Systemlimits
Detectionrange
The detection capacity of the system and the
automatic braking capacity are limited.
Two-wheeled vehicles for instance might not
be detected.
Deceleration
The system does not decelerate in the followj
ing situations:
'yFor pedestrians or similarly slow-moving
road users.'yFor red traffic lights.'yFor cross traffic.'yFor oncoming traffic.Swervingvehicles
A vehicle driving in front of you is not detected until it is completely within the same lane as
your vehicle.
If a vehicle driving ahead of you suddenly
swerves into your lane, the system may not be able to automatically restore the selected disj
tance. It may not be possible to restore the sej
lected distance in certain situations, including if you are driving significantly faster than vehijcles driving ahead of you, for instance when
rapidly approaching a truck. When a vehicle
driving ahead of you is reliably detected, the
system requests that the driver intervene by
braking and carrying out evasive maneuvers, if
needed.
Cornering
If the desired speed is too high for a curve, the
speed is reduced slightly, although curves canj not be anticipated in advance. Therefore, drive
into a curve at an appropriate speed.
The system has a limited detection range. Sitj uations can arise in tight curves where a vehij

cle driving ahead will not be detected or will be
detected very late.
When you approach a curve the system may briefly report vehicles in the next lane due to
the bend of the curve. If the system decelerj
ates you may compensate it by briefly accelerj
ating. After releasing the accelerator pedal the system is reactivated and controls speed indej
pendently.
Drivingaway In some situations, the vehicle cannot drive off
automatically; for example:
'yOn steep uphill grades.'yFrom bumps in the road.'yWith a heavy trailer.
In these cases, step on the accelerator pedal.
Weather
The following restrictions can occur under unj
favorable weather or light conditions:
'yPoorer vehicle recognition.'yShort-term interruptions for vehicles that
are already recognized.
Examples of unfavorable weather or light conj
ditions:
'yWet conditions.'ySnowfall.'ySlush.'yFog.'yGlare.Drive attentively, and react to the current traffic situation. If necessary, intervene actively, for
instance by braking, steering or evading.
Enginepower The desired speed is also maintained downhill. The speed may not be maintained on uphill
grades if the engine power is insufficient.
In ECO PRO driving mode, the vehicle may inj
tentionally exceed or drop below the set dej
sired speed in some situations, for instance on downhill or uphill grades.
Malfunction
The system cannot be activated if the radar sensor is not aligned correctly. This may be
caused by damage incurred, for instance durj ing parking.
A Check Control message is displayed if the
system fails.
Have the system checked by a dealerss service
center or another qualified service center or rej pair shop.
The function for detecting and responding
when approaching stationary vehicles may be limited in the following situations:'yDuring calibration of the camera immedijately after vehicle delivery.'yIf the camera is malfunctioning or dirty. ACheck Control message is displayed.
Steeringandlanecontrol
assistant
Concept
The system assists the driver in keeping the
vehicle within the lane. For this purpose, the system executes supporting steering movej
ments, for instance when driving in a curve.

Generalinformation
The system determines the position of the
lane markings and the vehicle driving ahead
using five radar sensors and a camera.
Depending on the speed, the system orients itj
self according to the lane markings or vehicles
in front.
Sensors on the steering wheel detect whether
the steering wheel is being touched.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess the traffic situaj tion. Based on the limits of the system, it canj
not independently react to all traffic situations.
There is a risk of an accident. Adjust driving
style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic closely
and actively intervene where appropriate.'

'ySignal tones.'yVisual display.
With parking assistant: obstacles on the side ofthe vehicle that are detected by the sensors of the parking assistant, may also be reported bythe side protection function, refer to page 189.
Generalinformation
The ultrasound sensors for distance measurej
ments are located in the bumpers and possibly
on the sides of the vehicle.
The maneuvering range, depending on the obj
stacle and environmental conditions, is approx.
6 ft/2 m.
An acoustic warning sounds in case of an imj pending collision at a distance to the object of approx. 27 in/70 cm.
For objects behind the vehicle, the acoustic warning is already issued at a distance to theobject of approx. 5 ft/1.50 m.

Signaltones Generalinformation
When approaching an object, an intermittent sound indicates the position of the object. E.g.,if an object is detected to the left rear of thevehicle, a signal tone sounds from the left rear
speaker.
The shorter the distance to the object, the shorter the intervals.
If the distance to a detected object is less than
approx. 10 inches/25 cm, a continuous tone is sounded.
If there are objects in front of and behind the vehicle at the same time, with a distance
smaller than approx. 10 in/25 cm, an alternatj ing constant tone will sound.
Steptronic transmission: the intermittent tone and constant tone are switched off if the selecjtor lever position P is engaged.
The intermittent tone is switched off after a short time when the vehicle is stationary.
Volume
The ratio of the PDC signal tone volume to the entertainment volume can be adjusted.

Concept
The emergency braking function of PDC inij tiates an emergency braking in case of acute
risk of collision.
Generalinformation
Due to system limits, a collision cannot be prej vented under all circumstances.
The function is available from walking speedwhile backing up or rolling backward.
A press of the accelerator pedal interrupts the braking intervention.
After emergency braking to a stop, further
creeping toward an obstacle is possible. To
creep toward the obstacle, lightly press the acj
celerator pedal and release it again.
If the accelerator pedal is heavily depressed,
the vehicle drives off as usual. Manual braking
is possible at any time.
The system uses the ultrasound sensors of
PDC and parking assistant.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess the traffic situaj tion. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust drivj
