MaintenanceVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country-spejcific and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that are not necessarilyavailable in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selectedoptions or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
BMWmaintenancesystem
The maintenance system indicates required maintenance measures, and thereby providessupport in maintaining road safety and the operajtional reliability of the vehicle.
In some cases, scopes and intervals of the mainj
tenance system may vary according to the counj try version. Replacement work, spare parts, fuels
and lubricants, and wear materials are calculated
separately. Further information is available from a
dealerss service center or another qualified servj
ice center or repair shop.
ConditionBasedServiceCBS
Concept
Sensors and special algorithms take into account the driving conditions of the vehicle. CBS uses
these to calculate the need for maintenance.
The system makes it possible to adapt the
amount of maintenance corresponding to your
user profile.
Generalinformation
Information on service requirements, refer to
page 135, can be displayed on the Control Disj
play.
Servicedataintheremote
control
Information on the required maintenance is conjtinuously stored in the remote control. The dealjerss service center can read this data out and
suggest a maintenance scope for the vehicle.
Therefore, hand the service advisor the remote
control with which the vehicle was driven most recently.
Storageperiods Storage periods during which the vehicle battery
was disconnected are not taken into account.
If this occurs, have a dealer's service center or
another qualified service center or repair shop update the time-dependent maintenance procejdures, such as checking brake fluid and, if necesj
sary, changing the engine oil and the microfilter/ activated-charcoal filter.

SocketforOBDOnboard Diagnosis
Generalinformation
Devices connected at the OBD socket trigger
the alarm system when the vehicle is locked. Rej move any devices connected at the OBD socket
before locking the vehicle.
Safetyinformation
NOTE
The socket for Onboard Diagnosis is an intrij
cate component intended to be used in conj
junction with specialized equipment to check
the vehicless primary emissions system. Imj
proper use of the socket for Onboard Diagnoj
sis, or contact with the socket for Onboard Dij
agnosis for other than its intended purpose,
can cause vehicle malfunctions and creates
risks of personal and property damage. Given
the foregoing, the manufacture of your vehicle
strongly recommends that access to the socket
for Onboard Diagnosis be limited to a dealer's
service center or another qualified service cenj
ter or repair shop or other persons that have
the specialized training and equipment for purj
poses of properly utilizing the socket for Onj
board Diagnosis.
Position
There is an OBD socket on the driver's side for checking the primary components in the vehij
cle's emissions.
Emissions
'xThe warning light lights up:
Emissions are deteriorating. Have the vehicle checked as soon as possible.'xThe warning light flashes under certain cirj
cumstances:
This indicates that there is excessive misfiring in the engine.
Reduce the vehicle speed and have the sysj
tem checked immediately; otherwise, serious
engine misfiring within a brief period can serij
ously damage emission control components, in particular the catalytic converter.Seite 272MOBILITYMaintenance272

Generalinformation
Lightsandbulbs
Lights and bulbs make an essential contribution
to vehicle safety.
The vehicle manufacturer recommends that you have the relevant work carried out a dealerss service center or another qualified service centeror repair shop.
A spare light box is available from a dealerss servj ice center or another qualified service center or repair shop.
Follow the safety information, refer to page 274.
Light-emittingdiodes(LEDs) Some items of equipment use light-emitting dijodes installed behind a cover as a light source.
These light-emitting diodes are related to conj
ventional lasers and are officially designated as Class 1 light-emitting diodes.
Follow the safety information, refer to page 274.
Safetyinformation
Lightsandbulbs
WARNING
Bulbs can get hot during operation. Contact with the bulbs can cause burns. There is a risk of injury. Only change bulbs after they have
cooled off.
WARNING
Work on switched-on lighting systems can
cause short circuits. There is a risk of injury or
risk of damage to property. When working on the lighting system, switch off the lights inquestion. If necessary, heed the bulb manufacj
turer's instructions.
NOTE
Dirty bulbs have a reduced service life. There is a risk of damage to property. Do not hold newbulbs with your bare hands. Use a clean clothor something similar, or hold the bulb by its
base.
Light-emittingdiodes(LEDs)
WARNING
Intensive brightness can irritate or damage the
retina of the eye. There is a risk of injury. Do not look directly into the headlights or other light
sources. Do not remove the LED covers.

service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.
Vehiclebattery
Maintenance The battery is maintenance-free.
The added amount of acid is sufficient for the
service life of the battery.
More information about the battery can be rej
quested from a dealerss service center or another
qualified service center or repair shop.
Replacingthevehiclebattery
Generalinformation The manufacturer of your vehicle recommends
that you have a dealerss service center or another qualified service center or repair shop register
the vehicle battery to the vehicle after the battery
has been replaced. Once the battery has been
registered again, all comfort features will be availj
able without restriction and any Check Control
messages displayed which relate to comfort feaj
tures will disappear.
Safetyinformation
NOTE
Vehicle batteries that are not compatible can damage vehicle systems and impair vehicle
functions. There is a risk of personal and propj erty damage. Only vehicle batteries that arecompatible with your vehicle type should be inj
stalled in your vehicle. Information on compatij ble vehicle batteries is available at your dealerss
service center.
Chargingthebattery
Generalinformation Make sure that the battery is always sufficiently
charged to guarantee that the battery remains usable for its full service life.
A discharged battery is indicated by a red
indicator light.
The battery may need to be charged in the folj lowing cases:'xWhen making frequent short-distance drives.'xIf the vehicle is not used for more than a
month.'xSteptronic transmission: when parked for
long periods of time in selector lever position D, R or N.
Safetyinformation
NOTE
Battery chargers for the vehicle battery can
work with high voltages and currents, which
means that the 12 volt on-board network can be overloaded or damaged. There is a risk of
damage to property. Only connect battery
chargers for the vehicle battery to the starting
aid terminals in the engine compartment.
Startingaidterminals
In the vehicle, only charge the battery via the
starting aid terminals, refer to page 284, in the
engine compartment with the engine off.
PowerfailureAfter a power loss, some equipment needs to be
newly initialized or individual settings updated, for
example:
