brake pedal until you are ready to start.

In some situations, the vehicle is to roll without
its own power for a short distance, for instance in
a vehicle wash, or be pushed.

1.Switch on the ignition.2.If necessary, release the parking brake.3.Depress the brake pedal.4.Touch the selector lever lock and engage sej
lector lever position N.5.Release brake.
The vehicle may roll.
If there is a malfunction, you may not be able to
change the selector lever position.
Manually unlock the transmission lock, if needed,
refer to page 126.

1.Start the engine while pressing on the brake

In this way, the ignition remains switched on,
and a Check-Control message is displayed.
The vehicle may roll.
NOTE
Selector lever position P is automatically enj
gaged when the ignition is switched off. There
is a risk of damage to property. Do not switch
drive-ready state off in vehicle washes.
Irrespective of the ignition, the selector lever poj
sition P is automatically engaged after approx.
15 minutes.
If there is a malfunction, you may not be able to
change the selector lever position.
Electronically unlock the transmission lock, if
needed, refer to page 127.
Kickdown Kickdown is used to achieve maximum driving
performance.
Step on the accelerator pedal beyond the resistj ance point at the full throttle position.
SportprogramM/S Concept
The shifting points and shifting times in the
Sport program are designed for a sportier driving style. The transmission, for instance shifts up
later and the shifting times are shorter.

Concept
Manual gear-shifting is possible in manual mode.
Activatingmanualmode
1.Press the selector lever to the left out of sej
lector lever position D, arrow 1.2.Push the selector lever forward or pull it
backward, arrows 2.
Manual mode becomes active and the gear is
changed.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instrument
cluster, for instance M1.
Shifting'xTo shift down: press the selector lever forj ward.'xTo shift up: pull the selector lever rearwards.
The transmission continues shifting automatij
cally in certain situations, for instance when
speed limits are reached.
With a tap-operated selector lever: when M2 is set manually while the vehicle is stationary, the
transmission will no longer shift back to M1. This
shifting behavior is retained until you engage M1
manually or exit M.

The Steptronic Sport transmission does not auj
tomatically upshift in M/S manual mode once the maximum speed is reached, if one of the followjing conditions is met:
'xDSC Dynamic Stability Control deactivated.'xDynamic Traction Control DTC activated.
In addition, there is no downshifting for kickjdown.
With the appropriate transmission version, the
lowest possible gear can be selected by simultaj
neously activating kickdown and operating the
left shift paddles. This is not possible by switchj
ing briefly via the shift paddles from selector
lever position D to manual mode M/S.

Push the selector lever to the right.

Shiftpaddles
Concept
The shift paddles on the steering wheel allow
you to shift gears quickly while keeping both
hands on the steering wheel.
Generalinformation Shifting
The vehicle only shifts at suitable engine and
road speeds.
Short-termmanualmode
In selector lever position D, actuating a shift padj
dle switches into manual mode temporarily.
After conservative driving in manual mode withj
out acceleration or shifting via the shift paddles
for a certain amount of time, the transmission
switches back to automatic mode.
It is possible to switch into automatic mode as
follows:'xPull and hold right shift paddle.'xIn addition to the briefly pulled right shift padj dle, briefly pull the left shift paddle.
Continuousmanualmode
In selector lever position S, actuating a shift padj dle switches into manual mode permanently.
Shifting
'xTo shift up: briefly pull right shift paddle.'xTo shift down: briefly pull left shift paddle.'xThe lowest possible gear can be selected by pulling and holding the left shift paddle.
The selected gear is briefly displayed in the inj
strument cluster, followed by the current gear.

If the selector lever is locked in selector lever poj
sition P despite the ignition being switched on, the brake pedal being depressed and the button

set the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from
rolling away.

Electronically unlock the transmission lock to maneuver vehicle from a danger area.
Before unlocking the transmission lock, set the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling
away.

Unlocking is possible, if the starter can spin the
engine.
1.Press and hold down brake pedal.2.Press the Start/Stop button. The starter must audibly start.3.Press the button on the selector lever, arj
row 1, and press and hold the selector lever into selector lever position N, arrow N, untilselector lever position N is displayed in the injstrument cluster.
A Check Control message is displayed.4.Release the selector lever.5.Release brake, as soon as the starter stops.6.Maneuver the vehicle from the danger area
and secure it against moving on its own.

LaunchControl
Concept
Launch Control enables optimum acceleration on surfaces with good traction under dry surj
rounding conditions.
Generalinformation The use of Launch Control causes premature
component wear since this function represents a
very heavy load for the vehicle.
Do not use Launch Control during the break-in,
refer to page 224, period.
To start with Launch Control, point the front
wheels straight forwards.
Functionalrequirements Launch Control is available as soon as the engineand transmission are at operating temperature.
Depending on the external temperature and drivj
ing style, the engine and transmission require an
interrupted trip of up to 30 miles/50 km in order

to reach the operating temperature needed for
Launch Control.
StartwithlaunchcontrolWhile the engine is running:1. Press the button and select SPORT
with the Driving Dynamics Control.
TRACTION is displayed in the instrument cluster in combination with SPORT and the
DSC OFF indicator light lights up.2.Engage selector lever position S.3.With the left foot, forcefully press down on
the brake.4.Press and hold down the accelerator pedal
beyond the resistance point at the full throttle
position, kickdown.
A flag symbol is displayed in the instrument
cluster.5.The starting engine speed adjusts. Within 3 seconds, release the brake.
Repeateduseduringatrip
After Launch Control has been used, the transj mission must cool down for approx. 5 minutesbefore Launch Control can be used again.
AfterusingLaunchControl
To increase vehicle stability, activate DSC Dyj namic Stability Control again.
Systemlimits An experienced driver may be able to achieve
better acceleration values in DSC OFF mode.

CheckControl
Concept
The Check Control system monitors functions in
the vehicle and notifies you of malfunctions in the monitored systems.
Generalinformation
A Check Control message is displayed as a comj
bination of indicator or warning lights and SMS text messages in the instrument cluster and in
the Head-up Display.
In addition, an acoustic signal may sound and an SMS text message may appear on the ControlDisplay.
Indicator/warninglights Generalinformation The indicator/warning lights in the instrument
cluster can light up in a variety of combinations
and colors.
Several of the lights are checked for proper funcj
tioning and light up temporarily when the engine
is started or the ignition is switched on.
Redlights Safetybeltreminder Safety belt on the driver's side is not
buckled. For some country versions: pasj
senger belt is not worn or objects are dej
tected on the front passenger seat.
Indicator light flashes or is illuminated: safety belt on the driver or passenger side is not buckled.
The safety belt reminder can also be activated if objects are placed on the front passenger seat.
Make sure that the safety belts are positionedcorrectly.
Airbagsystem
Airbag system and belt tensioner are not
working.
Have the vehicle checked immediately
by a dealerss service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.
Parkingbrake The parking brake is set.
Release the parking brake, refer to page 112.
Brakesystem Braking system impaired. Continue to
drive moderately.
Have the vehicle checked immediately by a dealerss service center or anotherqualified service center or repair shop.
Approachcontrolwarning Indicator light illuminates: advance warnj
ing is issued, for example when there is
the impending danger of a collision or
the distance to the vehicle ahead is too small.
Increase distance.
Indicator light flashes: acute warning of the immij nent danger of a collision when the vehicle apjproaches another vehicle at a relatively high difj
ferential speed.
Intervention by braking or make an evasive maj
neuver.
Personwarning Symbol in the instrument cluster.
If a collision with a person detected in
this way is imminent, the symbol lights
