Activating/deactivatingthe
systemmanually
Usingthebutton
Press button.
'xLED comes on: auto Start/Stop function is
deactivated.
The engine is started during an automatic enj
gine stop.
The engine can only be stopped or started
via the Start/Stop button.'xLED goes out: auto Start/Stop function is acj tivated.
Switchingoffthevehicleduringan
automaticenginestop
During an automatic engine stop, the vehicle canbe switched off permanently, for instance when
leaving it.
Steptronic transmission:
1.Engage selector lever position P.2.Press the Start/Stop button. The ignition is
switched off. The Auto Start/Stop function is deactivated.3.Set the parking brake.
Engine start as usual via Start/Stop button.
Automaticdeactivation
In certain situations, the Auto Start/Stop function
is deactivated automatically for safety reasons,
for instance if no driver is detected.
Malfunction
The Auto Start/Stop function no longer switches
off the engine automatically. A Check Control
message is displayed. It is possible to continue
driving. Have the system checked by a dealerss service center or another qualified service centeror repair shop.
Parkingbrake
Concept
The parking brake is used to prevent the vehicle from rolling when it is parked.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move and
possibly roll away. There is a risk of an accident.
Before exiting, secure the vehicle against rollj
ing.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, follow the following:
'xSet the parking brake.'xOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the curb.'xOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, for instance with a
wheel chock.
WARNING
Unattended children or animals can cause the
vehicle to move and endanger themselves and
traffic, for instance due to the following actions:
'xPressing the Start/Stop button.'xReleasing the parking brake.'xOpening and closing the doors or winj

'xUsing vehicle equipment.
There is a risk of accidents or injuries. Do not
leave children or animals unattended in the vej hicle. Take the remote control with you when

Setting
Withastationaryvehicle Pull the switch.
The LED lights up.
The indicator light lights up red. The
parking brake is set.
Depending on the stopping situation, the parking brake is engaged automatically.
Steptronic transmission: in some parking situaj
tions, the parking brake is automatically engaged, when selector lever position P is engaged. Inthese cases, the parking brake is released autoj
matically when you leave the selector lever posij tion P.
Whiledriving
To use as emergency brake while driving:
Pull the switch and hold it. The vehicle brakes
hard while the switch is being pulled.
The indicator light lights up red, a signal
sounds and the brake lights light up.
A Check Control message is displayed.
If the vehicle is decelerated to a complete stop,
the parking brake is engaged.

switch while the brake is pressed or selector
lever position P is set.
The LED and indicator light go out.
The parking brake is released.

For automatic release, step on the accelerator
pedal.
The LED and indicator light go out.
The parking brake is automatically released
when you step on the accelerator under the folj
lowing conditions:
'xEngine on.'xDrive mode engaged.'xDriver buckled in and doors closed.
Malfunction
In the event of a failure or malfunction of the
parking brake, secure the vehicle against rolling using a wheel chock, for instance when leaving it.

2. Press the switch while stepping on the
brake pedal or selector lever position P is set.
It may take several seconds for the brake to be put into operation. Any sounds associated with
this are normal.
The indicator light in the instrument clusj
ter goes out as soon as the parking brake
is ready for operation.

When driving and during operation of the turn signals or hazard warning system, do not fold inthe exterior mirrors, so that the signal lights on
the exterior mirror are easy to see.
Usingturnsignals
Press the lever past the resistance point.
Canada: the lever returns into its starting position after actuation. To switch off manually, slightly
tap the lever to the resistance point.
Tripleturnsignalactivation Lightly tap the lever up or down.
The turn signal flashes three times.
The function can be activated or deactivated.

Settings are stored for the profile currently used.
Signalingbriefly
Press the lever to the resistance point and hold it there for as long as you want the turn signal to
flash.
Malfunction
Unusually rapid flashing of the indicator light indij
cates that a turn signal bulb has failed.

Do not use the wipers if the windshield is dry, as

Concept
The rain sensor automatically controls the time between wipes depending on the intensity of the rainfall.
Generalinformation The sensor is located on the windshield, directly
in front of the interior mirror. Without the rain
sensor, the frequency of the wiper operation is preset.
Safetyinformation
NOTE
If the rain sensor is activated, the wipers can
accidentally start moving in vehicle washes. There is a risk of damage to property. Deactij
vate the rain sensor in vehicle washes.

Press the lever up once from its standard posijtion, arrow 1.
Wiping is started.
The LED in the wiper lever is illuminated.
If wipers are frozen to windshield, wiper operaj
tion is deactivated.
Deactivating
Press the lever back into the standard position.

Turn the thumbwheel to adjust the frequency orsensitivity of the rain sensor.
Up: short interval or high sensitivity of the rain
sensor.
Down: long interval or low sensitivity of the rain
sensor.

Safetyinformation
WARNING
The washer fluid can freeze onto the window at
low temperatures and obstruct the view. There
is a risk of an accident. Only use the washer
systems, if the washer fluid cannot freeze. Use
antifreeze, if needed.
NOTE
When the washer fluid reservoir is empty, the
wash pump cannot work as intended. There is a risk of damage to property. Do not use the
washer system when the washer fluid reservoir
is empty.
Cleaningthewindshield
Pull the lever.
The system sprays washer fluid on the windj shield and activates the wipers briefly.
In addition, the headlights are cleaned at regular
intervals when the vehicle's lights are switched
on.
Windshieldwashernozzles
The washer jets are automatically heated whenj
ever the ignition is switched on.

All washer nozzles are supplied from one reserj
voir.
Use a mixture of tap water and windshield washer concentrate. If desired, a windshield
washer concentrate containing antifreeze can be used.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain harmful substances and are flammable. There is a riskof fire and a risk of injury. Follow the instrucj
tions on the containers. Keep antifreeze away from ignition sources. Do not refill operating
materials into different bottles. Store operating
materials out of reach of children.
United States: the washer fluid mixture ratio is
regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individual
states; do not exceed the allowable washer fluid
dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the usage
instructions on the washer fluid container.
Use of BMWss Windshield Washer Concentrate
or the equivalent is recommended.
WARNING
Washer fluid can ignite and catch fire on conj
tact with hot engine parts. There is a risk of inj
jury or risk of damage to property. Only add
washer fluid when the engine is cooled down.
Next, fully close the lid of the washer fluid resj
ervoir.
NOTE
Silicon-containing additives in the washer fluid for the water-repelling effect on the windows can lead to damage to the washing system.
There is a risk of damage to property. Do not add silicon-containing additives to the washerfluid.
