situations. In the event of a warning, do not unnecessarilyjerk the steering wheel.'

Function
The system is activated each time the engine
is started and cannot be switched off.
After travel has begun, the system monitors
certain aspects of the driver's behavior, so that decreasing alertness or fatigue can be dejtected.
This procedure takes the following criteria into
account:'yPersonal driving style, e.g., steering behavj
ior.'yDriving conditions, e.g., length of trip.
Starting at approximately 43 mph/70 km/h, the
system is active and can display a recommenj dation to take a break.
Breakrecommendation
If the driver becomes less alert or fatigued, a
message is displayed in the Control Display
with the recommendation to take a break.
A recommendation to take a break is displayed
only once during an uninterrupted trip.
After a break, another recommendation to take
a break cannot be displayed until after approxij
mately 45 minutes.
Systemlimits
The function may be limited in the following
situations, e.g., and will either output an incorj
rect warning or no warning at all:
'yWhen the clock is set incorrectly.'yWhen the vehicle speed is mainly below about 43 mph/70 km/h.'yWith a sporty driving style, such as duringrapid acceleration or when cornering fast.'yIn active driving situations, such as when
changing lanes frequently.'yWhen the road surface is poor.'yIn the event of strong side winds.
The system is reset approx. 45 minutes after
parking the vehicle, e.g., in the case of a break during longer trips on highways.

DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable country provisions
must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem
ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during
braking.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing
active safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant When you apply the brakes rapidly, this systemautomatically produces the greatest possible
braking force boost. It reduces the braking disj
tance to a minimum during emergency stop.
This system utilizes all of the benefits provided
by ABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal
for the duration of the emergency stop.DSCDynamicStability
Control
Concept
Within the physical limits, the system helps to
keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducj
ing engine speed and by applying brakes to
the individual wheels.
Generalinformation
Dynamic Stability Control detects, e.g., the folj lowing unstable driving conditions:'yFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'yLoss of traction of the front wheels, which
can lead to understeering.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system does not release from the
personal responsibility to correctly assess the
traffic situation. Based on the limits of the sysj tem, it cannot independently react to all trafficsituations. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
the driving style to the traffic conditions. Watch
traffic closely and actively intervene in the rej
spective situations.'

MDynamicModeMDM
Concept
M Dynamic Mode makes it possible to drive on
a dry roadway with high longitudinal and transj
verse acceleration but with limited driving staj bility.
Only in the absolute limit area does the system
intervene for stabilization by reducing the enj gine power and by braking interventions on the
wheels. In this driving condition, additional
steering corrections may be necessary.
You may find it useful to briefly activate MDM
under the following special circumstances:'yWhen driving in slush or on uncleared,
snow-covered roads.'yWhen freeing vehicle from deep snow or driving off from loose ground.'yWhen driving with snow chains.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
When M Dynamic Mode is activated, staj
bilizing interventions are carried out only to a
reduced extent. There is a risk of accidents or risk of property damage. Adapt to traffic condij
tions. Watch traffic closely and actively interj
vene in the respective situations. In the event
of a warning, do not unnecessarily jerk the steering wheel.'

ActiveMdifferential Theconcept The active M differential assures continuously
variable locking of the rear axle differential dej
pending on the driving situation. This prevents
individual rear wheels from spinning even
when DSC is switched off and in M Dynamic
Mode, so that optimum traction is always asj
sured in all driving situations.
The driver is responsible adapting his or her
driving behavior to the situation.Servotronic
Concept
The Servotronic varies the steering force rej quired to turn the wheels in accordance withthe vehicle speed. At low speeds, the steeringforce is strongly supported, i. e. during steerjing, low force is required. As the speed injcreases, the assistance of the steering force is
reduced.
Furthermore, the steering force adapts accordj ing to the driving program, so that a direct, sporty feel and/or comfortable steering is conjveyed.
Programs Steering force setting options:'yCOMFORT: low.'ySPORT: high.'ySPORT+: high.
Selectingachannel
The desired channel is selected using the Drivj
ing Dynamics Control, refer to page 117.
DrivingDynamicsControl Concept
The Driving Dynamics Control helps to fine- tune the vehicle's settings and features. Varij
ous programs can be selected for this purpose.
The Driving Dynamics Control and the DSC OFF buttons can each be used to activate a
program.
