Falsewarnings
The system may issue a warning under the folj lowing conditions even though there is no objstacle within the detection range:
'yIn heavy rain.'yWhen sensors are very dirty or coveredwith ice.'yWhen sensors are covered in snow.'yOn rough road surfaces.'yOn uneven surfaces, such as speed
bumps.'yIn large buildings with right angles and
smooth walls, for instance in underground
garages.'yIn automatic vehicle washes.'yDue to heavy exhaust.'yDue to other ultrasound sources, for inj
stance sweeping machines, high pressure steam cleaners or neon lights.
If necessary, switch off automatic PDC activajtion on obstacle detection, for instance in vehij
cle washes, to reduce false alarms.
Malfunction
A Check Control message is displayed.
The range of the sensors is shown as a shaded area on the Control Display.
PDC has failed. Have the system checked by a
dealerss service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.
SurroundView
Concept
Surround View comprises various camera asj sistance systems that help the driver when
parking, maneuvering, and at complex exitsand intersections.'yRearview camera, refer to page 151'yTop View, refer to page 154.'ySide View, refer to page 156.
Rearviewcamera
Concept
The rearview camera provides assistance in parking and maneuvering backwards. The area
behind the vehicle is shown on the Control
Display.

The camera lens is located in the handle of thetailgate. The image quality may be impaired bydirt.
Clean the camera lens if necessary.

The system switches off when a certain drivingdistance or speed is exceeded.

Pathway lines help you to estimate the space
required when parking and maneuvering on level roads.
Pathway lines depend on the current steering angle and are continuously adjusted to the
steering wheel movements.

Turningradiuslines
Turning radius lines can only be superimposed
on the rearview camera image together with pathway lines.
Turning radius lines show the course of the
smallest possible turning radius on a level road.
Only one turning radius line is displayed after
the steering wheel is turned past a certain anj
gle.
Obstaclemarking
Obstacles behind the vehicle are detected, ifthe vehicle is equipped accordingly, by thePDC sensors and the rearview camera.
If the vehicle is equipped accordingly, obstacle
markings can be faded into the image of the rearview camera.
The colored thresholds of the obstacle markj
ings match the markings of the PDC.
Parkingusingpathwayandturning
radiuslines1.Position the vehicle so that the turning raj dius lines lead to within the limits of the
parking space.2.Turn the steering wheel to the point where
the pathway line covers the corresponding
turning radius line.

Systemlimits
Detectionofobjects
Very low obstacles as well as high, protruding objects such as ledges may not be detected by
the system.
If the vehicle is equipped accordingly, certain assistance functions also take into account
data from the PDC.
Follow instructions in the PDC chapter.
The objects displayed on the Control Display
may be closer than they appear. Do not estij
mate the distance from the objects on the disj
play.
TopView
Concept
Top View provides assistance in parking and
maneuvering. The area around the vehicle is
shown on the Control Display.
Generalinformation
The image is captured by two cameras integrated in the exterior mirrors, by the rearj
view camera and a camera on the front of the vehicle.
The range is no more than approx. 6.5 ft/2 m to
the side, front and rear.
Obstacles within this range are thus displayed early on the Control Display.

The lane line depends on the engaged
gear and the current steering angle. The
track line is continuously adjusted for the steering wheel movement.
"Parking aid lines"
Turning circle and pathway lines are displayed.
Systemlimits
A Check Control message is displayed when a camera is not working.
SideView Concept
Side View provides an early look at cross trafficat blind driveways and intersections. Road
users concealed by obstacles to the left and right of the vehicle can only be detected relaj
tively late from the driver's seat. To improve
the viewing, each camera, front and rear on the
vehicle, detects the traffic area on the side.
Which camera is active is shown on the top
edge of the screen.

'ySide View switched on.'yYour vehicle moves no faster than walking speed.'yTo detect approaching objects, sufficient
brightness, e.g., daylight is necessary.
Display
The yellow symbol is displayed if anapproaching vehicle is detected by thecamera.
A gray symbol is displayed if crossing
traffic cannot be detected.
Systemlimits
In the following situations, the warning about crossing traffic may be limited:
'yIn poor lighting or visibility conditions.'yIf the camera is soiled or covered.
Systemlimits
The objects displayed on the Control Display
under certain circumstances are closer than
they appear. Therefore, do not estimate the distance from the objects on the display.
The viewing angle is approx. 180p.

Parking assistant handling is divided into three
steps:'ySwitching on and activating.'yParking space search.'yParking.
Ultrasound sensors measure parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle.
The parking assistant calculates the best posj
sible parking line and during the parking procej
dure takes control of steering, the acceleration and braking, and if needed, changes the gears.Press and hold the park assistance button forthe duration of the parking procedure.
System status and instructions on required acj
tions are displayed on the Control Display.
The parking assistant uses the sensors of PDC
Park Distance Control.

'yIf the driver grasps the steering wheel ortakes over steering.'yPossibly on snow-covered or slippery roadsurfaces.'yWhen there are obstacles that are hard toovercome, such as curbs.'yWhen there are obstacles that suddenly
appear.'yIf the PDC Park Distance Control displays
clearances that are too small.'yIf a maximum number of parking attempts
or the time taken for parking is exceeded.'yWhen switching to another function on the
Control Display.'yWhen the park assistance button is rej
leased.'yIf the tailgate is open.'yIf doors are open.'yWhen setting the parking brake.'yDuring acceleration.'yWhen braking.'yWhen unfastening the driver's safety belt.
A Check Control message is displayed.
Flashingdisplayontheselectorlever The actually engaged transmission positioncan deviate from the selector lever position in
some situations after function interruption. The display in the selector lever flashes.
Observe the display in the instrument cluster,
refer to page 85, in these cases.
Resuming An interrupted parking procedure can be conj
tinued, if needed.
Reactivate the parking assistant, refer to
page 159, and follow the instructions on the
Control Display.
Switchingoff The system can be switched off as follows:

The system can react incorrectly or not
at all due to the system limits. There is a risk of
accidents or risk of property damage. Observe the information regarding the system limits
