TrailertowingVehiclefeaturesandoptionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Generalinformation
The permissible trailer loads, axle loads, drawj
bar node weights, and the permissible gross
vehicle weight are specified in the technical
data.
The vehicle is equipped with an enhanced susj
pension system on the rear axle and, dependj
ing on the vehicle type, with a more powerful
cooling system.
Beforedriving DrawbarnoseweightThe maximum load of the tractor is lowered by
the weight of the trailer hitch and the drawbar nose weight. The drawbar nose weight inj
creases the vehicle weight. Do not exceed the approved gross vehicle weight of the towingvehicle.
Loading Distribute cargo as evenly as possible on the
cargo area.
Stow the load as low and close to the trailer axle as possible. A low center of gravity in the trailer increases the driving safety of the entirevehicle-trailer combination.Do not exceed the approved gross vehicle
weight of the trailer and the permissible trailer
load of the vehicle. The smaller value applies in
each case.
Tireinflationpressure Note the tire inflation pressure of the vehicle
and trailer.
For the vehicle, the tire inflation pressure for
higher loads applies.
Information regarding the tire inflation presj
sure, refer to page 268.
For the trailer, the specifications of the manuj facturer apply.
FlatTireMonitorFTM After correcting the tire inflation pressure or
hitching/unhitching a trailer, initialize the runflat
tires, refer to page 288.
TirePressureMonitorTPM After correcting the tire inflation pressure or
hitching/unhitching a trailer, reset the Tire
Pressure Monitor TPM, refer to page 281.
Exteriormirrors Exterior mirrors, which allow the driver to see
both rear corners of the trailer, are available as
special accessories from a dealerss service
center or another qualified service center or rej pair shop.
Powerconsumption
Before starting to drive, check the function of
the trailer tail lights.
The consumption of the trailer tail lights must not exceed the following values:'yTurn signals/brake lights: 54 watts perside.'yRear lights: 100 watts in total.Seite 247TrailertowingDrivingtips247

'yBackup light: 54 watts in total.
Keep the activation times of the electronic sysjtems/power consumers short when towing a
camper to save the vehicle battery power.
Towingatrailer
Generalinformation If the trailer socket is in use, some driver assisj
tance systems are unavailable, or available to a
limited extent. A Check Control message is
displayed where applicable.
When driving with a trailer or load carrier and
the trailer socket not in use, some driver assisj tance systems may have functional limitationsor may malfunction.
To prevent malfunctions, activate trailer towj ing, refer to page 249.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Depending on the design and loading of
trailers, they may begin swinging at speeds exj
ceeding approx. 50 mph/80 km/h. There is a
risk of accidents or risk of damage to property.
Adapt your speed when driving with a trailer.
Immediately brake in the case of swinging. Apj
ply necessary steering corrections as carefully
as possible.'

TrailerstabilizationcontrolConcept
This system supports the driver in stopping the swinging of a trailer.
The trailer stabilization control detects swingj ing and automatically brakes the vehiclequickly to leave the critical speed range andstabilize the vehicle-trailer combination.
Generalinformation If the trailer power socket is in use but a trailer
has not been hitched, the system can become
active in certain driving situations, such as
when using a bicycle rack with lighting.
Functionalrequirement
The system is functional at speeds beginning
at approx. 40 mph/65 km/h while a trailer is bej ing towed and the trailer power socket is inuse.
Systemlimits
The system cannot intervene or not intervene
in time in the following situations, for instance:'yIf a trailer jackknifes suddenly, for instance
on slippery roads or loose surfaces.'yIf a trailer with a high center of gravity tilts,
before swinging is detected.'yIf DSC Dynamic Stability Control is deactij vated or has malfunctioned.
Activatingtrailertowing
Concept
Activating trailer towing prevents driver assisj
tance systems from malfunctioning, as they can do when driving with a trailer or load carrier
and the trailer socket not in use.
Activatingtrailertowing
Via iDrive:1."My Vehicle"2."Vehicle settings"3.Activate trailer towing.
Mountfortrailerhitch
Generalinformation
The mount for the trailer hitch is located on the
rear of the vehicle.
Information on suitable trailer hitches is found on the underside of the mount, see arrow.
Follow the Maintenance Instructions, refer to
page 325.
Safetyinformation WARNING
During driving operation, high temperaj
tures can occur underneath the vehicle body, for instance caused by the exhaust gas sysjtem. Contact with the hot components cancause burns. There is a risk of injury. Do nottouch hot components. Do not perform work in
the vicinity of hot components until after they
have cooled down.'
