AirconditioningVehicleequipment
This chapter describes all standard, national
and special equipment available for the model
series. Therefore equipment which is not inj stalled in your vehicle, for example on account
of the selected optional equipment or the
country specification, may also be described
here. This also applies to safety-relevant funcj
tions and systems. Comply with the relevant
laws and regulations when using the correj
sponding functions and systems.Interiorairquality
An emissions-tested interior and the installaj
tion of microfilters and a climate-control sysj tem with functions for controlling the temperajture, air flow and air recirculation haveimproved air quality inside the vehicle.
In addition there are other functions which dej
pend on the vehicle's equipment, for example microfilter/activated charcoal filter, automaticair conditioning with automatic air recirculationcontrol AUC, and independent ventilation.

tions:'yRear window heating.'ySeat heating.
Switchingoff
In the lowest setting, press the left ofthe button.
Temperature
Principle
The automatic air conditioning adjusts to the set temperature as quickly as possible, using maximum cooling or heating power if necesjsary. The temperature is then maintained.
Adjusting Turn the wheel to select the dej
sired temperature.
Avoid switching between different temperature settings in rapid succession. The automatic airconditioning will otherwise not have sufficient
time to establish the temperature selected.
Coolingfunction Principle
Interior air is cooled and dried, then reheated
to suit the temperature setting.
The interior can only be cooled when the enj gine is running.
Switchingon/off
Press the button.
The cooling function is switched on or
off.
Depending on weather conditions, the windj
screen and side windows may mist over for a short time when the engine is started.
The cooling function is switched on automatij
cally in the AUTO program.
When the automatic air conditioning is in operj
ation, condensation, see page 195, develops
which exits underneath the vehicle.
AUTOprogram Principle
The air flow, air distribution and temperature are automatically regulated.
Switchingon/off Press the button.
Depending on the selected temperaj
ture and external influences, the air is directed
towards the windscreen, side windows, and
upper body, and into the footwell.
The cooling function, see page 172, is
switched on automatically in the AUTO proj
gram.
Recirculated-airmode Principle
If the air outside the vehicle has an unpleasant
odour or contains pollutants, the supply to the
interior of the vehicle can be shut off. The air inside the vehicle is then recirculated.

The automatic air conditioning regulates to
this temperature as quickly as possible, using high cooling or heating power if necessary.
Avoid switching between different temperature settings in rapid succession. The automatic air

time to establish the temperature selected.
Coolingfunction Principle
Interior air is cooled and dried, then reheated

Automaticairrecirculationcontrol,
AUC/recirculated-airmode
Principle
Automatic air recirculation control AUC dej
tects pollutants in the outside air. The supply
of outside air is shut off and the interior air is recirculated.
General
When the system is activated, a sensor detects
pollutants in the outside air and controls the shut-off automatically.
When the system is deactivated, outside air
flows into the interior continuously.
Continuous recirculated-air mode deteriorates
the air quality in the interior and condensation
on the windows increases.
Switchingon/off Press the button repeatedly to call up
an operating mode:'yLEDs off: ambient air is constantly entering the car.'yLeft-hand LED on, AUC mode: a sensordetects pollutants in the outside air andshuts off the supply automatically.'yRight-hand LED on, recirculated-air mode:
the ambient air supply is permanently shut off.
The recirculated-air mode automatically
switches off at low outside temperatures after a given time, to avoid condensation.
If there is condensation on the window, switch
off recirculated-air mode and press the AUTO button to use the condensation sensor. Ensurethat air can flow towards the windscreen.
Adjustingtheairflowmanually
Principle
The air flow for air conditioning can be set
manually.
General
To be able to adjust the air flow manually, first switch off the AUTO program.
Operation Press left or right side of button: rej
duce or increase air flow.
The selected air flow is shown on the display for automatic air conditioning.
In order to protect the battery the air flow rate
of the automatic air conditioning is reduced, if necessary.
Adjustingtheairdistributionmanually

The air distribution for air conditioning can be
set manually.

Defrostingwindowsandremoving
condensation
Principle
Ice and condensation are quickly removed from the windscreen and the front side winj dows.
Switchingon/off Press the button.
The LED is illuminated when the sysj
tem is switched on.
To do this, point the side nozzles at the side windows if necessary.
The air flow can be adapted when the proj gramme is active.
If there is condensation on the window, switch on the cooling function as well or press the AUTO button to use the condensation sensor.
Rearwindowheating Press the button. The LED is illuminaj
ted.
The rear window heating is switched off autoj matically after a certain period of time.
Microfilter/activatedcarbonfilter
In outside and recirculated-air mode, the mij crofilter/activated carbon filter filters dust, poljlen and harmful gases from the air.

Independentventilation
Principle The independent ventilation system ventilatesthe passenger compartment and lowers its temperature where required.
General
The independent ventilation can be switched on and off via two preselected switch-on timesor directly. The system remains switched onfor 30 minutes.
The independent ventilation is operated using
iDrive.
Operatingrequirements
'yDirect operation: vehicle is in radio ready
state.'yDirect operation or preselected switch-on
time: does not depend on the outside temj
perature.'yBattery is sufficiently charged.
The vehicle battery is discharged when the
independent ventilation is switched on. As a result, the maximum activation time is rej
stricted to protect the battery. After the enj
gine is started or after driving a short disj tance, the system will be available again.'yEnsure that the data and time are set corjrectly in the vehicle.'yOpen the ventilation vents to allow the airto enter the passenger compartment.
