ApproachcontrolwarningDepending on the equipment, the collision
warning system consists of one of the follow#j
ing functions:'yApproach control warning with City light braking function, refer to page 121.'yApproach control warning with braking
function, refer to page 124
Approachcontrolwarning
withCitylightbraking
function
Concept
The system can help prevent accidents. If an
accident cannot be prevented, the system will help reduce the collision speed.
The system sounds a warning before an immi#j
nent collision and actuates brakes independ#j
ently, if needed.
The automatic braking intervention is done with limited force and duration.
A camera in the area of the rearview mirror
controls the system.
The approach control warning is available even if cruise control has been deactivated.
With the vehicle approaching another vehicle
intentionally, the approach control warning and braking are delayed in order to avoid false sys#j
tem reactions.
Generalinformation The system warns at two levels of an imminentdanger of collision at speeds from approx.3 mph/5 km/h. Time of warnings may vary withthe current driving situation.
Appropriate braking kicks in at speeds of up to
35 mph/60 km/h.
Detectionrange
Objects are responded to if they are detected
by the system.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Indicators and warnings do not relieve
the driver from personal responsibility. Due to
system limits, warnings or reactions of the sys#j tem may not be output or they may be output
too late or incorrectly. There is a risk of an ac#j cident. Adjust the driving style to the traffic
conditions. Watch traffic closely and activelyintervene in the respective situations.'

Prewarning
This warning is issued, e.g., when there is the impending danger of a collision or the distanceto the vehicle ahead is too small.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is a prewarning.
Acutewarningwithbrakingfunction
Acute warning is displayed in case of the immi#j nent danger of a collision when the vehicle ap#j
proaches another object at a high differential
speed.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is an acute warning. If necessary, the driver is
assisted by a minor automatic braking inter#j
vention in a possible risk of collision.
Acute warnings can also be triggered without
previous forewarning.
Brakingintervention
The warning prompts the driver himself/herself
to react. During a warning, the maximum brak#j
ing force is used. Prerequisite for the brake
booster is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake pedal. The system can assist with
some braking intervention if there is a risk of a collision. At low speeds vehicles may thus
come to a complete stop.
The braking intervention is executed only if ve#j
hicle stability has not been restricted, e.g., by
deactivating the DSC Dynamic Stability Con#j
trol.
The braking intervention can be interrupted by
stepping on the accelerator pedal or by ac#j
tively moving the steering wheel.
Object detection can be restricted. Observe
the limitations of the detection range and func#j tional restrictions.Systemlimits
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system can react incorrectly or not
at all due to the system limits. There is a risk of
accidents or risk of property damage. Observe the information regarding the system limits
and actively intervene, if needed.'

Pedestrianwarning
Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the

pedestrians during daytime or nighttime.
The function is subdivided into the following
systems:
'yDuring daytime:

Pedestrianwarningwith
Approachcontrol
Concept
The system can help prevent accidents with
pedestrians.
When driving at city speeds, the system will is#j sue a warning if there is imminent danger of a
collision with pedestrians and includes a brak#j
ing function.
The camera in the area of the rearview mirror
controls the system.
Generalinformation
With sufficient brightness, the system warns
about possible collision danger with pedes#j trians starting at approx. 6 mph/10 km/h to ap#j
prox. 35 mph/60 km/h and assists with braking before a collision.
Under those circumstances it reacts to people who are within the detection range of the sys#j
tem.
Detectionrange
The detection area in front of the vehicle is div#jided into two areas:
'yCentral area, arrow 1, directly in front of thevehicle.'yExpanded area, arrow 2, to the right and
left.
A collision is imminent if pedestrians are lo#j
cated within the central area. A warning is is#j
sued about pedestrians who are located within the extended area only if they are moving inthe direction of the central area.

An infrared camera scans the area in front of
the vehicle and issues a warning if it detects
pedestrians and animals on the street. Warm
objects that are similar in shape to human be#j ings or animals are detected by the system. Ifnecessary, the heat image can be displayed on
the Control Display.
Heatimage
The image shows the heat radiated by objects in the field of view of the camera.
Warm objects have a light appearance and cold objects a dark appearance.
The ability to detect an object depends on the
temperature difference between the object
and the background and on the level of heat radiation emitted by the object. Objects that
are similar in temperature to the environment
or that radiate very little heat are difficult to de#j
tect.
For safety reasons, when driving at speeds above approx. 3 mph/5 km/h and in low ambi#j ent light, the image is only displayed when thelow beams are activated.
A still image is displayed at regular intervals for a fraction of a second.
Pedestrianandanimaldetection
Object detection and object warning only func#j
tion in darkness.
Objects whose form is similar to people with
sufficient heat radiation are detected.
In addition, the system also detects animalsabove a certain minimum size, for example,
deer.
Display on the Control Display with heat image
activated:
'yPeople detected by the system: in light yellow.'yAnimals detected by the system: in dark
yellow.
Range of object detection, with good ambient
conditions:
'yPedestrian detection: up to approx.
330 ft/100 m'yDetection of large animals: up to approx.
490 ft/150 m'yDetection of medium animals: up to ap#j prox. 230 ft/70 m
Environmental influences can limit the availa#j
bility of object detection.
If the vehicle systems detect that the vehicle is located in a residential area, the animal detec#j
tion is temporarily switched off.
