This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.

information
The vehicle contains advanced technologies
for the reduction of fuel consumption and
emission values.
Fuel consumption depends on a number of difj ferent factors.
Carrying out certain measures, such as a modj erate driving style and regular maintenance, can influence fuel consumption and the envijronmental impact.
Remove
unnecessary
cargoAdditional weight increases fuel consumption.
Remove
attached
parts
following
use
Remove auxiliary mirrors, roof-mounted or rear
luggage racks which are no longer required folj lowing use.
Attached parts on the vehicle impair the aeroj dynamics and increase the fuel consumption.Close
the
windows
and
glass
sunroof
Driving with the glass sunroof and windows
open results in increased air resistance and
raises fuel consumption.
Tires General
information
Tires can affect fuel consumption in various ways, for instance tire size may influence fuel
consumption.
Check
the
tire
inflation
pressure
regularly
Check and, if needed, correct the tire inflation
pressure at least twice a month and before
starting on a long trip.
Low tire inflation pressure increases rolling rej sistance and thus raises fuel consumption and
tire wear.
Drive
away
without
delay
Do not wait for the engine to warm-up while the vehicle remains stationary. Start drivingright away, but at moderate engine speeds.
This is the quickest way of warming the cold engine up to operating temperature.
Look
well
ahead
when
driving
Driving smoothly and proactively reduces fuel
consumption.
Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking.

Avoid
high
engine
speeds
Driving at low engine speeds lowers fuel conj
sumption and reduces wear.
If necessary, observe the vehicle's gear shift
indicator, refer to page 125.
Use
coasting
conditions When approaching a red light, take your footoff the accelerator and let the vehicle coast toa halt.
For going downhill take your foot off the accelj erator and let the vehicle roll.
The flow of fuel is interrupted while coasting.
Switch
off
the
engine
during
longer
stops
Switching
off
the
engine
Switch off the engine during longer stops, for instance at traffic lights, railroad crossings or in
traffic congestion.
Auto
Start/Stop
functionThe Auto Start/Stop function of the vehicle aujtomatically switches off the engine during a
stop.
If the engine is switched off and then restarted
rather than leaving the engine running conj stantly, fuel consumption and emissions are
reduced. Savings can begin within a few secj
onds of switching off the engine.
In addition, fuel consumption is also deterj
mined by other factors, such as driving style,
road conditions, maintenance or environmental
factors.Switch

not
currently
needed
Functions such as seat heating and the rear
window defroster require a lot of energy and
increase fuel consumption, especially in city
and stop-and-go traffic.
Switch off these functions if they are not
needed.
The ECO PRO driving mode supports the enj
ergy conserving use of comfort features.
These functions are automatically deactivated partially or completely.
Have
maintenance
carried
out
Have the vehicle maintained regularly to achj ieve optimal vehicle efficiency and service life.BMW recommends that maintenance work be
performed by a BMW dealerss service center.

ECO
PRO
Concept
ECO PRO supports a driving style that saves
on fuel consumption. For this purpose, the enj
gine control and comfort features, for instance
the climate control output, are adjusted.
Steptronic transmission: under certain condij
tions the engine is automatically decoupled
from the transmission in the D selector lever
position. The vehicle continues traveling with the engine idling to reduce fuel consumption.
The D selector lever position remains enj
gaged.
In addition, context-sensitive information, ECO
PRO tips, are displayed to assist with an optij

display switches to a special configuration.
Some of the displays may differ from the disj

range A modified driving style helpsyou extend your driving range.
This may be displayed as the bonus range in the instrument
cluster.
The bonus range is shown in the range display.
Depending on the equipment, the blue bar segments symbolize the gained range in
stages.
If the bonus range appears in gray, the current driving style is inefficient.
The display turns blue as soon as all conditions for driving with optimized fuel efficiency are
met.
The bonus range is automatically reset every

A pointer in the fuel consumption display inj forms about the current driving style:

accelerating.
If the acceleration is inefficient, the area bej tween the average fuel consumption and the current fuel consumption is colored red.

Coasting
Concept
The function helps to conserve fuel.
To do this, under certain conditions the engine is automatically decoupled from the transmisj
sion when selector lever position D is set. The
vehicle continues traveling with the engine idling to reduce fuel consumption. Selector
lever position D remains engaged.
This driving condition is referred to as coastj ing.
As soon as you step on the brake or acceleraj
tor pedal, the engine is automatically coupled
again.
General
information Coasting is a component of the ECO PRO drivj
ing mode.
Coasting is automatically activated when ECO PRO mode is called via the Driving Dynamics
Control.
A proactive driving style helps the driver to use the function often and supports the fuel-conj
serving effect of coasting.

cluded in the table, arrow 2, and the faster the
bonus range increases.
If, on the other hand, the driving style is ineffij cient, a more wavy road and a reduced number

In vehicles with a diesel engine, the filler neck
is designed for refueling at diesel fuel pumps.
Safety
information NOTE
With a driving range of less than
30 miles/50 km the engine may no longer have
sufficient fuel. Engine functions are not enj sured anymore. There is a risk of damage to
property. Refuel promptly.'
