Sidecollisionwarning
Concept
The system helps to avoid imminent side collij
sions.
Generalinformation
Four radar sensors in the bumpers monitor thearea next to the vehicle in the speed rangefrom approx. 45 mph/70 km/h to apj
prox. 130 mph/210 km/h.
The front camera determines the lane marking
positions.
If, for instance another vehicle is detected next to the vehicle and if there is a risk of collision
with this vehicle, the system helps avoid the
collision via steering intervention.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess visibility and trafj fic situation. There is a risk of an accident. Adjjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watchtraffic closely and actively intervene where apj
propriate.'

If there is a risk of collision, the light in the exj terior mirror flashes and the steering wheel vij
brates. An active steering intervention takes place to prevent collisions and maintain the vej
hicle within its own lane. The steering intervenj
tion can be noticed on the steering wheel and
can be manually overridden at any time.
Systemlimits
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system can react not at all, too late,
incorrectly, or without justification due to the system limits. There is a risk of accidents or
risk of damage to property. Follow the informaj
tion regarding the system limits and actively intervene, if needed.'

Generalinformation
Two radar sensors in the rear bumper monitor
the area behind the vehicle.
If a vehicle approaches from the rear at a cerj tain speed, the system responds as follows:
'yActive Protection, refer to page 165: if a
collision seems to be unavoidable, Prej Crash functions are triggered.
The system is automatically active after every
driving off.
The system is deactivated in the following sitj
uations:
'yWhen driving in reverse.'yIf the trailer power socket is in use, for inj stance during operation with trailer or bicyj
cle rack.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess visibility and trafj fic situation. There is a risk of an accident. Adjjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watchtraffic closely and actively intervene where apj
propriate.'

Generalinformation'yDuring normal brake application, the outerbrake lights light up.'yDuring heavy brake application, the innerbrake lights additionally light up.
ActiveProtection
Concept
Active Protection prepares occupants and the vehicle for a possible accident in critical driving
or collision situations.
Generalinformation
Active Protection consists of various PreCrash functions, which can vary depending on the
equipment.
The system is used to detect certain critical
driving situations that might lead to an accij
dent. This includes the following critical driving situations:
'yEmergency stop.'ySevere understeering.'ySevere oversteering.
Certain functions of several systems can -
within the system limits - lead to Active Proj
tection triggering:
'yApproach control warning with braking function: automatic brake intervention.'yApproach control warning with brakingfunction: brake booster.'yRear collision prevention: detection of imj
minent rear collisions.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility. Due to the system limits, critical situation could not be detected reliably
or in time. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watch trafficclosely and actively intervene where approprij
ate.'

AtstandstillAfter coming to a halt, the brake is releasedautomatically.
Hardervehiclebraking
It can be necessary to bring the vehicle in cerj
tain situations to a halt quicker.
To do this, for a short time the braking presj
sure applied when stepping on the brake pedal
must be higher than the braking pressure achj
ieved by the automatic braking function. This
interrupts automatic braking.
Interruptingautomaticbraking It can be necessary to interrupt automatic
braking in certain situations, for instance for an evasive maneuver.
Interrupt automatic braking:'yBy pressing the brake pedal.'yBy pressing the accelerator pedal.
Alertnessassistant
Concept
The system can detect decreasing alertness or
fatigue of the driver during long, monotonous
trips, for instance on highways. In this situaj
tion, it is recommended that the driver takes a
break.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess one's physical state. An increasing lack of alertness or fatigue
may not be detected or not be detected in
time. There is a risk of an accident. Make sure
that the driver is rested and alert. Adjust drivj ing style to traffic conditions.'

During the display, the following settings canbe selected:'y"Do not ask again"'y"Places to stop"'y"Remind me later"
The break recommendation is repeated afj
ter 20 minutes.
After a break, another recommendation to take a break cannot be displayed until after approxijmately 45 minutes.
Systemlimits
The function may be limited in the following
situations, for instance and will either output an
incorrect warning or no warning at all:
'yWhen the clock is set incorrectly.'yWhen the vehicle speed is mainly below about 43 mph/70 km/h.'yWith a sporty driving style, such as duringrapid acceleration or when cornering fast.'yIn active driving situations, such as when
changing lanes frequently.'yWhen the road surface is poor.'yIn the event of strong side winds.
The system is reset approx. 45 minutes after
parking the vehicle, for instance in the case of a break during longer trips on highways.

DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem
ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during
braking.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing
active safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant When you apply the brakes rapidly, the system
automatically produces the greatest possible
braking force boost. It reduces the braking disj
tance to a minimum during emergency stop.
This system utilizes all of the benefits provided
by the Antilock Brake System ABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal
for the duration of the emergency stop.
Adaptivebrakeassistant In combination with Active Cruise Control, this
system ensures that the brakes respond even
more rapidly when braking in critical situations.Drive-offassistant
Concept
This system supports driving off on uphill grades.
Drivingaway1.Hold the vehicle in place with the foot
brake.2.Release the foot brake and drive off withj
out delay.
After the foot brake is released, the vehicle is held in place for approx. 2 seconds.
Depending on the vehicle loading or when a
trailer is used, the vehicle may roll back
slightly.
DSCDynamicStability
Control
Concept
Within the physical limits, the system helps to
keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducj ing engine speed and by braking the individualwheels.
Generalinformation
DSC detects the following unstable driving conditions, for instance:
'yFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'yLoss of traction of the front wheels, which
can lead to understeering.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess the traffic situaj tion. Based on the limits of the system, it canj
