cle washing, see page 244, and safe braking,
see page 194.
Drivetrain
In this vehicle, particular attention is paid to the
direct connection from the engine to the drivej train. Due to the torsionally stiff design of thedrivetrain, as usual in a sports car, the transjmission of the torque is can also be heard.
When there are load changes, it can thereforecause clattering noises. The clicking noises do
not affect the function or lifetime of the comj
ponents.
Drivingonaracingtrack
The higher mechanical and thermal loads inj
volved in driving on racing tracks lead to inj creased wear. This wear is not covered by thewarranty. The vehicle is not conceived for use
in motor sports competitions.
Before driving on a racing track, have the vehij
cle checked at a Service Partner of the manuj
facturer or another qualified Service Partner or
a specialist workshop.
The standard brake pads and the wear disj plays are not designed for racing track operaj
tion.
Further information and advice can be obj tained from a Service Partner of the manufacj
turer or another qualified Service Partner or a
specialist workshop.Seite 191BMWM4TechnologyDrivinghints191

DrivingprecautionsVehicleequipmentThis chapter describes all standard, national
and special equipment available for the model
series. Therefore equipment which is not inj stalled in your vehicle, for example on account
of the selected optional equipment or the
country specification, may also be described
here. This also applies to safety-relevant funcj
tions and systems. Comply with the relevant
laws and regulations when using the correj
sponding functions and systems.
Runningin
General Moving parts must adapt to one another.
The following notes will help to maximise the vehicle's lifetime and efficiency.
Do not use Launch Control when running in.
Safetynote WARNING
New parts and components can cause
safety and Driver Assistance Systems to rej spond with a delay. There is a danger of accijdents. After new parts have been installed, or if
the vehicle is new, drive moderately and interj vene at an early stage if necessary. Comply
with running-in procedures for the correj
sponding parts and components.'

Generaldrivinginformation
Closingthebootlid
Safetynote WARNING
When open, the boot lid protrudes above
the vehicle, and in the event of an accident, braking or avoidance manoeuvres, it can enj
danger vehicle occupants and other road
users, or damage the vehicle. There is also the
danger of exhaust fumes entering the interior
of the vehicle. There is a danger of injury or
damage to property. Do not drive with the boot lid open.'

'yDrive through water at no faster than
5 km/h, approximately 3 mph.
Safetynote
NOTE
Driving through excessively deep water
too fast can result in water entering the engine compartment, electrical system or transmisjsion. There is a danger of damage to property.
When driving through water, do not exceed the maximum specified water depth and maximum
fording speed.'

CorrosionofthebrakediscCorrosion of the brake discs and contaminaj
tion of the brake pads increase in the following
circumstances:'yLow mileage.'yExtended periods when the vehicle is not
used.'yInfrequent use of the brakes.'yAggressive, acidic or alkaline cleaning
agents.
Should corrosion form on the brake discs, the brakes will tend to respond with a pulsating efj fect that generally cannot be corrected.
CondensationwhenvehicleisparkedWhen the automatic air conditioning is in operj
ation, condensation develops which exits unj
derneath the vehicle.
Groundclearance NOTE
If there is insufficient ground clearance,
the front or rear spoiler can contact the ground, for example at curb edges or when
driving into underground car parks. There is a
danger of damage to property. Make sure that
there is sufficient ground clearance.'

LoadsVehicleequipment
This chapter describes all standard, national
and special equipment available for the model
series. Therefore equipment which is not inj stalled in your vehicle, for example on account
of the selected optional equipment or the
country specification, may also be described
here. This also applies to safety-relevant funcj
tions and systems. Comply with the relevant
laws and regulations when using the correj
sponding functions and systems.
Safetynotes WARNING
A high gross vehicle weight can cause
the tyres to overheat, causing internal damage
and a sudden loss of tyre inflation pressure.
The driving characteristics can be negatively
influenced, for example reduced directional
stability, longer braking distance and modified
steering characteristics. There is a danger of accidents. Comply with the permitted load inj
dex of the tyre, and do not exceed the permitj
ted gross vehicle weight.'

Lashingeyesintheboot
Four lashing eyes are located in the boot for
securing the load.
Equipment for securing the transported load, such as lashing straps, tensioning straps or
luggage nets, must be secured to the lashing eyes in the boot.
Floornet
The floor net can also be used for securing the load.
Hang the floor net on the eyes in the boot floor.
Roofrack
General Roof racks are available as special equipment.
Safetynote
WARNING
When driving with a roof load, for examj
ple with a roof rack, the higher centre of gravity can mean that driving safety is no longer guarj
anteed in critical driving situations. There is a danger of accident or damage to property. Donot deactivate Dynamic Stability Control DSC
when driving with a roof load.'

General
The vehicle possesses wide-ranging technoloj
gies for reducing consumption and emission levels.
Fuel consumption depends on various factors.
A number of measures, such as a moderate driving style and regular maintenance, can injfluence fuel consumption and reduce burdenon environment.
Removetransportedload
thatisnotrequired
Extra weight increases fuel consumption.
Removeadd-onpartsafter
use
Remove unneeded roof racks after use.Add-on parts on the vehicle interfere with its aerodynamic performance and increase fuel
consumption.Closingwindowsandthe
GlassRoof
An opened Glass Roof or opened window inj creases the drag and thus reduces the range.
Tyres
General Tyres can have differing effects on fuel conj
sumption. For example, fuel consumption can be affected by tyre size.
Checkingtyreinflationpressure
regularly
Check and, if necessary, correct tyre inflation
pressures at least twice a month and before
setting off on a longer journey.
Insufficient tyre inflation pressure increases
rolling resistance and consequently fuel conj
sumption and tyre wear.
Driveoffimmediately
Do not warm up the engine with the vehicle at a standstill; it is preferable to set off straight
away, driving at moderate engine speeds.
This brings the cold engine to operating temj
perature as quickly as possible.
Drivewithforesight Anticipating the road situation and adopting asmooth driving style will reduce fuel consumpj
tion.
Avoid accelerating and braking unnecessarily. Keep an appropriate distance from the precedjing vehicle.Seite 199SavingfuelDrivinghints199

Avoidhighenginespeeds
Driving at low engine speeds lowers fuel conj
sumption and wear.
Pay attention to the shift point indicator, see page 110, in the vehicle, if fitted.
Makeuseofoverrunmode
When approaching a red traffic light, take your foot off the accelerator and allow the vehicle to
roll.
On downward stretches, take your foot off the
accelerator and allow the vehicle to roll.
The fuel supply is interrupted in overrun mode.

Stoppingtheengine
When you stop the vehicle for longer periods, for example at traffic lights, railway crossingsor in traffic jams, switch off the engine.
AutoStartStopfunctionThe Auto Start Stop function of the vehicle
shuts off the engine automatically during a
stop.
If the engine is switched off and then started again, the fuel consumption and emissions arereduced compared with a permanently running
engine. Savings can be made just by stopping
the engine for a few seconds.
Fuel consumption also depends on other facj
tors, such as driving style, road condition, maintenance or environmental factors, for exjample.Switchoffunctionswhich
arenotcurrentlyrequired
Functions such as seat heating or rear window
heating require a great deal of energy and rej
duce the range, especially in city traffic and
stop-and-go traffic.
Switch these functions off if they are not rej
quired.
Havethemaintenancedone Have the vehicle serviced regularly to achieve
optimal economy and lifetime. BMW recomj
mends having maintenance work carried out by a BMW Service Partner.
