Detection
range
The detection capacity of the system and the
automatic braking capacity are limited.
Two-wheeled vehicles for instance might not be
detected.
Deceleration The system does not decelerate in the followingsituations:
'xFor pedestrians, cyclists or similarly slow- moving road users.'xFor red traffic lights.'xFor cross traffic.'xFor oncoming traffic.'xUnlit vehicles or vehicles with nonworkinglighting at night.Swerving
vehicles
A vehicle driving in front of you is not detected
until it is completely within the same lane as your vehicle.
If a vehicle driving ahead of you suddenly swerves into your lane, the system may not be
able to automatically restore the selected disj
tance. It may not be possible to restore the sej lected distance in certain situations, including if
you are driving significantly faster than vehicles driving ahead of you, for instance when rapidly
approaching a truck. When a vehicle driving
ahead of you is reliably detected, the system rej
quests that the driver intervene by braking and
carrying out evasive maneuvers, if needed.
Cornering
If the desired speed is too high for a curve, the
speed is reduced slightly, although curves canj
not be anticipated in advance. Therefore, drive
into a curve at an appropriate speed.
The system has a limited detection range. Situaj tions can arise in tight curves where a vehicledriving ahead will not be detected or will be dej
tected very late.

When you approach a curve the system may
briefly report vehicles in the next lane due to the bend of the curve. If the system decelerates youmay compensate it by briefly accelerating. After
releasing the accelerator pedal the system is rej
activated and controls speed independently.
Driving
away In some situations, the vehicle cannot drive off
automatically; for example:
'xOn steep uphill grades.'xFrom bumps in the road.
In these cases, press on the accelerator pedal.
Weather
The following restrictions can occur under unfavj orable weather or light conditions:
'xPoorer vehicle recognition.'xShort-term interruptions for vehicles that are
already recognized.
Examples of unfavorable weather or light condij tions:
'xWet conditions.'xSnowfall.'xSlush.'xFog.'xGlare.
Drive attentively, and react to the current trafficsituation. If necessary, intervene actively, for inj
stance by braking, steering or evading.
Engine
power
The desired speed may not be maintained on
uphill grades if engine power is insufficient.
Malfunction A Check Control message is displayed if the sysj
tem fails or was automatically deactivated.
The system may not be fully functional in the foljlowing situations:'xWhen an object was not correctly detected.'xIn heavy fog, rain, sprayed water or snowfall.'xIn tight curves.'xIf the field of view of the camera or the windjshield are dirty or covered.'xWhen driving toward bright lights.'xUp to 20 seconds after the start of the enj
gine, via the Start/Stop button.'xDuring calibration of the camera immediately
after vehicle delivery.
Cruise
control
Concept
Using this system, a desired speed can be adj justed using the buttons on the steering wheel. The system maintains the desired speed. The
system accelerates and brakes automatically as
needed.
General
informationDepending on the driving settings, the features
of the cruise control can change in certain areas.

Setting

speed
Maintaining/storing

Press the rocker switch up or down once whilethe system is interrupted.
When the system is switched on, the current
speed is maintained and stored as the desired
speed.
The stored speed is displayed in the speedomej ter and in the instrument cluster, refer to
page 186.
DSC Dynamic Stability Control is switched on, if necessary.
The speed can also be stored by pressing a butj
ton.

Changing
the
speed
Press the rocker switch up or down repeatedlyuntil the desired speed is set.
If active, the displayed speed is stored and the
vehicle reaches the stored speed when the road is clear.
'xEach time the rocker switch is pressed to thepoint of resistance, the desired speed injcreases or decreases by approx.
1 mph/1 km/h.'xEach time the rocker switch is pressed past
the point of resistance, the desired speed inj creases or decreases by a maximum of5 mph/10 km/h.'xPressing the rocker switch to the resistance
point and holding it accelerates or decelerj
ates the vehicle without requiring pressure on
the accelerator pedal.
After the rocker switch is released, the vehij cle maintains its final speed. Pressing the
switch beyond the resistance point causes
the vehicle to accelerate more rapidly.
Continuing
cruise
control
General
information An interrupted cruise control can be continued
by calling up the stored speed.
Make sure that the difference between current
speed and stored speed is not too large before
calling up the stored speed. Otherwise, unintenj tional braking or accelerating may occur.
In the following cases, the stored speed value is
deleted and cannot be called up again:

Control
Concept
PDC is a support when parking. The system dej
tects objects behind the vehicle. If the vehicle is
equipped with front PDC, objects in front of the
vehicle are detected too. Objects that you are
approaching slowly are indicated by signal tones and a display on the Control Display.
General
information
The ultrasound sensors for measuring the disj
tances are located in the bumpers.
The maneuvering range, depending on the obj
stacle and environmental conditions, is approx. 6 ft/2 m.
An acoustic warning is first given in the following situations:
'xBy the front sensors and the two rear corner
sensors at approx. 24 in/60 cm from the obj ject.'xBy the rear middle sensors at a distance tothe object of approx. 5 ft/1.50 m.'xWhen a collision is imminent.

The rearview camera image is displayed if the rej
verse gear is engaged when pressing the park assistance button.
WARNING
Signal
tones An intermittent tone indicates when the vehicleis approaching an object. E.g., if an object is dej tected to the left rear of the vehicle, a signal tonesounds from the left rear speaker.
The shorter the distance to the object, the shorter the intervals.
If the distance to a detected object is less than
approx. 10 inches/25 cm, a continuous tone is
sounded.
With front PDC: if objects are simultaneously loj
cated both in front of and behind the vehicle, an alternating continuous signal is sounded.
The signal tone is switched off, when selector lever position P is engaged on vehicles with
Steptronic transmission.
Volume The ratio of the PDC signal tone volume to theentertainment volume can be adjusted.

Visual
warning
The approach of the vehicle to an object is shown on the Control Display. Objects that are

vehicles.'xWith thin or wedge-shaped objects.'xWith moving objects.'xWith elevated, protruding objects such as ledges or cargo.'xWith objects with corners and sharp edges.'xWith objects with a fine surface structure

curbs, can move into the blind area of the sensors before or after a continuous tonesounds.
False
warnings
The system may issue a warning under the folj
lowing conditions even though there is no obstaj
cle within the detection range:
'xIn heavy rain.'xWhen sensors are very dirty or covered with
ice.'xWhen sensors are covered in snow.'xOn rough road surfaces.'xOn uneven surfaces, such as speed bumps.'xIn large buildings with right angles and smooth walls, for instance in underground gaj
rages.'xIn automatic vehicle washes.'xDue to heavy exhaust.'xDue to other ultrasound sources, for instance sweeping machines, high pressure steam
cleaners or neon lights.
The malfunction is signaled by a continuous tone
alternating between the front and rear speakers.
As soon as the malfunction due to other ultraj
sound sources is no longer present, the system is again fully functional.
If necessary, switch off automatic PDC activation
on obstacle detection, for instance in vehicle
washes, to reduce false alarms.
Malfunction
A Check Control message is displayed. The range of the sensors is shown as a shadedarea on the Control Display.
PDC has failed. Have the system checked by a dealerss service center or another qualified servj
ice center or repair shop.
Rearview
camera
Concept
The rearview camera provides assistance in
parking and maneuvering backwards. The area
behind the vehicle is shown on the Control Disj
play.
