Approachcontrolwarning
withCitylightbraking
function
Concept
The system can help prevent accidents. If an
accident cannot be prevented, the system will help reduce the collision speed.
The system sounds a warning before an immij
nent collision and activates brakes independj
ently, if needed.
The automatic braking intervention is done with limited force and duration.
A camera in the area of the interior mirror conj
trols the system.
The approach control warning is available even if cruise control has been deactivated.
With the vehicle approaching another vehicle
intentionally, the approach control warning and braking are delayed in order to avoid false sysj
tem reactions.
Generalinformation The system warns at two levels of an imminentdanger of collision at speeds from approx.3 mph/5 km/h. Time of warnings may vary withthe current driving situation.
Appropriate braking kicks in at speeds of up to
35 mph/60 km/h.
Detectionrange
Objects that the system can detect are taken into account.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess visibility and trafj fic situation. There is a risk of an accident. Adjjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watchtraffic closely and actively intervene where apj
propriate.'

Display
A warning symbol appears in the instrument
cluster and in the Head-up Display if a collision with a detected vehicle is imminent.
SymbolMeasureSymbol lights up red: prewarning.
Brake and increase distance.Symbol flashes red and an acoustic signal sounds: acute warning.
Brake and make an evasive maneuj ver, if necessary.
Prewarning
This warning is issued, for instance when there
is the impending danger of a collision or the distance to the vehicle ahead is too small.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is a prewarning.
Acutewarningwithbrakingfunction
Acute warning is displayed in case of the immij nent danger of a collision when the vehicle apj
proaches another object at a high differential
speed.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is an acute warning. If necessary, the driver is
assisted by a minor automatic braking interj
vention in a possible risk of collision.

Acute warnings can also be triggered without
previous forewarning.
Brakingintervention
The warning prompts the driver to react. Durj ing a warning, the maximum braking force isused. Prerequisite for the brake booster is sufjficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake
pedal. If there is a risk of collision, the system may assist with braking. When the vehicle is
traveling at a low speed, the vehicle may come to a complete stop.
The braking intervention occurs only if vehicle stability has not been restricted, for instance
by deactivating the DSC Dynamic Stability
Control.
The driver may cancel the braking intervention
by stepping on the accelerator pedal or by acj tively moving the steering wheel.
Object detection can be restricted. Follow the
limitations of the detection range and funcj
tional restrictions.

Safetyinformation WARNING
The system can react not at all, too late,
incorrectly, or without justification due to the system limits. There is a risk of accidents or
risk of damage to property. Follow the informaj

The system sounds a warning before an immij
nent collision and activates brakes independj ently, if needed.
The automatic braking intervention may be
executed with maximum braking force and for a brief period only as necessary.
If the vehicle is equipped with Active Cruise
Control with Stop&Go, the approach control
warning is controlled via the cruise control raj
dar sensor in conjunction with a camera.
The approach control warning is available even
if cruise control has been deactivated.
With the vehicle approaching another vehicle
intentionally, the approach control warning and
braking are delayed in order to avoid false sysj

Generalinformation
The system issues a two-phase warning of a
possible risk of collision with vehicles at
speeds above approx. 3 mph/5 km/h. Time of
warnings may vary with the current driving sitj

Warningsensitivity
The more sensitive the warning settings are,
for example the warning time, the more warnj ings are displayed. Therefore, there may alsobe an excess of premature or unjustified warnj
ings and reactions.
Personwarning
Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the
function warns of an imminent collision with pedestrians during daytime or nighttime.
The function is subdivided into the following
systems:
'yDuring daytime:
Pedestrian warning with City light braking
function, refer to page 137'yAt night: Night vision, refer to page 139
PersonwarningwithCity

Concept
The system can help prevent accidents with pedestrians.
When driving at city speeds, the system will isj sue a warning if there is imminent danger of a collision with pedestrians and includes a brakj
ing function.
The camera in the area of the interior mirror
controls the system.
Generalinformation
With sufficient brightness, the system warns
about possible collision danger with pedesj trians starting at approx. 6 mph/10 km/h to apj
prox. 35 mph/60 km/h and assists with braking before a collision.
The system reacts to people who are withinthe detection range of the system.
Detectionrange
The detection area in front of the vehicle is divjided into two areas:
'yCentral area, arrow 1, directly in front of thevehicle.'yExpanded area, arrow 2, to the right and
left of the central area.
A collision is imminent if pedestrians are loj
cated within the central area. A warning is isj
sued about pedestrians who are located within the extended area only if they are moving inthe direction of the central area.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess visibility and trafj fic situation. There is a risk of an accident. Adjjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watchtraffic closely and actively intervene where apj

Warm objects have a light appearance andcold objects a dark appearance.
The ability to detect an object depends on the
temperature difference between the object
and the background and on the level of heat radiation emitted by the object. Objects that
are similar in temperature to the environment
or that radiate very little heat are difficult to dej
tect.
For safety reasons, when driving at speeds
above approx. 3 mph/5 km/h and in low ambij
ent light, the image is only displayed when the low beams are switched on.
A still image is displayed at regular intervals for
a fraction of a second.
Pedestrianandanimaldetection
Object detection and object warning only funcj
tion in darkness.
Objects whose form is similar to people with
sufficient heat radiation are detected.
In addition, the system also detects animalsabove a certain minimum size, for instance
deer.
Display on the Control Display with thermal imj
age activated:
'yPeople detected by the system: in light yellow.'yAnimals detected by the system: in dark
yellow.
Range of object detection, with good ambient
conditions:
'yPedestrian detection: up to approx.
330 ft/100 m'yDetection of large animals: up to approx.
490 ft/150 m'yDetection of medium animals: up to apj prox. 230 ft/70 m
Environmental influences can limit the availaj
bility of object detection.
If the vehicle systems detect that the vehicle is located in a residential area, the animal detecj
tion is temporarily switched off.

sonal responsibility to assess visibility and trafj fic situation. There is a risk of an accident. Adjjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watchtraffic closely and actively intervene where apj
