SymbolPossible causeThere is a flat tyre or substantial
loss of tyre pressure. No reset has been done to the sysj tem. The system uses the tyre inflajtion pressures saved during the last
reset for the warning.
Measure
Reduce your speed and carefully stop the vej
hicle. Avoid violent or sudden braking and steering manoeuvres.
Whattodointheeventofaflattyre
1.Identify the damaged tyre.
To do this, check the air pressure in all four
tyres, for example using the tyre pressure indicator of a tyre repair kit.
If all four tyres are inflated to the correct
tyre inflation pressures, the Tyre Pressure
Monitor might not have been reset. Run rej
set.
If it is not possible to identify tyre damage, contact a Service Partner of the manufacj
turer or another qualified Service Partner or
a specialist workshop.2.Repair the flat tyre, for example using a
tyre repair kit or by changing the wheel.
The use of sealant, for example a tyre repair kit,
can damage the TPM wheel electronics. In this case, have the electronics replaced at the next
opportunity.
Systemlimits
The system is not working correctly if no reset
has been run, for example, a flat tyre is reporj ted in spite of the correct tyre pressure.
The tyre inflation pressure depends on thetemperature of the tyre. By increasing tyre
temperature, for example, when driving or with solar radiation, the tyre inflation pressure inj
creases. Tyre inflation pressure decreases if
the tyre temperature drops. Through this bej
haviour, a warning may be triggered if there are
major temperature drops, due to the given
warning limits.
No warning can be given by the system of exj
treme, sudden tyre failure caused by external factors.
Malfunction The yellow warning lamp flashes and isthen illuminated continuously. A CheckControl message is shown. No flat
tyres or loss of tyre pressure can be detected.
Examples and recommendations for the
following situations:'yWheel without TPM electronics is fitted: have the vehicle checked by a ServicePartner of the manufacturer or anotherqualified Service Partner or a specialist
workshop if necessary.'yMalfunction: have the system checked by a
Service Partner of the manufacturer or anj
other qualified Service Partner or a specialj
ist workshop.'yTPM has not completed a reset. Run a rej
set of the system again.'yFault due to systems or devices with the
same frequency: the system is automatij cally reactivated upon leaving the field of
interference.
RunflatindicatorRPA
Principle The system identifies a loss of tyre pressure
by comparing the speeds of rotation of the inj
dividual wheels during the journey.
If a tyre loses pressure, its diameter changes.
This in turn alters the rotational speed of the corresponding wheel. The difference will be
detected and reported as a flat tyre.

The system does not measure the tyre inflajtion pressure as such.
Functionalrequirements
The following requirements must be met for
the system, as otherwise reliable signalling of a loss of tyre inflation pressure is not ensured:'yAfter every tyre or wheel change, an initialij
sation was carried out with the correct tyre
inflation pressure.'yAn initialisation was carried out after the
tyre inflation pressure was adjusted to a
new value.
Statusdisplay
The current status of the runflat indicator can
be shown, for example whether the RPA is acj
tive.
Via iDrive:
1."Vehicle information"2."Vehicle status"3. "Flat Tyre Monitor (RPA)"
The status is displayed.
Initialisationrequired
An initialisation must be performed in the
following situations:
'yAfter adjusting the tyre inflation pressure.'yAfter a tyre or wheel change.
Performinginitialisation
On initialisation, the current tyre pressures are
saved as a reference for detection of a flat tyre.
The initialisation is started by confirming the
correct tyre inflation pressures.
When driving with snow chains fitted, do not
initialise the system.
Via iDrive:
1."Vehicle information"2."Vehicle status"3. "Perform reset"4.Start the engine but do not drive off.5.Start the initialisation with "Perform reset".6.Drive off.
Initialising is completed during the journey; this
process can be interrupted at any time.
Initialising resumes automatically when you
continue your journey.
Messages
Safetynote WARNING
A damaged normal tyre with too low or
missing tyre inflation pressure at all impairs
driving properties, for example steering and braking. Tyres with run-flat properties allow a
limited level of stability to be maintained. Danj
ger of accidents. Do not continue driving if the
vehicle is fitted with normal tyres. Comply with
the notes on run-flat tyres and continuing to
drive with these tyres.'

tor might not have been initialised. In this
case initialise the system.3.Repair the flat tyre, for example using a
tyre repair kit or by changing the wheel.
Systemlimits
In the following situations, the system could be
slow to respond or operate incorrectly:
'yA natural, even loss of tyre pressure in all four tyres that occurs over time is not dej
tected. Consequently, check the tyre inflaj
tion pressure at regular intervals.'yNo warning can be given in the event of
sudden tyre failure caused by external facj tors.'yIf the system has not been initialised.'yJourney on snow-covered or slippery surj
faces.'yDynamic driving style: causing the drive gears to spin, high lateral acceleration.'yDriving with snow chains.
IntelligentSafety
Principle
Intelligent Safety permits central operation of driver assistance systems. Depending on
equipment, Intelligent Safety consists of one
or more systems which can help to avoid the
risk of a collision.
'yFront-end collision with city braking funcj tion, see page 124.'yPerson warning, see page 127.'yLane Departure Warning, see page 134.'yLane change warning, see page 136.

