Intervene immediately by braking or make an
evasive maneuver.
Brakingintervention
The warning prompts the driver to react. During a warning, the maximum braking force is used.
Prerequisite for the brake booster is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake pedal. If
there is a risk of collision, the system may assist
with braking. When the vehicle is traveling at a
low speed, the vehicle may come to a complete
stop.
Manual transmission: during a braking intervenj
tion up to a complete stop, the engine may be shut down.
The braking intervention occurs only if vehicle stability has not been restricted, for instance by
deactivating the DSC Dynamic Stability Control.
The driver may cancel the braking intervention
by stepping on the accelerator pedal or by acj
tively moving the steering wheel.
Object detection can be restricted. Follow the
limitations of the detection range and functional
restrictions.

Concept
The lane departure warning alerts when the vehij
cle on roads with lane markings is about to leave
the lane.
Generalinformation Depending on the country version, the system
issues a warning at speeds between
35 mph/55 km/h and 45 mph/70 km/h.
When switching on the system below this speed, a message is displayed in the instrument cluster.
Warnings are issued by means of a steering
wheel vibration. The time of the warning may
vary depending on the current driving situation.
The system does not provide a warning if the
turn signal is set before leaving the lane.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the driverss personal judgment in assessing road and traffic safety. There is a risk of an accident.Adjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watch
traffic closely and actively intervene where apj propriate. Do not jerk the steering wheel in rej

Additional brake lights indicate emergency brakj
ing to the traffic behind. This can reduce the risk
of a rear-end collision.
Generalinformation
'xDuring normal brake application, the outer
brake lights light up.'xDuring heavy brake application, the inner
brake lights additionally light up.
Alertnessassistant
Concept
The system can detect decreasing alertness or
fatigue of the driver during long, monotonous trips, for instance on highways. In this situation, it
is recommended that the driver takes a break.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the
driverss personal judgment in assessing one's physical state. An increasing lack of alertness or
fatigue may not be detected or not be detected in time. There is a risk of an accident. Make
sure that the driver is rested and alert. Adjust driving style to traffic conditions.
Function
The system is switched on each time the engine
is started and cannot be switched off.
After travel has begun, the system monitors cerj
tain aspects of the driver's behavior, so that dej
creasing alertness or fatigue can be detected.
This procedure takes the following criteria into
account:
'xPersonal driving style, for instance steering behavior.'xDriving conditions, for instance length of trip.
Starting at approximately 43 mph/70 km/h, the
system is active and can display a recommendaj tion to take a break.
Breakrecommendation If the driver becomes less alert or fatigued, amessage is displayed in the Control Display withthe recommendation to take a break.
A recommendation to take a break is displayed only once during an uninterrupted trip.
After a break, another recommendation to take a
break cannot be displayed until after approxij mately 45 minutes.
Systemlimits
The function may be limited in the following sitj
uations, for instance and will either output an inj
correct warning or no warning at all:
'xWhen the clock is set incorrectly.Seite 154CONTROLSSafety154

DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country-spejcific and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that are not necessarilyavailable in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selectedoptions or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during brakjing.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing acjtive safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant
When you apply the brakes rapidly, this system
automatically boosts the vehicle braking capabilj
ity to the furthest possible extent. It reduces the
braking distance to a minimum during emerj gency stop. This system utilizes all of the capajbilities provided by the Antilock Brake SystemABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal
for the duration of the emergency stop.
DSCDynamicStability
Control
Concept
Within the physical limits, the system helps to keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducingengine speed and by applying brakes to the indijvidual wheels.
Generalinformation DSC detects the following unstable driving conjditions, for instance:
'xFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'xLoss of traction of the front wheels, whichcan lead to understeering.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the
driverss personal judgment in assessing the
traffic situation. Based on the limits of the sysj tem, it cannot independently react to all trafficsituations. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic
closely and actively intervene where approprij
ate.
WARNING
When driving with a roof load, for instance with
roof-mounted luggage rack, the vehicle's cenj
ter of gravity is higher, which increases the risk of the vehicle tipping in critical driving situaj
tions. There is a risk of accidents or risk of
damage to property. Do not deactivate DSC
Dynamic Stability Control when driving with
roof load.

The indicator light lights up: DSC is dej
activated.
MDynamicModeMDM
Concept
M Dynamic Mode makes it possible to drive on a dry roadway with high longitudinal and transverse acceleration but with limited vehicle stability.
Only in the absolute limit area does the system
intervene for stabilization by reducing the engine
power and by braking interventions on the
wheels. In this driving condition, additional steerj
ing corrections may be necessary.
You may find it useful to briefly activate MDM
under the following special circumstances:'xWhen driving in slush or on uncleared, snow- covered roads.'xWhen freeing vehicle from deep snow or drivj
ing off from loose ground.'xWhen driving with snow chains.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
When M Dynamic Mode is activated, stabilizing interventions are carried out only to a reduced
extent. There is a risk of accidents or risk of
damage to property. Adjust driving style to trafj
fic conditions. Watch traffic closely and actively intervene where appropriate. Do not jerk thesteering wheel in response to a warning.
To increase vehicle stability, activate DSC again
as soon as possible.

ActiveMdifferential
Concept
The active M differential provides for continuj
ously variable locking of the rear axle differential
depending on the driving situation. This prevents
individual rear wheels from spinning even when DSC is switched off and in M Dynamic Mode, enabling optimum traction to be achieved in all
driving situations.
The driver is responsible adapting his or her drivj
ing style to the situation.
Servotronic
Concept
Servotronic is a speed-dependent power steerj
ing function.
The system provides the steering force with more support at low speeds than at higher ones.
This makes it easier to park, for instance, and
makes steering more direct when driving at faster speeds.
Furthermore, the steering force adapts according
to the driving program, so that a direct, sporty feel or a comfortable steering response is conj
veyed.
Programs Steering force setting options:
'xCOMFORT: low.'xSPORT: high.'xSPORT+: high.
SelectingachannelThe desired channel is selected using the Drivj
ing Dynamics Control, refer to page 158.
DrivingDynamicsControl
Concept
The Driving Dynamics Control helps to fine-tune the vehicle's settings and features. Various proj
grams can be selected for this purpose. The Driving Dynamics Control and the DSC OFF butjtons can each be used to activate a program.
