An unsecured vehicle can begin to move
and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an acj
cident. Before exiting, secure the vehicle
against rolling.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, observe the following:'ySet the parking brake.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, e.g., with a wheel chock.'

2.With the driver's safety belt fastened,
briefly push the selector lever in the dej sired direction, past a resistance point, if
needed. The selector lever automatically returns to the center position when rejleased.

Concept
The shifting points and shifting times in the Sport program are designed for a sportier drivjing style. The transmission, for instance shifts
up later and the shifting times are shorter.

Manual mode becomes active and the gear ischanged.
The engaged gear is displayed in the instruj ment cluster, for instance M1.
Shifting To shift down: press the selector lever forward.
To shift up: pull the selector lever rearwards.
The transmission continues shifting automatij cally in certain situations, for instance when
speed limits are reached.

The Steptronic Sport transmission does not
automatically upshift in M/S manual mode
once the maximum speed is reached, if one of
the following conditions is met:'yDSC deactivated.'yTRACTION activated.'ySPORT+ activated.
Depending on the BMW M drive configuration, this function is active independently of the
above-specified conditions.
In addition, there is no downshifting for kickj
down.
With the respective transmission version, the
lowest possible gear can be selected by simulj
taneously operating the kickdown and the left
shift paddles. This is not possible by switching briefly via the shift paddles from selector lever
position D to manual mode M/S.
Endingthemanualmode Push the selector lever to the right.
D is displayed in the instrument cluster.
Shiftpaddles
Concept
The shift paddles on the steering wheel allow you to shift gears quickly while keeping both
hands on the steering wheel.

The vehicle only shifts at suitable engine and
road speeds.
Switchingintomanualmode
In selector lever position S, actuating a shift
paddle switches into manual mode permaj
nently.
In selector lever position D, actuating a shift
paddle switches into manual mode temporaj
rily.
Switchingintoautomaticmode
In selector lever position D, after conservative
driving in manual mode without acceleration or
shifting via the shift paddles for a certain
amount of time, the transmission switches
back to automatic mode.
If the selector lever is still in selector lever poj
sition D, it is possible to switch into automatic

Electronically unlock the transmission lock to
maneuver vehicle from a danger area.
Unlocking is possible, if the starter can spin the
engine.
Before unlocking the transmission lock, set the
parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rollj
ing away.
EngagingselectorleverpositionN
1.Press and hold down brake pedal.2.Press the Start/Stop button. The starter
must audibly start.3.Press the button on the selector lever, arj
row 1, and press and hold the selectorlever into selector lever position N, arj row N, until selector lever position N is disjplayed in the instrument cluster.
A Check Control message is displayed.4.Release the selector lever.5.Release brake, as soon as the starter stops.6.Maneuver the vehicle from the danger areaand secure it against moving on its own.

LaunchControl
Concept
Launch Control enables optimum acceleration
on surfaces with good traction under dry surj rounding conditions.
Generalinformation
The use of Launch Control causes premature
component wear since this function represents
a very heavy load for the vehicle.
Do not use Launch Control during the break-in,
refer to page 196, period.
To start with Launch Control do not steer the steering wheel.
Functionalrequirements
Launch Control is available when the engine is
warmed up, that is, after uninterrupted driving
of at least 6 miles/10 km.

After Launch Control was used, the transmisj
sion must cool down for approx. 5 minutes, bej fore Launch Control can be used again.
Launch Control adjusts to the surroundingconditions, when used again.
AfterusingLaunchControl
To increase vehicle stability, activate DSC Dyj
namic Stability Control again.
Systemlimits
An experienced driver may be able to achieve better acceleration values in DSC OFF mode.

displays support a driving style that saves onfuel consumption with more prominent reprej
sentation of the efficiency display and various ECO PRO tips.

tachometer.'yArrow 1: successive yellow illuminated

not wait any further to shift.
When the maximum possible speed is
reached, the entire display flashes. When the
maximum speed is exceeded, the supply of
fuel is interrupted in order to protect the enj
gine.
CheckControl Concept
The Check Control system monitors functions
in the vehicle and notifies you of malfunctions
in the monitored systems.
Generalinformation A Check Control message is displayed as a
combination of indicator or warning lights and SMS text messages in the instrument cluster
and in the Head-up Display.
In addition, an acoustic signal may sound and
an SMS text message may appear on the Conj trol Display.
Indicator/warninglights
Generalinformation
The indicator and warning lights in the instruj ment cluster can light up in a variety of combij
nations and colors.
Several of the lights are checked for proper
functioning and light up temporarily when the engine is started or the ignition is switched on.
Redlights
Safetybeltreminder Safety belt on the driver's side is not
buckled. For some country-specific models: passenger belt is not worn or
objects are detected on the front passenger seat.
Indicator lamp flashes or is illuminated: safety
belt on the driver or passenger side is not
buckled. The safety belt reminder can also be
activated if objects are placed on the front pasj senger seat.
Make sure that the safety belts are positioned correctly.
Airbagsystem Airbag system and belt tensioner arenot working.
Have the vehicle checked immediately
by a dealerss service center or another qualij fied service center or repair shop.
Parkingbrake The parking brake is set.Release the parking brake, refer to
page 74.