Principle The system can help avoid accidents. If an acjcident cannot be avoided, the system helps to
reduce the collision speed.
The system warns of the possible risk of collij
sion and brakes automatically, as necessary.
The automatic braking intervention is done
with limited force and duration.
The system is controlled by a camera in the
area of the rear-view mirror.
The front-end collision warning is also availj
able if the Cruise Control is disabled.
When deliberately approaching a vehicle, the
approach control warning and braking interj
vention are activated later to avoid unjustified
system responses.
General
The system warns from approximately 5 km/h,
approximately 3 mph in two stages of any risk of collision with vehicles. The timing of thesewarnings may vary depending on the current
driving situation.

warning.
Increase braking and distance.Symbol flashes red and an acoustic signal sounds: acute warning.
System indicates that you must
brake and/or manoeuvre the vehicle yourself.
Advancewarning
An advance warning is shown, for example if a danger of collision is anticipated or there is avery short distance to a vehicle ahead.
The driver must intervene personally if there isan advance warning.
Acutewarningwithbrakingfunction
An acute warning is shown in the event of an
immediate collision if the vehicle approaches
an object with high differential speed.
The driver must intervene personally if there is
an acute warning. If necessary, the driver is asj
sisted by slight automatic brake intervention if there is a risk of collision.
An acute warning can be triggered even withj out a previous advance warning.
BrakeinterventionThe warning requires to take action yourself.Maximum braking force is used during a warnj
ing. In order for braking force support to be
used, it is necessary for the brake to be
pressed sufficiently quickly and powerfully. In
addition, the system may also support with a
small amount of braking if there is the risk of a collision. The vehicle can be braked at low
speed until it comes to a stop.
The brakes are only applied if driving stability
has not been impaired, for example by deactij
vation of Dynamic Stability Control DSC.
Braking can be discontinued either by pressing the accelerator pedal or by actively moving the
steering wheel.
Detection of objects can be restricted. Limitaj tions of the detection range and functional rej
strictions are to be considered.

General
The system warns with sufficient brightnessfrom approximately 10 km/h, approximately6 mph up to approximately 60 km/h, approxijmately 35 mph of any risk of collision with pejdestrians and supports this by briefly applying
the brakes before a collision.
Persons are taken into account if they are locaj ted within the detection range of the system.
Detectionrange
The detection zone in front of the vehicle conj sists of two parts:
'yCentral zone, arrow 1, directly in front ofthe vehicle.'yExtended zone, arrow 2, at right and left ofcentral area.
There is a risk of collision if persons are in the
central zone. A warning is only given of perj
sons in the extended zone if they are moving in
the direction of the central zone.

Thermalimage
The heat radiated by objects in the camera'sfield of view is shown.
Warm objects are shown light and cold objects
dark.
The recognition depends on the temperature
differential in relation to the background and
on the natural heat radiation of the object. Obj
jects with a low temperature difference in relaj
tion to the environment or low heat radiation
can only be detected to a limited degree.
For safety reasons, as of approximately 5 km/h,
approximately 3 mph and low surrounding
brightness, the image is only shown when the
low-beam headlights are switched on.
A still image is intermittently displayed for a fraction of a second.
Personandanimalrecognition
The object detection and object warning sysj tem only operates in the dark.
Warm objects with a shape similar to human
beings and sufficient heat radiation are detecj
ted.
The system also detects animals of a certain
size, such as deer.
Image on the Control Display with thermal imj
age switched on:'yPersons detected by the system: in light
yellow.'yAnimals detected by the system: in dark
yellow.
Detection range of object detection, under good ambient conditions:
'yPerson recognition: up to approximately 100 m, 330 ft'yDetection of larger animals up to approxij
mately 150 m, 490 ft'yDetection of animals of average size: up to approximately 70 m, 230 ft
Environmental influences can restrict the availj
ability of object detection.
If the vehicle systems detect that the vehicle is in a built-up area, animal detection is temporaj
rily switched off.
Safetynote WARNING
The system does not release you from
your personal responsibility to estimate the visibility conditions and the traffic situation.
Danger of accidents. Adapt driving style to the traffic conditions. Observe the traffic situation
and intervene actively if the situation warrants
it.'
