After the wipers are folded back down, the wiper
system must be reactivated.
1.Fold the wipers back down onto the windj

Washerfluid
Generalinformation
All washer nozzles are supplied from one reserj
voir.
Use a mixture of tap water and windshield washer concentrate. If desired, a windshield
washer concentrate containing antifreeze can be
used.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain harmful
substances and are flammable. There is a risk of fire and a risk of injury. Follow the instrucj
tions on the containers. Keep antifreeze away
from ignition sources. Do not refill operating
materials into different bottles. Store operating
materials out of reach of children.
United States: the washer fluid mixture ratio is
regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individual states; do not exceed the allowable washer fluid
dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the usage
instructions on the washer fluid container.
Use of BMWss Windshield Washer Concentrate
or the equivalent is recommended.
WARNING
Washer fluid can ignite and catch fire on conj
tact with hot engine parts. There is a risk of inj
jury or risk of damage to property. Only add
washer fluid when the engine is cooled down.
Next, fully close the lid of the washer fluid resj
ervoir.
NOTE
Silicon-containing additives in the washer fluid
for the water-repelling effect on the windows can lead to damage to the washing system.
There is a risk of damage to property. Do not add silicon-containing additives to the washerfluid.

'xSet the parking brake.'xOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'xOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, for instance with a
wheel chock.
Selectorlever,selectorlever

Overview
'xR: reverse gear.'xN: neutral.'x Center position, forward position.'x+: manual upshifting.'x-: manual downshifting.'xD/S: switch between drive mode and sequenjtial mode.
Engagingaselectorleverposition
Press on the brake pedal and pull or push the sejlector lever in the corresponding direction.
As soon as the selector lever is released, it rej
verts to the center position. In position R, the sej
lector lever locks.
The engaged selector lever position is displayed in the instrument cluster and on the selector
lever.
If a selector lever position is engaged, the vehicle may start rolling, after the brake is released, for instance on downhill slopes. Thus, drive off imjmediately after releasing the brake.

Use the Slow Speed Assistant for maneuvering
and during stop-and-go traffic.
LowSpeedAssistant Concept
The Low Speed Assistant gives assistance at very low speeds. The vehicle moves at walking
speed.
This can also be used for rocking the vehicle in
the snow. To do this, switch between reverse gear and forward gear without stepping on thebrakes in the process.
Safetyinformation
NOTE
When using the function and simultaneously
stepping on the brake pedal for a longer time, the transmission can overheat. There is a risk of
damage to property. When using the function, do not brake for a longer period.
Activating
1.Engage a driving position.2.Briefly tap the accelerator pedal.
In 1st and 2nd gear and in reverse, the vehiclerolls at minimum speed.
Deactivating
Apply the brakes until the vehicle comes to a stop.

The actually engaged transmission position can deviate from the selector lever position in somesituations. The display in the selector leverflashes.
Observe the display in the instrument cluster in these cases.
DisDrivemode
In Drive mode, all forward gears are automaticallychanged.
Kickdown: for maximum acceleration, for inj
stance when passing. To do this, depress the acj celerator pedal past the resistance point.
Switch to Sequential mode: shift using the shift
paddles or the selector lever, or push the selecj tor lever in the D/S direction.
SisSequentialmode Use the shift paddles or the selector lever to upjshift or downshift without letting off the gas.'xShortly before falling below a gear-dependentminimum speed, the transmission is automatjically downshifted.'xUpshifting or downshifting is done only if therpm and vehicle speed are appropriate.
E.g., there is no downshifting if the enginespeed is too high.'xKickdown: the lowest possible gear is sejlected by simultaneously operating the kickjdown and the left shift paddle or selector
lever.'xIt is also possible to start out in 2nd gear, for instance on icy roads.
Switch to Drive mode: push selector lever in D/S
direction.
ReverseR Select only when the vehicle is stationary.
It is also possible to rock the vehicle up to
6 mph/10 km/h. To do this, switch between forj
ward gear and reverse gear without stepping on the brakes in the process.

Concept
Launch Control enables optimum acceleration
on surfaces with good traction.
Generalinformation The use of Launch Control causes premature
component wear since this function represents a very heavy load for the vehicle.
Do not use Launch Control during the break-in,
refer to page 196, period.
Requirements
Launch Control is available when the engine is
warmed up, that is, after uninterrupted driving of
at least 6 miles/10 km.
To start with Launch Control do not steer the
steering wheel.
ActivateLaunchControl1.Deactivate Dynamic Stability Control, refer to
page 156.2.Select Sequential mode with gear 1.3.With the engine running, apply the brake with
the left foot.4.Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
The starting engine speed adjusts.5.If necessary, change the starting engine speed by 500 rpm via cruise control.6.Release the brake, the vehicle accelerates.Continue to depress the accelerator pedal.
Upshifting occurs automatically as long as theaccelerator pedal is fully depressed.
Launch Control is available again only after a cerj
tain distance has been driven.
Systemlimits
This transmission has an overheating protection mechanism, which protects the clutch from exjtreme stress.

Further driving at a moderate pace is possij ble. At the next opportunity, stop the vehicle,shut off the engine and allow the transmisj
sion to cool down.
Avoid fast starts. On uphill grades, do not keep
the vehicle stationary by applying a small amount
of acceleration while riding the clutch, as this
may cause the transmission to overheat.
During traffic jams or at very low speeds, use the
Low Speed Assistant, refer to page 114.

CheckControl
Concept
The Check Control system monitors functions in
the vehicle and notifies you of malfunctions in the monitored systems.
Generalinformation
A Check Control message is displayed as a comj
bination of indicator or warning lights and SMS text messages in the instrument cluster.
In addition, an acoustic signal may sound and anSMS text message may appear on the Control
Display.
Indicator/warninglights Generalinformation The indicator/warning lights in the instrument
cluster can light up in a variety of combinations
and colors.
Several of the lights are checked for proper funcj
tioning and light up temporarily when the engine
is started or the ignition is switched on.
Redlights Safetybeltreminder Safety belt on the driver's side is not
buckled. For some country versions: pasj
senger belt is not worn or objects are dej
tected on the front passenger seat.
Indicator light flashes or is illuminated: safety belt on the driver or passenger side is not buckled.
The safety belt reminder can also be activated if objects are placed on the front passenger seat.
Make sure that the safety belts are positionedcorrectly.
Airbagsystem
Airbag system and belt tensioner are not
working.
Have the vehicle checked immediately
by a dealerss service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.
Parkingbrake The parking brake is set.
Release the parking brake, refer to page 107.
Approachcontrolwarning Indicator light illuminates: advance warnj
ing is issued, for example when there is the impending danger of a collision or
the distance to the vehicle ahead is too small.
Increase distance.
Indicator light flashes: acute warning of the immij nent danger of a collision when the vehicle apj proaches another vehicle at a relatively high difj
ferential speed.
Intervention by braking or make an evasive maj
neuver.
Personwarning Symbol in the instrument cluster.
If a collision with a person detected in this way is imminent, the symbol lights
up and a signal sounds.
