Selector lever position for normal vehicle operj
ation. All gears for forward travel are activated
automatically.
ReverseR Engage selector lever position R only when the
vehicle is stationary.
NeutralN
The vehicle may be pushed or roll without
power, for instance in vehicle washes, refer to
page 112, in selector lever position N.
ParkingpositionP Selector lever position, for instance for parkingthe vehicle. The transmission blocks the drivewheels in selector lever position P.
Engage selector lever position P only when the
vehicle is stationary.
Selector lever position P is engaged automatij
cally in situations such as the following:'yAfter the drive-ready state is switched off
and selector lever position R, D or M/S is engaged.'yIf the driver's safety belt is unbuckled, the
driver's door is opened, and the brake pedal is not pressed while the vehicle is
stationary and selector lever position D,
M/S or R is engaged.'yAfter the standby state has been switched off when selector lever position N is enj
gaged.

To prevent the vehicle from creeping after you
select a drive mode, maintain pressure on the
brake pedal until you are ready to start.
Functionalrequirements
Only when the drive-ready state is switched on and the brake pedal is depressed is it possible
to change from selector lever position P to anj
other selector lever position.

A selector lever lock prevents the following
faulty operation:'yUnintentional shifting into selector lever position R.'yUnintentional shifting from selector lever

tion.1.Press and hold the button to release the
selector lever lock.2.With the driver's safety belt fastened,
briefly push the selector lever in the dej sired direction, past a resistance point, if

In some situations, the vehicle is to roll without
its own power for a short distance, for instance
in a vehicle wash, or be pushed.

1.Switch on drive-ready state while pressing
on the brake pedal.2.If necessary, release the parking brake.3.If necessary, switch off Automatic Hold, rej
fer to page 104.4.Depress the brake pedal.5.Touch the selector lever lock and engage

In this way, standby state remains switched on, and a Check Control mesj
sage is displayed.
The vehicle may roll.
NOTE
Selector lever position P is automatically
engaged when standby state is switched off.
There is a risk of damage to property. Do not switch standby state off in vehicle washes.'

Concept
Manual gear-shifting is possible in manual mode.
Activatingmanualmode1.Press the selector lever to the left out ofselector lever position D, arrow 1.2.Push the selector lever forward or pull itbackward, arrows 2.
Manual mode becomes active and the gear is
changed.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instruj
ment cluster, for instance M1.
Shifting
'yTo shift down: press the selector lever forjward.'yTo shift up: pull the selector lever rearjwards.
The transmission continues shifting automatijcally in certain situations, for instance when
speed limits are reached.

If driving mode SPORT, refer to page 116, is
selected, the Steptronic Sport transmission
does not automatically upshift in M/S manual
mode once the maximum speed is reached.
Depending on the BMW M drive configuration, this function is active independently of the
driving mode.
In addition, there is no downshifting for kickj
down.
Endingthemanualmode Push the selector lever to the right.
D is displayed in the instrument cluster.
Shiftpaddles
Concept The shift paddles on the steering wheel allow
you to shift gears quickly while keeping both hands on the steering wheel.
Generalinformation Shifting
The vehicle only shifts at suitable engine and
road speeds.
Short-termmanualmode
In selector lever position D, actuating a shift paddle switches into manual mode temporajrily.
After conservative driving in manual mode without acceleration or shifting via the shift
paddles for a certain amount of time, the transj
mission switches back to automatic mode.
It is possible to switch into automatic mode asfollows:'yPull and hold right shift paddle.'yIn addition to the briefly pulled right shiftpaddle, briefly pull the left shift paddle.
Continuousmanualmode
In selector lever position S, actuating a shift paddle switches into manual mode permaj
nently.

SteptronicSporttransmission
With the appropriate transmission version, the
lowest possible gear can be selected by simulj
taneously activating kickdown and operating
the left shift paddles. This is not possible in
short-term manual mode.
Shifting'yTo shift up: briefly pull right shift paddle.'yTo shift down: briefly pull left shift paddle.'yThe lowest possible gear can be selected
by pulling and holding the left shift paddle.
The selected gear is briefly displayed in the inj
strument cluster, followed by the current gear.

Generalinformation
Electronically unlock the transmission lock to
maneuver vehicle from a danger area.
Unlocking is possible, if the starter can spin the
engine.
Before unlocking the transmission lock, set the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rollj
ing away.
EngagingselectorleverpositionN1.Press and hold down brake pedal.2.Press the Start/Stop button. The starter
must audibly start. Hold the Start/Stop butj
ton pressed.3.With your free hand, press the button on
the selector lever, arrow 1, and press the
selector lever into selector lever position N

tion N is displayed in the instrument clusj
ter.
A Check Control message is displayed.4.Release Start/Stop button and selector lever.5.Release brake, as soon as the starterstops.6.Maneuver the vehicle from the danger areaand secure it against moving on its own.

LaunchControl
Concept
Launch Control enables optimum acceleration on surfaces with good traction under dry surjrounding conditions.
Generalinformation
The use of Launch Control causes premature
component wear since this function represents a very heavy load for the vehicle.
Do not use Launch Control during the break-in, refer to page 242, period.

Do not steer the steering wheel when drivingoff with Launch Control.
Functionalrequirements
Launch Control is available when the engine is
at operating temperature. The engine is at opj erating temperature after an uninterrupted trip
of at least 6 miles/10 km.
Startwithlaunchcontrol1.Switch on drive-ready state.2. Press button.
TRACTION is displayed in the instrument
cluster and the indicator light for DSC OFF
lights up.3.Engage selector lever position S.4.With the left foot, forcefully press down on
the brake.5.Press and hold down the accelerator pedal
beyond the resistance point at the full
throttle position, kickdown.
A flag symbol is displayed in the instruj
ment cluster.6.The starting engine speed adjusts. Within
3 seconds, release the brake.
Repeateduseduringatrip
After Launch Control has been used, the transj
mission must cool down for approx. 5 minutes before Launch Control can be used again.Launch Control adjusts to the surroundingconditions, when used again.
AfterusingLaunchControl
To increase vehicle stability, activate DSC Dyj
namic Stability Control again as soon as possij ble.
Systemlimits
An experienced driver may be able to achieve better acceleration values in DSC OFF mode.

The Driving Dynamics Control influences the
driving dynamics properties of the vehicle. The vehicle can be adjusted depending on the sitjuation using various driving modes.

CheckControl
Concept
The Check Control system monitors functions
in the vehicle and notifies you of malfunctions
in the monitored systems.
Generalinformation
A Check Control message is displayed as a
combination of indicator or warning lights and
SMS text messages in the instrument cluster
and, if applicable, in the Head-up Display.
In addition, an acoustic signal may sound and an SMS text message may appear on the Conjtrol Display.
Indicator/warninglights
Concept Indicator/warning lights in the instrument clusjter display the status of some functions in the vehicle and indicate when a malfunction ispresent in the monitored systems.
Generalinformation
The indicator/warning lights can light up in a
variety of combinations and colors.
Several of the lights are checked for proper
functioning and light up temporarily when
drive-ready state is switched on.
Redlights Safetybeltreminder Indicator light flashes or is illuminated:
safety belt on the driver or passenger side is not buckled. The safety belt rej
minder can also be activated if objects are
placed on the front passenger seat.
Make sure that the safety belts are positioned
correctly.
Airbagsystem Airbag system and belt tensioner are
not working.
Have the vehicle checked immediately
