sists of two parts:
'yCentral area, arrow 1, directly in front of the vehicle.'yExpanded area, arrow 2, to the right and
left of the central area.
With animal warnings, no distinction is made
between the central or expanded area.
The entire area moves along with the vehicle in
the direction of the steering angle and changes
with the vehicle speed. As the vehicle speed increases, the area becomes, for instance lonjger and wider.

Prewarning
Prewarning for persons is displayed when a person is detected in the central area immedij
ately in front of the vehicle as well as on the left
or right side in the extended area.
Prewarning for animals is displayed when an
animal is detected in the front of the vehicle.
The driver must intervene actively by braking
or making an evasive maneuver when there is a
prewarning.
Acutewarning
Acute warning is displayed if a person or an animal is detected in direct proximity in front of the vehicle.

The driver must immediately intervene activelyby braking or making an evasive maneuver
when there is an acute warning.
Systemlimits
Basiclimits The system may not be fully functional in thefollowing situations:'yOn steep hills, in steep depressions or in
tight curves.'yIf the camera is soiled or damaged.'yIn heavy fog, rain or snowfall.'yAt very high external temperatures.
Limitsofpedestrianandanimal
detection
In some situations, it may occur that pedesj
trians are detected as animals or animals as
pedestrians.
Small animals are not detected by the object
detection function, even if they are clearly visij ble in the image.
Limited detection, for instance in the following
circumstances:
'yPeople or animals who are fully or partially covered, especially when their heads are
covered.'yPeople who are not in an upright position,
for instance lying down.'yCyclists on unconventional bicycles (e.g., recumbent bicycles).'yAfter physical damage to the system, forinstance after an accident.
Nodisplayontherearscreen
The image from Night Vision cannot be disj
played on the rear screen.
Lanedeparturewarning
Concept
The lane departure warning alerts when the vehicle on roads with lane markings is about to
leave the lane.
Generalinformation Depending on the country version, the system
issues a warning at speeds between
35 mph/55 km/h and 45 mph/70 km/h.
When switching on the system below this
speed, a message is displayed in the instruj ment cluster.
Warnings are issued by means of a steering
wheel vibration. The time of the warning may
vary depending on the current driving situaj tion.
The system does not provide a warning if the turn signal is set before leaving the lane.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess road and traffic
safety. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic
closely and actively intervene where approprij
ate. Do not jerk the steering wheel in response
to a warning.'

Systemlimits
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system can react not at all, too late,
incorrectly, or without justification due to the system limits. There is a risk of accidents or
risk of damage to property. Follow the informaj

WARNING
Indicators and warnings do not relieve
from personal responsibility. Due to system
limits, warnings or reactions of the system may
not be output or they may be output too late,
incorrectly, or without justification. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust driving style to trafj
fic conditions. Watch traffic closely and acj tively intervene where appropriate.'

Acutewarning
If the turn signal is set while a vehicle is in the critical zone, the steering wheel vibrates brieflyand the light in the exterior mirror housing
flashes brightly.
The warning stops when the turn signal is switched off, or the other vehicle leaves the
critical zone.
Briefflashing
A brief flashing of the light during vehicle unj locking serves as system self-test.

SafetyinformationWARNING
The system does not relieve from perj

that the driver is rested and alert. Adjust drivj ing style to traffic conditions.'

Function
After the safety belt is buckled, the front safety
belts are automatically tightened once after the vehicle drove off.
In critical driving situations, the following indij vidual functions become active as needed:'yThe front safety belts are automatically
pretensioned.'yAutomatic closing of the windows.'yAutomatic closing of the glass sunroof.'yFor vehicles equipped with Comfort Seats:
automatic positioning of the backrest for
the front passenger seat.
After a critical driving situation without an accij
dent, the front safety belts are loosened again.
All other systems can be restored to the dej sired setting.
If the belt tension does not loosen automatij
cally, stop the vehicle and unbuckle the safety belt using the red button in the buckle. Fasten
the safety belt before continuing on your trip.
PostCrash
Concept
In the event of an accident, the system can
bring the vehicle to a halt automatically without
intervention by the driver in certain situations.
This can reduce the risk of a further collision
and the consequences thereof.
Hardervehiclebraking It can be necessary to bring the vehicle in cerj
tain situations to a halt quicker.
To do this, for a short time the braking presj
sure applied when stepping on the brake pedal must be higher than the braking pressure achjieved by the automatic braking function. Thisinterrupts automatic braking.
Interruptingautomaticbraking
It can be necessary to interrupt automatic
braking in certain situations, for example for an evasive maneuver.
Interrupt automatic braking:'yBy pressing the brake pedal.'yBy pressing the accelerator pedal.
Atstandstill After coming to a halt, the brake is releasedautomatically.

DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem
ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during
braking.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing
active safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant When you apply the brakes rapidly, this systemautomatically produces the greatest possible
braking force boost. It reduces the braking disj
tance to a minimum during emergency stop.
This system utilizes all of the benefits provided
by the Antilock Brake System ABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal
for the duration of the emergency stop.
Adaptivebrakeassistant In combination with Active Cruise Control, this
system ensures that the brakes respond even
more rapidly when braking in critical situations.Drive-offassistant
Concept
This system supports driving off on uphill grades. The parking brake is not required.
Drivingoffwiththedrive-offassistant1.Hold the vehicle in place with the foot
brake.2.Release the foot brake and drive off withj
out delay.
After the foot brake is released, the vehicle is held in place for approx. 2 seconds.
Depending on the vehicle load or when a trailer is used, the vehicle may roll back slightly.
AutomaticDifferentialBrake The system controls the driving force by autojmatic braking intervention on individualwheels. The function corresponds to a differj
ential lock: the system detects if a wheel bej gins to spin, because of loose road surface, for
instance and automatically brakes it.
The driving force is diverted to the wheel with
better traction.
As a result, the engine force is transferred
more efficiently to the wheels during acceleraj
tions.
DynamicPerformance
ControlDPC
The Dynamic Performance Control increases
both the agility of the vehicle and the lane staj bility.
The system seamlessly handles the distribuj tion of the drive torque between the two rear wheels.
