Closing
WARNING
The retaining strap of the fuel cap can be jamj
med and crushed during closing. The cap canj not be correctly closed. Fuel or fuel vapors can
escape. There is a risk of injury or risk of damj
age to property. Pay attention that the retaining
strap is not jammed or crushed when closing
the cap.
1.Fit the cap and turn it clockwise until you
clearly hear a click.2.Close the fuel filler flap.

General
information When refueling, insert the filler nozzle completelyinto the filler pipe. Lifting up the fuel pump nozzle
during refueling causes:
'xPremature switching off.'xReduced return of the fuel vapors.
The fuel tank is full when the filler nozzle clicks
off the first time.
Make sure that the fuel cap is closed properly afj ter refueling, otherwise the emissions warning
light may light up.
Follow safety regulations posted at the gas staj
tion.

Fuels are toxic and aggressive. Overfilling of the fuel tank can damage the fuel system. Painted
surfaces may be damaged by contact with fuel.
Escaping fuel can harm the environment. There

Fuel
recommendation
General
information Depending on the region, many gas stations sellfuel that has been customized to winter orsummer conditions. Fuel that is available in winjter, for instance helps make a cold start easier.
Gasoline General
information
For the best fuel efficiency, the gasoline should
be sulfur-free or very low in sulfur content.
Fuels that are marked on the gas pump as conj
taining metal must not be used.
Fuels with a maximum ethanol content of 25 %,
i. e. E10 or E25, may be used for refueling.
Ethanol should meet the following quality stanjdards:
US: ASTM 4806mxx
CAN: CGSB-3.511mxx
xx: comply with the current standard in each
case.

Do not press the Start/Stop button after refuelj

Fuel that does not comply with the minimum quality can compromise engine function or

CAUTION
The use of poor-quality fuels may result in
harmful engine deposits or damage. Additionj
ally, problems relating to drivability, starting and stalling, especially under certain environmentalconditions such as high ambient temperature
and high altitude, may occur.
If drivability problems are encountered, we recj
ommend switching to a high quality gasoline
brand and a higher octane grade n AKI numj
ber n for a few tank fills. To avoid harmful enj
gine deposits, it is highly recommended to purj
chase gasoline from Top Tier retailers.
Failure to comply with these recommendations
may result in the need for unscheduled maintej
nance.

Minimum
fuel
grade
BMW recommends AKI 89.
If you use gasoline with this minimum AKI Rating,
the engine may produce knocking sounds when
starting at high external temperatures. This has
no effect on the engine life.

A tire with too little or no tire inflation pressure
may heat up significantly and sustain damage.
This will have a negative impact on aspects of handling, such as steering and braking rej
sponse. There is a risk of an accident. Regularly
check the tire inflation pressure, and correct it as needed, for instance twice a month and bej
fore a long trip.

ambient temperature. The tire inflation pressure

To identify the correct tire inflation pressure,

information
Tires heat up while driving. The tire inflation
pressure increases with the tire temperature.
Tires have a natural, consistent loss of tire inflajtion pressure.
The displays of inflation devices may under-read
by up to 0.1 bar/2 psi.
Checking

in
the
tire
inflation
pressure
table
The tire inflation pressure specifications in the tire inflation pressure table only relate to cold
tires or tires at the same temperature as the amj bient temperature.
Only check the tire inflation pressure levels when
the tires are cold, i.e.:
'xDriving range of max. 1.25 miles/2 km has not

Also check the tire inflation pressure of the
emergency wheel in the cargo area regularly, and
correct it as needed.1.Determine, refer to page 244, the intended
tire inflation pressure levels for the mounted
tires.2.Check the tire inflation pressure in all four
tires, using a pressure gage, for example.3.Correct the tire inflation pressure if the curj
rent tire inflation pressure value deviates from the specified value.4.Check whether all valve caps are screwed
onto the tire valves.

Run-flat tires, refer to page 251, are labeled with
a circular symbol containing the letters RSC marked on the sidewall.

Winter and all-season tires with better cold
weather performance than summer tires.

Summer
tires
Do not drive with a tire tread of less than
0.12 in/3 mm, otherwise there is an increased
risk of hydroplaning.
Winter
tires Do not drive with a tire tread of less than
0.16 in/4 mm, as such tires are less suitable for
winter operation.
Minimum

depth
Wear indicators are distributed around the tire's
circumference and have the legally required minj imum height of 0.063 inches/1.6 mm.
The positions of the wear indicators are marked on the tire sidewall with TWI, Tread Wear Indicaj
tor.
Tire
damage
General
information Inspect your tires regularly for damage, foreign
objects lodged in the tread, and tread wear.
Driving over rough or damaged road surfaces, as
well as debris, curbs and other obstacles can
cause serious damage to wheels, tires and susj
pension parts. This is more likely to occur with
low-profile tires, which provide less cushioning
between the wheel and the road. Be careful to
avoid road hazards and reduce your speed, esj
pecially if your vehicle is equipped with low-proj file tires.
Indications of tire damage or other vehicle malj
functions:

to pull to the left or right.

which can lead to loss of vehicle control. There is a risk of an accident. If tire damage is susj
pected while driving, immediately reduce speed
and stop. Have wheels and tires checked. For
this purpose, drive carefully to the nearest dealj erss service center or another qualified service
center or repair shop. Have vehicle towed or
transported as needed. Do not repair damaged
tires, but have them replaced.
WARNING
Tires can become damaged by driving over obj
stacles, e.g., curbs or road damage, at high
speed. Larger wheels have a smaller tire cross- section. The smaller the tire cross-section, the
higher the risk of tire damage. There is a danj
ger of accidents and property damage. If possij
ble, drive around obstacles, or drive over them
slowly and carefully.

negative impact on the vehicle's handling and
on the function of a variety of systems, such as
ABS or DSC. There is a risk of an accident. To
maintain good handling and vehicle response, use only tires with a single tread configuration

Recommended
tire
brands
For each tire size, the manufacturer of the vehijcle recommends certain tire brands. The tire
brands can be identified by a star on the tire
sidewall.
New
tires Tire traction is not optimal due to manufacturing
circumstances when tires are brand-new; they achieve their full traction potential after a break-intime.
Drive conservatively for the first
200 miles/300 km.
Retreaded
tires
WARNING
Retreaded tires can have different tire casing
structures. With advanced age the service life
can be limited. There is a risk of an accident.
The manufacturer of your vehicle does not recj
ommend the use of retreaded tires.

Winter
tires Winter tires are recommended for operating on
winter roads.
Although so-called all-season M+S tires provide better winter traction than summer tires, they
usually do not provide the same level of performj ance as winter tires.
Maximum
speed

tires
If the maximum speed of the vehicle is higher
than the permissible speed for the winter tires,
then attach a label showing the permissible maxij mum speed in the field of view. The label is availjable from a dealerss service center or anotherqualified service center or repair shop.
With winter tires mounted, observe and do not
exceed the permissible maximum speed.
Run-flat
tires
If you are already using run-flat tires, for your own
safety you should replace them only with the same kind. No spare tire is available in the caseof a flat tire. Further information is available froma dealerss service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.
Rotating
wheels
between
axles
Different wear patterns can occur on the front
and rear axles depending on individual driving
conditions. The tires can be rotated in pairs bej
tween the axles to achieve even wear. Further inj
formation is available from a dealerss service cenj ter or another qualified service center or repairshop. After rotating, check the tire pressure and
correct, if needed.
